That car is an obvious menace on the road and needs to be repaired immediately. Damn that gas cap!

Edit: See the update below.

How does a car fail inspection these days? They only thing they do anymore is look to see that the 'check engine' light isn't on.

The gas cap issue is a favorite item that they pick on. I know it's nothing to replace the cap but the BS and inconvenience is and helps some folks to justify their job. And yet one will drive along the GSP and see stretches of road and especially exits where street lights are alternately not turned on or even if at all. This is a far greater safety issue.

Nope, they still open your gas cap and attached something to it to see if fumes can escape.

They also now have a camera mounted in the concrete with 2 lights beside it with which they inspect your exhaust system to see if the 'Y' pipe and catalytic convertors have been tampered with.

They failed the BMW behind me because the passenger side headlight was too bright and pointing off to the side.

Aren't the private gas stations that do the tests a lot easier to get through? But need to pay of course. Or was your car not eligible for a private test ?

$75 plus have to drop it off - given the low mileage I figured I'd just breeze through.

Back in the 60's with my first cars,If I had a beater that would likely have trouble passing,I went to see a friend of my father who had shall we say a relationship with the inspection people in Newark.

One day in 1969,there was a line of cars that went on for three blocks near the station. No problem! We went around the back way,I handed my father's friend a Hamilton,he handed the inspection officer a Lincoln, and Voila, out came the scraper.

Those were the good old days!

Interesting. I have a 2011 WRX with aftermarket (Cobb) down pipe and cat-back exhausts to be inspected this month, but it runs fine and has no dashboard lights on. Hopefully there won't be any issues, especially given the elimination of emissions testing..

Spanky, you need to get your cars inspected in Freehold. I ran my old Saab through there a couple weeks ago - they hook the diag cable up to the OBD2 port and that's it. Nothing else.

In Maine and Mass, the last two states I lived in, it's all private. Maine in particular the private inspectors seem to be of two philosophies....those who do everthing to give you a break and pass you, and those (chains and dealers) who seem to delight in using it as an extortion mechanism.

A gas cap is not so much a safety issue as an air pollution issue. In warm weather, gasoline volatizes into the atmosphere and (because gasoline is made up of reactive organic gases) helps create urban smog, which is a threat to public health and welfare. Relax and do the repair.

I actually remember a time when Florida did have safety inspections -- I remember taking my mom's car for one. . But Florida does not have (and so far as I know) never has had emissions inspections. All of the state meets the air quality standards for auto-related air pollutants.

Rahway is still only check engine light and emissions testing. I've gone through with the airbag light on and passed.

Pretty sure you can read and reset your error codes with a $10 ODBII bluetooth connector and cheap software for your phone.

I had a tune on my Raptor and it shut off some of the sensors. Had to undo the tune to get the sensors back on and then let them ready themselves before taking it back.

Oh and Guido!

Yep, 4th Gen and 1st year they dropped the Corvette engine (LS1) in it.

Yeah... 320 hp, 345 lb/ft. 0-60 in 5.5, 13.9 in the quarter.

That's about what my Audi does with an engine a third the size. :)

Actually those are the numbers for the Z28 - the SS had more than that. But that's great you have a 1998 Audi that could do that.
Next home game I wanna see him sporting his wide-lapel satin shirt and gold chains.
Isn't that 70's Disco Era?

Actually, it's a 2015 A3. No '98 Audi could come close to those numbers.

Exactly. The current Camaro SS is putting out 455 HP - I think the ZL1 version is putting out in excess of 700. Totally sick numbers.

640 hp / 640 tq.

I like the 6th Gen a lot. If I was in the market for a car toy I'd get a 6th Gen with the 3.6 V6. Its performance numbers are terrific, it gets good gas mileage and the 6 through the dual-mode exhaust sounds awesome. Very Jag-like.

That's a generation removed - the 3rd Gen had the IROC. Besides, SS > IROC when it comes to it.
Just teasin ya there Tony.

Invaluable time spent with my younger son Corey, who wanted to get up early and go along.
Hope he's just as excited about the second trip there. Instead of maybe a park, ball field, or the library. I hear Totowa is beautiful this Time of year.

Well the second trip will involve dropping him and Tyler off at school sometime during the middle of the month, a stop by DMV for a few minutes on the way to work and then continue on to work.

Boy you sure are working hard to prove your point, aren't you?

one advantage is that if there is a minor problem the station would go ahead and fix it before you return....

I have nightmares about the Rahway Station from years ago. Many 2 and 3 hour wait times back in the day.

Long wait times for an inspection are only during the end of the month now. Although, it looks like the office always has a line extending outside. I think the DMV and Postal offices compete for least efficient services.

8-10 minutes this morning, pulled right into Lane 1, guy rolled his eyes when he saw that it had been failed for the gas cap, next guy plugged it in, put it back, put a new sticker on, and on my way I went.
