Posting this here for visability as this affects a lot of us who use air travel.

The implementation of Real ID in NJ has the potential to be a gargantuan cluster****, and it really isn't being reported on that much.

To give some context to this thread, I was due for a license renewal at the end of September. I called my local MVC office in August to inquire about Real ID and how to get one. The person assisting me told me not to worry, and that ALL new IDs being issued in the state would be Real IDs starting August 1st. So I went to the MVC and went about my business getting it renewed all while being told my new ID would be compliant ( I provided the additional points of ID it requires).

Fast forward to yesterday and I came across an NJ101.5 article that someone posted on social media talking about Real ID. I opened it as my new ID looked different from the one in the article and sure enough, I wasn't issued a REAL ID like I was told I would. In fact, NJ didn't start issuing REAL IDs until September and is ONLY issuing them at 2 locations in the state (Trenton and Eatontown). Not only that, but it's by appointment only and apparently there is a multiple month long waiting list!

So, had anyone else gone through the process of getting one? I showed people in my office (a large chunk who travel) and no one knew anything about these new regs. Seems like a huge pain and there is a real likelihood that hundreds of thousands are going to be turned away at Newark come October. Government bureaucracies are a mess in general but I haven't seen something like this yet.

I think there are a few other locations, but it is still a limited number. I know of one person who went thru the process and it took a while to get an appointment.

According to the article none of the locations are in Bergen or Passaic County. Shades of the health care exchange roll-out.

My dl doesn't expire for a few years. Trying to replace it ahead of time with a real ID will be a massive pain. I can't even do it yet even if I wanted to! So instead I will just get the REAL ID version when it comes time to renew.

Until then, if you don't need a passport book (international travel), you can just get a Passport Card (domestic travel only). It cost less Just $65 for the 1st time you get it and $30 to renew every 10 years. Compared to $145 and $110 to renew for a passport book.

More Information here: https://travel.state.gov/content/travel/en/passports/need-passport/card.html

You have until October 2020 to get one and if you don't you can still travel with a passport. This has been all over. The law has actually been delayed for years.

If you have a valid passport, you are fine. My passport is valid for 5 years so I plan to wait this mess out and get a real ID license when my current license expires in 2022;

My passport is in good order so not an issue for me, just wanted to put this out there as I can see this impacting those who travel once or twice a year just for pleasure the worst. You'd be surprised how many people don't have an active passport.

My wife gots her’s last week and I am scheduled to go 12/23 to get mine. I went to the DMV website a few months ago to read up on the Real ID and it asked if I wanted to sign updates. I provided my e-mail address and about a month ago got an e-mail informing me I was chosen as part of a pilot program.

I am one of those people, I only travel a few times a year at best. My driver license was all I needed... until now.

Based on current reports of this real ID, it is much easier to get a passport. Valid for ten years, and you never know when the opportunity requiring one may pop up. I'm never without a passport. Plus Hot, Rich chicks love it when you are passport ready...

NJ has been controlled by the Democrats(Assembly & Senate) for the better part of 70 years, is it really surprising that a simple task like issuing an ID is a ClusterF#@%?

Christie really dropped the ball on this. He had 8 years to get us compliant but refused to do so. Lucky I have a passport and global access so I don't really have to worry about this.

Was scheduled for an appointment this week as part of the pilot program. Had to reschedule and the next available appointment was in March. There are about a dozen locations offering Real ID, but it is still very much in beta. No way they'll get everyone who needs one done by October.

Here in Pa if your DL was first issued in 2003 or later, you can check online if your docs are still on file and if so, order one to be mailed to your house. It's that easy.

In addition to air travel, I believe you will need it to enter some government facilities. The real id license is something you are likely to have in your possession at all times, and certainly isn't as bulky as your passport.

If you are only going to US, Canada, Mexico, The Caribbean and Bermuda. Then you can get the card which is cheaper and fits in your wallet. You can also get BOTH the the book and card.

Mistake number one was not recording your phone call to the DMV employee. NJ is a one party consent state, so you only need your permission to record it.

New Jersey is again way, way behind on this.
Tried to get an Appointment [on line] at the MVD site 3 months ago and was put on a waiting list. Gave them my email address. Never heard back.
Checked back several times still no openings.

A passport is much easier. Which seems wrong, but it is what it is.

Alright Ron Swanson

You'd be surprised what happens when you say you're recording the phone call, even if you're not. The customer service drones at the other end wake the **** up, actually pay attention and get shit done.

Get a passport, TSA precheck and global access. its well worth it.

I looked at the CLEAR stations at Newark Liberty this weekend - the lines looked shorter that the TSA pre-check lines, but see that it costs $179 for 12 months - quite expensive compared to TSA precheck ($85 for 5 years).....

totally forgot about the real id shit... but then again i've been outta there for almost 2 years now... HAHA

Wait, what?
After that, if you're a New Jersey resident, you need to eventually get a "REAL ID" if you plan to fly anywhere in the U.S. on or after Oct. 1, 2020.
Is this just a NJ requirement for flying out of a NJ airport?

Sorry, but this is the first I'm hearing about this.

Beginning October 1, 2020, air travelers using driver's licenses as identification will be required to use Real ID compliant driver's licenses.

If you don't have a Real ID driver's license, you can still use other acceptable forms of identification, such as a passport or DHS trusted traveler cards (Global Entry, NEXUS, SENTRI, FAST).

If you have another acceptable form of ID, you may want to hold off on getting a Real ID driver's license until after the initial crush.

Well that sucks balls - another useless move for "our" security. Oh, and you need something like that to travel but not to vote. Makes sense.

Glad I and my family all have passports.
