OT: Preseason Poll Rankings M & W Soccer

Last year's goalkeeper is spending the year on the Women's U-20? National Team correct? I assume they'd be ranked higher if she were there.

Exactly! #10 without our stud keeper. What a program we've built there quickly!!!

I think 10 is generous. Our backline was by far our best component last year, and we lost two absolute studs. Additionally we're very young - we've got 12 freshmen and just 16 non-freshmen on the roster. Some of the freshmen are really good but a top 10 preseason ranking will be tough to live up to.

NCSAA Ranks:
RU Men's Soccer at 25
RU Women's Soccer at 10

Saw on twitter, no link unfortunately

Here's the link to the men's poll. The women's poll is available on the same site.

B1G Men's Soccer Rankings:

#4 - Maryland
#15 - Indiana
#18 - Ohio State
#25 - Rutgers

Meanwhile, the ACC has 5 of the top 10 and 7 of the top 25. Big Ten men's soccer has to get better.

Since 2000, 14 B1G teams have advanced to the Final Four (Maryland 7x, Indiana 5x, Michigan 1x, and Ohio State 1x) with 5 teams winning the national championship (Indiana 3x and Maryland 2x). The league can't just be the Maryland and Indiana show.

Michigan and Penn State have the cash to have competitive teams and should step it up. They should work toward getting ranked consistently and advancing in the tournament. Five Big Ten schools don't even bother to sponsor the sport, one of America's fastest growing. That's a real shame. A competitive league is good for all member schools.

Tough schedule ahead for the men with a more difficult out of conference schedule also.
Along with the seniors that have graduated, RU also lost three year starter Erik Sa for the year to injury. The women will be a to 10 program for years to come with Mike O'Neal in charge.

The women's defense will be worse. The offense will be much better. Overall though, we'll definitely be a top 10-15 type program, and only getting better each year!

Just to respond to this, PSU's men's soccer program, although it struggled last season, has been competitive on a consistent basis. Five B1G titles, 3 B1G Tournament titles, B1G PoY in 2013 and 2014, 32 NCAA Tournament appearances since 1970, reached Round of 16 in 2010 and 2013, multiple national titles pre-NCAA.

The men's program has not been as successful as the women's, but to insinuate that PSU isn't investing in its men's program, or that it is some sort of bottom-feeder, would be inaccurate.

Sad to hear that the goalie has chosen to abandon her school teammates for an entire season.

Seriously? Try being positive for once! It's just a redshirt year in a sense, which many athletes do! She's not leaving to transfer or work at Burger King, she's got an incredible opportunity to travel and play for the national team (U-20). You WANT these ladies to play at the highest level possible. It helps recruiting tremendously!

Ah, Casey Murphy (the #1 girl I'd like to meet in the world-a former neighbor in Bridgewater- assuming that's who we are talking about) GAVE UP appearing and travelling with the Under 20 team last fall to focus on playing for RU-and was the STAR in the upset victory over #1 UVA. By the way that news helped divert a bit of attention away from the "academic scandal" and robbery! She was the headline article in a Courier-News front page story this past fall.

Also know (I think) that Casey is/was the #2 ranked goalie for that team/age. She gave up travelling with the 20 and under before (last fall) so if she ever wants to play in the Olympics she really needs to be a part of the 20 and under team. This was likely her last chance.

Does someone have a link to the Under 20 thing? I have't heard that. If so maybe not such a bad thing if the team is young and she doesn't lose any eligibility. Shoot did Carli Lloyd or Brianna Scurry ever have that honor?-they've brought RU some great publicity.

By the way I met her brother (who wanted to wrestle for RU-don't think he got a schollie) and the family loves to tailgate in the yellow or blue lot. Once again, jumping unwarranted upon each other...

And she's only young enough to do this once!

From some research I think the "issue" is that the Under 20 World Cup is played in November and December (Papea New Guinea?). The other B1G goalie on the roster of 3 goalies is Rose Chandler of Penn State. I think Casey beat her out for B1G goalie of the year-and was named 1st team B1G goalie and 1st team All-Academic B1G.

Her brother will be wrestling at Bloomsburg, RU wrestling has become very elite and he didn't quite make the cut.

Yes 23, just confirmed again while I was writing before. When I met him while jogging pre this past season I asked him where he was ranked in the state-and to "toot" his own horn- think he said he has finished about 5th in the state.

I believe going into the states he was ranked 3rd in the state at 182. From what I read he came down with the flu during the states and had to withdraw. That obviously cost him.
Seems like a hard worker and good guy so if he does well at Blooomsberg wouldn't be surprised at all to seem hm transfer back home to RU.

While nothing you said is inaccurate, The Women's Soccer team essentially reloaded. I don't think this will be as big an issue if the girl's we have play to their ability. That being said I think they are a year away from really making another push Nationally, but this team should be able to make deep runs both in Conference and Nationally if they play to their abilities.
