COLLEGE PARK, Md. – The University of Maryland and Johns Hopkins University men’s lacrosse teams have collaborated to announce the unveiling of “The Rivalry Trophy.”

Serving as a nod to one of the state of Maryland’s most iconic images, the Maryland blue crab, the trophy was made using reclaimed wood from Baltimore, Md., and crafted by Sandtown Millworks. It weighs 25 pounds and measures 32 inches wide and 22 inches tall.

“Our coaching staff and players consider it a great honor and privilege to compete in a rivalry that is much greater than ourselves,” said Maryland head coach John Tillman. “We are thrilled to add even more meaning to the Maryland-Johns Hopkins rivalry with the addition of the trophy.”

Im not sure why they went with this trophy. They should have gone with a ceremonial bushel, to be cleaned and filled with crabs for the winning team every summer. Nothing more Maryland than a crab feast. Engrave each years winner on the side.

That thing is awful. Looks like something you would make in middle school shop class.

I think it's neat. It's something unique that ties in to a B1G-tradition of trophy games. I like that it is unique like this and not something bland like the Heros Trophy between Iowa and Nebraska or the Land Grant Trophy between Penn State and Michigan State in football. It has character like the Illibuck, Paul Bunyan's ax, etc.

I like the bucket idea with the winners added each year. I think that would have been really nice in the future as it grew. But I think this is nice too. I like that it's reclaimed wood from Baltimore and not another crystal or metal trophy.

Probably the only state that would have the trophy for lacrosse rather than football or basketball.

FYI Maryland and Rutgers are in discussions for a trophy. Hopefully it gets done.

I only hope it has more bravado than the Lax trophy. It looks like a 7th grade shop class project. Actually, I just insulted a bunch of 7th graders.
