Other schools (especially those of 40k+ students) don't have students commit suicide during a school year (which is what happened with Ashley Pauls)? You really think that issue of college suicides is somehow a Penn State related problem that doesn't happen elsewhere? Unfortunately, (as per
https://caps.umich.edu/article/facts-and-statistics-0)...
National Statistics:
- Suicide is the #2 leading cause of death for college students
- Approximately 1,100 suicides on college campuses per year
- 25% know of someone who has died as a result of suicide
- 40% know of someone who has attempted
- 0.6% of those 18 years and older attempted suicide. 7.5% of those 18-25 seriously considered suicide (American Foundation of Suicide Prevention, 2013)
- 4.0% of the adult U.S. population reported having suicidal thoughts in the past year. 8.8% of those 18-25 year old seriously considered suicide, 2.9% of those 18-25 year old made a plan, and 1.8% of 18-25 year olds attempted. (National Survey on Drug Use and Health, 2016)
And how is the Osagie incident is tied into Penn State at all? Osaze Osagie who was a 29 year old State College resident with mental health issues that was shot by the State College police when he came at them with a knife while they were performing a wellness check. It certainly has nothing at all to do with Penn State, and instead was a horrible incident that deals with the police's handling of those with mental health issues (it's pretty tough to point the finger at someone that shoots a man that's charging at him with a knife, but likely goes back to the response/training of dealing with an incident like this).
If a New Brunswick police officer has an issue with a 29 year old New Brunswick resident, is that something that involves Rutgers University?
The Piazza death was obviously horrible and a result of the drinking culture that exists at Universities/Fraternities nationwide, and especially at Penn State.
Justine Gross was a tragedy that we may never know the answer on (outside of the police investigation that determined she jumped). Really odd story, but again, short of new evidence coming out, not sure what the PSU Administration can do to find an answer.
