If Coughlin is fired or retires who is on the short list or who would you want? IMO this is one of the best jobs in sports. Made better by it being led by outstanding and loyal owners. On top of that it is not often that jobs come open with a very good QB (I know some people don't like him but he is a top 10ish QB) and a star WR. This team with some lineup tinkering and some better luck with injuries will contend next season. That being said I am concerned about who they will get. CBS sports is saying McAdoo is a candidate which I am on the fence about. I don't really like Cohwerd or Gruden. I would like Harbaugh. As much as I really don't like him there is no doubting his coaching ability at this point. Will be interesting to see where this goes.

Well, I hope TC gets one more to go out on a better note and on his terms.

If Colin Cowherd is hired, I'll never watch again!!! I hate that guy...irritating!!

Harbaugh is not a good fit with this organization. Plus, IF he leaves, will be for Indianapolis. He has a great relationship with the owner.

Cowher or Gruden would be interesting, but have been out of football awhile.

Don't know if McAdoo is ready.

Good topic to discuss though.

Josh McDaniels will be the primary target. McAdoo will also be on the short list along with Steve Spagnuolo. Schiano would have applied, but he just committed to Urban for 2 years, so he's out (this is for those that think he would be a fit).

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Colin_Cowherd Pretty sure your talking about the wrong guy, lol.

TC needs to go, need younger coach.

I would like to see Coughlin stay, most of what's happened is not
his fault. feel McAdoo is not ready and probably part of the problem
with the clock management. If Coughlin goes there will be a complete
overhaul which I don't want yet. Now, Jerry Reece has to go He put together
this mess and I,m tired of Reece's pieces. He took over for Ernie A.
with pro bowlers and stars all over the place. And he has the Giants going
down hill since. People like to say he won a Super bowl, but he didn,t put
that team together. He made a lot of bad picks, not mentioning the DC
coordinator Perry Fewell.

The former Steelers coach,Cowher, fits the mold that Giants want ,ie,strong running game to complement passing along with fierce pass rush.

1. Brian Kelly
2. Bill O'Brien
3. Urban Meyer

Respectfully disagree with these. I don't think 1 and 3 are pro coaching material. (Another Chip, Spurrier or Schiano??). I would be interested in Cowher, but don't think it will happen.

My dark horse pick (just a blind dart) is Mike Singletary. Granted, I watched the "A Football Life" program on the NFL network and he's meticulously preparing for another shot. That would be interesting to me if TC is let go or retires.

Interesting - who could be shopping ? it potentially might be a long list
Dolphins !
Titans !
Browns !
49ers
Colts
Giants
Saints ?
Lions
Ravens?
Eagles?

Of those 10 - guess that at least 5 happen (3- !'s + 2) - plus maybe one (?) or more happens because the coach walks (looking at SP in NO)

Add in a possibility that 2 of the teams who might move might just decide to make a clean break - Rams & Chargers ( think Raiders are appearing happy with their HC)

There are many NFL guys who could step up .... but things may get weird

It also seems there would be good odds that there would be a surprise or two from the college ranks - just when it looked like the college coaching carousel had stopped ... it might pump out a couple of more notes - there could be a few late surprise moves similar to GS's departure to Tampa

Back to the original Giants / Coughlin question - just have a hunch that either the Giants already know who they want - or Coughlin gets one more turn.

Yeah. I would get rid of Reese. He's had some good picks and free agents, but not enough to warrant keeping him.

Sean Payton should be the #1 candidate when the Saints let him go.

I thought it was John Harbaugh that was being discussed as a potential hire if Baltimore makes a change.

I would take Cowher in a second.

Pass on Brian Kelly. He'd be like another Rex Ryan, and the Giants don't do drama.

Edit to add: I think Reese has to go, period. I'm on the fence about whether Coughlin should, too. Too many blown games to just pin it on talent.

You're right about the "other" Harbaugh. Lol. Didn't think of him. Will he be fired though? Terrible season, but that happens sometimes.

I think McAdoo stays for the duration of Eli's new 4 year contract extension. I think he has been the head coach in waiting since his hire.

I agree that Reese should go. If coughlin goes then Reese has to go too. If one stays it should be Coughlin. Reese made some TERRIBLE moves this off season. I was talking about Jim Harbaugh originally. Problem with these NFL coaches under contract is if they are not fired you have to give up picks for them and I would never do that.

