I'm graduating in the next few months with my PhD in Biochemistry and Quantitative Biology. I'm in the process of looking for opportunities in and around NJ. Is anyone on this board familiar with jobs at the PhD level in the area? I've been doing a lot of searching, but it seems that many HR filters are difficult to pass through without connections. I have several already at Merck, Novartis, and BMS, but I figured I'd take a look here and see how many ScarletNationers are in the field.

Specifically, my thesis is on computationally and rationally designed peptide inhibitors for Influenza. I've gotten several patents for this and other research I've done in the past and my expertise includes NMR, various biochemical assays (circular dichroism, ITC, chromatography, etc.), molecular dynamics, computational biology, and the like.

Thanks for everyone's help in advance!

College professor, but of course the cycle is mostly over by now. And you'd have to do a national search.

If you can't get a job in a pharma company, law firms would likely consider you to be a technical specialist and/or patent agent. If you are interested in discussing patent law, hit me up with a message.

Two Questions:

Do you want to work on flu?
And would you leave NJ?

Do you have any interest in finance?

Wall Street, hedge funds, P/E firms and white shoe consultancies (McKinsey, Bain, BCG) basically trip over people like you--assuming your Stats game is tight.

You could get a finance job in less than a week. But with that will obviously be the end of your research agenda.

I'm not positive, but wouldn't you realistically need to do a post-doc?
Most positions prefer post-doc experience however there are some that don't, which I'm more interested in as I have very little interest in an academic career.

Email me directly @ Paul dot Herzich @ Seqirus dot com.
I'm open to it and would consider leaving if the opportunity is right. Thanks, sent an email!

Only just starting now?
Only just starting now for what? Applications? I was told ~6 months is an appropriate time for my field and started applying in October. Nothing has panned out yet, but I haven't applied to many positions. My fellowship ends in mid-August so I can stay until then without having to worry about funding.

I would consider it. I've actually have a bit of experience with investing/finance as I started my own cryptocurrency in 2014 which has been pretty successful (not Bitcoin successful though) and had an offer to work at a top tier cryptocurrency company which may still be on the table. If you know of anything specific that you think I may be particularly well suited for, I'd love to hear it! Here's a terribly written article about a party we threw on Wall St. for our cryptocurrency: http://cointelegraph.com/news/vericoinnyc-bitcoin-center-interview-with-doug-pike-patrick-nosker

In other words, are you ok making lots of money?

Been in Chem Eng'g Process Development (development and scale-up of syntheses of small molecule active pharmaceutical ingredients) at Merck for 26 years. Don't know many folks in the biological sciences, like biochemistry/biology, but I know in the Discovery Chemistry area they mostly go after post-docs, not freshly minted PhD's. Have your Merck contacts told you whether they'll hire new PhD's in your areas of interest? Do those areas hire many Rutgers folks? It's interesting that some areas, like mine, hire plenty from RU, but other areas not so much.

I would think your area of research would be attractive here, since we've been doing a lot of internal R&D and external work (licensing/acquisitions) in the antiviral and antibiotic fields, although I don't recall us doing work specifically in influenza (more like HCV, HIV, etc., in the antiviral field). We do, however, have vaccine products in the influenza area (PedvaxHIB) and presumably active vaccine RD on new vaccines in the area (not sure).

Not sure if I can provide that much help in your area, but I'd be willing to forward your resume to someone I know in the area (assuming it's very good). You could message me...

I am a PharmD and have been in pharma for 15 years. I have PhDs in my group that report to me. I did a 2-year clinical research industry fellowship after graduating RU Pharmacy as a way to meaningfully enter pharma. If you are not looking to do a post-doc, then I might suggest looking for a PhD fellowship, though I don't know if they are in your area. Unless you royally screw up, you track into a full time job. I hate to say a PhD alone may not cut it. Good luck.

We have the Ebola one...I'm hoping for a Zika one as well.

My son, Matt, is strongly weighing your excellent advice! No decisions yet however.

But THANKS again!
