I know all about the 6 point requirement, but are you required to have your Social Security card in order to renew? The missus is dead certain she needs it, even though she has a US Passport (4 pts), a valid NJ DL and 2 other documents (1 pt ea) already. Thanks.

You don't need you social security card but need to know the number:

  • 1 primary document proving your identity, such as your:
    • Birth certificate.
    • U.S. passport.
    • Current New Jersey drivers license.
  • 1 secondary document proving your identity, such as your:
    • Military ID.
    • Marriage certificate.
    • College ID and transcript.
  • Your Social Security number (SSN).
  • Proof of your address, such as:
    • Utility bills, issued in the last 90 days.
    • Bank statements, issued in the last 60 days.
    • School transcripts, issued in the last 2 years.

Yep.
BTW, I don't know about where you are, but the lines are ridiculously long in North Bergen for license renewal.
2 1/2 to 3 hours long.

Holy crap, that's awful.

I've done it twice at Freehold since DMV became MVC. Plus one on-site reg renewal. The longest I've ever been in the building was 4 minutes.

I know. I spoke with the guard there and asked him when was a good time to come to this place and he said that it didn't matter...it was always like that...every day. I was there with my wife, who was up for renewal and a new picture. I went back several months later for mine and it was just as bad. The lines were so damn long and moved so damn slow. Of course...it is Hudson County.
I'm blaming it on Christie.

Actually, it is probably the fault of a lot of people who live in NYC and maintain NJ addresses for cheaper car insurance. They probably go to the North Bergen MVC office, since it is the closest to the Lincoln Tunnel. Drive out to Wallington or Lodi, and I bet you'll find much shorter lines.

Just renewed mine u don't need to bring your social security card but u have to fill out the form with your social and hand it in with your money

I renewed my license in Somerville last March and spent 2 hours there in the afternoon..a complete shitshow...yesterday I went in to do title and registeration work and was in and out in 7 minutes and there was no line anywhere so it seems to be hit or miss I guess

15 minutes, Somerville NJ. Took me longer to find a parking space.

In North Bergen the long, long line was only for license renewal...and most of the line stretched outside the building. If you were there for anything else you didn't have to get in that endless, slow-moving line.

North Bergen may be affected by the large number of Latin or other ethnic groups in the area who are obtaining id's as well as driver's licenses. Not to disparage anyone but some may be "undocumented" yet seeking documentation.....both legally and perhaps even illegally. In the id cases the inability to drive or get to another location becomes a factor.

Thanks everyone! She went to Oakland this morning and was in and out in 25 minutes.

Well the Latin and other ethnic groups were certainly there in large numbers. But it was a line only for driver's license renewal.

Kbee, that may be the same line for id's..but I am not totally sure. Just trying to give some reasonable explanation for the situation. Of course the timing is another factor as the last few days of the month and even the beginning of the next come into play. Solution...find another location!
:cool2: ;)

Thanks. But, of course I'm not going back to that location.
While standing in that endless line, I couldn't help thinking that perhaps Sacco had, like the mayor of Fort Lee, gotten on Christie's bad side.

going to the MVC (its not called the DMV anymore) is generally not the nightmare it once was. The one good thing that came from when McGreevy was governor is that this department was cleaned up and modernized.

Car insurance in NY is far cheaper then NJ

Anybody else have the problem of, "Yeah, Hudson County issued birth certificates are not longer valid as one of your forms of ID."

Found that out renewing passport a few years ago.
