I just found out today that fandiego, also known as Felonious Monk, passed away on Feb 12. He was a Highland Park High and RU grad. He was 70 and battling cancer. He and I became really good friends off the board, although I never met him in person. He had a wicked sense of humor and loved RU sports. Sad day.

RIP Joel. Unfortunately due to politics he and I had a falling out before he went to California. For quite a while after his encounter with the federal government he was a member of our tailgate.

Sorry to hear this. Remember him well - even if I was a little jealous of his sunny and 70 weather reports in the winter storm threads back in the day. Wasn’t he from Plainfield originally or am I thinking of another poster?

RIP! Very sad to hear. Didn't know him well, but thought he was a good man with some demons. My sister was actually friends with his niece and nephew who grew up in EB. I'm not 100% positive, but I think that nephew passed away a while back. That was tough on him.

Highland Park. But he might have lived in Plainfield for a while. Don't know.

Very sad to hear. I saw him frequently for a period a number of years ago when his great niece and my daughter played basketball together. The passing of his nephew was hard on the family. May he rest in peace.

Been a while since I heard from Joel. We'd exchange emails about every few months or so. He spent several years caring for his old / former partner, Robin, while she battled cancer. Between her and his nephew, that was a lot of loss to deal with.

He was a quirky dude, for sure. But he was also a really good guy whose company was always enjoyable.

Damn shame. Met Joel/fandiego several times, including bowl games and at the UNC game in 2006. I was there with 8 family members (sister and her family lived in Charlotte for many years, so my wife, son and I met them there for the game) and was walking into the stadium when I hear, "hey RU numbers!!" and it was fandiego. My family was like, what? Took a little explaining, lol. He also knew my wife's older sister, who is about his age, as they all grew up in HP. Also sat with his group at the Insight Bowl. Funny, quirky, nice guy.

Rest in peace fellow HPHS alum. I knew him then though we were two classes apart. Good guy.

RIP Fandiego: may all that knew and cared for you be comforted remembering the good times had and friendship shared.

Joel would have turned 71 as of March 12th. Just ran across an old thread of his when he turned 66.

When Joel was, um... in the custodial service of the federal government, he spent most of his time at FC Dix. He and I chatted a lot in those days, as I guess I was one of his primary contacts. While he was there he met George Jung, who was also enjoying some time as a guest of the federal government. Joel used to love talking about what an interesting and funny guy George was, and he was able to do it in a way that really cast a notorious drug trafficker in an entirely different light.

FWIW, he always said Dix wasn't so bad. If you're in a position of having to spend some time at a Club Fed, apparently Dix is a pretty good choice.

Yup, me too. I used to cut and paste as many articles on RU Football and Hoops as I could to send to him. All I know is the monitors back then were always up on the latest RU developments.

Joel struggled with Tourette's Syndrome. On the internet, he didn't have to deal with that. As I said, I never met him in person, and when I saw his picture in a memorial tribute, I was kind of surprised that he didn't look at all as I pictured him. We emailed almost every day this last year. Wish I could have told him how different his appearance and what I imagined it to be were.

Is there an obituary posted?

The one that Spanky posted is the one I saw. I was in contact with him up to the day of his surgery for cancer, and he said he'd be in touch as soon as he could, but several emails after that weren't answered, so I assume he never recovered from the surgery.