The roster is thin with talent and I don't see any other coach doing more with less. Other than the Eagles game the Giants have remarkably been in every single game. Unfortunately the opposition seems to always have the ball with 2 minutes left and the defense is unable to make a stop. I want to keep Coughlin. Cowher is the only coach I would entertain hiring and I honestly don't see him giving up his current job.

I would extend Coughlin 3 years or until Manning is done, fire Reese and find a GM who will stress a strong defensive line. With two stud bookends you get the blitz without having to blitz and can get away with a less talented secondary. This was the philosophy for winning the past 2 super bowls. I remember all those years of taking defensive ends with the first two picks and wondering why and how they'll fit but in hindsight it was genius.

The line for this job would be a long one. Sean Payton, John Harbaugh, Ben McAdoo would lead the list. John Fox would have been on it too if the Bears didn't scoff him up. However, I agree Reese needs to go and a new GM should want to restore NY Giant Defense because it's been gone for way too long now.

Cowher and Gruden are done coaching and I wouldnt want either anyway...been out of the game way too long.

The one in Michigan is the other. The one in Baltimore is a Super Bowl champion. And no, he isn't getting fired.

Some of those lists above are awful.

I could see the following list , in my opinion.
1. Sean Payton
2. John Harbaugh (Cali-everything on NE radio says that are parting ways)
3. Cowhler - been out of football a while though
4. Gruden - but does his attitude fly with Giant Ownership, not so sure

Agree with those above that if only one is to be fired , Reese should go. He won with Ernie's guys.

To McAdoo, I can't see a new coach keeping existing staff.

Jason Garrett would probably be on the short list if he was fired by Jerry Jones.

Seriously doubt it. Regardless, no way IMO that Garrett is fired. Their excuse for this season is Romo's injury and Garrett is just the "yes man" Jerry Jones needs to run HIS team.

If they part ways, it will the few times that the two parties really did so. Sometimes you need a change of scenary but he isn't leaving unless he wants to. He is adored in Baltimore by all. Even so, I won't believe it until I see. This year was an anomaly. Horrible calls that lost games and more injuries than any team in recent memory.

As for the OP question, I have no idea who I would want to replace Coughlin.
-The usual suspects who are untouchable: Cowher, Gruden. Although I wouldn't mind seeing Bill Cowher as the next Giants coach, but will never happen.
-Sean Payton would be nice but his defenses usually stink and would cost the Giants a draft pick. They need all the draft picks they can get.
-Out of the Giants coordinators, Spags shouldn't be considered because he already failed as a HC with the Rams and his current defense is like: EEEWWWW. McAdoo's unit is better but something about him seems off.
Only college coach I would look at is Stanford's David Shaw. But that's not happening either.

I may have missed a couple candidates but like I said, I have no idea.

First off, yes to the posters who believe Reese has to go. Heard this morning that in the last eight seasons, we've only drafted two pro bowlers. No more excuses from the conservative Marra and Tisch families after missing the post season for four straight seasons.

I think the NY Giants HC opening is one of the most coveted opportunities in American sports. With that said, here is my list:

Brian Kelly
Bill Cowher
Sean Payton
Jim Harbaugh
David Shaw
Jon Harbaugh
Urban Meyer

#1 Reese has to go.
#2 Payton with a strong DC would be my top choice
#3 No, no, no to Cowher or Gruden. Both out of the game for way too long.

I have heard Sean Payton's name mentioned too. It's an interesting spot the Giants are in. IF they can land someone they want, then Coughlin should be relieved. BUT, if the Giants don't have a desired candidate they can hire, then I'd consider another year with Coughlin and the Giants can try again next year. Coughlin wants to stay as long as possible so he'd take year to year contracts at this point.

But despite his wishes, his time is coming to an end sooner or later. Reese should go, as well as the coach, if a change is made.

Reese wasted a valuable draft pick on Ryan Nassib to wear a hat a hold a clipboard behind Eli Manning who never leaves the field. Nuff said. Time to go.

The Giants are terrible. No discipline. For a coach that prides himself on it, he has to go.

I agree with a couple of posters on Meyer, Payton, David Shaw. Cowher and Gruden been gone too long. Harbaugh's are not leaving their jobs. I would also include Saban, D'Antonio (too old?), C Pederson, Cutliffe. All excellent coaches with the players they get.

Cowher has been out of the game way too long. I'd be irate if we took him. McDaniels might actually be the hire if Belichick vouches for him to the Mara's.
