After reading the Tumulty's thread, I wanted to post this question to RU alumni: Where did you have your first drink when you turned 21? I had mine at Olde Queens. I waited until midnight on Halloween night to walk in, got carded by Darth Vader, and got a "I turned 21 at Olde Queens" t-shirt. First drink? Jagermeister.

I was at RU when the drinking age was 18 so turning 21 was not a big deal. The pub was a great place to go before or after Patti's. Both my kids turning 21 at RU went to Old Queens.

Obviously you did not read the Tumulty's thread...

first legal drink Hunka Bunka 1991

first illegal Rutgers bar Old Queens morning of Cincinnati game homecoming 1988

first legal Rutgers bar Scarlet Pub 1991

Also drinking age hasnt always been 21. I assume i had my first legal drink at the Trade Winds at age 19. Thing is it is hard to remember, as bars didnt often proof back then so we were in a lot of bars before age 19. I think i even found my way into the Cook Douglass Pub before age 19.

Oh and 21... Dont have the slightest clue, maybe Olde Queens?

I celebrated my 21st birthday at my friend's apartment on Busch. First drink I ordered was about a week later at Stuff Yer Face a few hours before the 63-14 thumping of Louisville in 2008.

My first "legal" drink was at Olive Branch, 1 hour before my 21st birthday.
My first drink was, ahem, quite a few years before that.

My goal was to get a single drink at every bar in New Brunswick (or at least the main ones around campus and downtown). Started off with dinner and beers at Harvest Moon, ate some delicious ribs. Then Marita's Cantina (not sure why) and I vaguely remember a stop at Court Tavern where the bartender made me a tumbler-sized kamikazi "shot" when he heard it was my 21st. Next Olde Queens, where my "every bar in NB" plan officially soared off the rails. A few shots of disgusting Sambuca and other drinks and my night of drinking was officially over.

Finished the night off at some strip club I can't recall the name of on 22 in Green Brook (half my group ended up at Gogorama in Sayreville, where we were supposed to go, but the guy driving my car called an audible). I painted their bathroom red with those saucy, delicious Harvest Moon ribs, then half passed out with a dollar bill in my mouth as I struggled to make it to the girl's cleavage. Passing out on a bar top is frowned upon in the bar management and security world, so we had to leave. Went back home to NB, grabbed the kitchen garbage can and passed out hard.

I turned 21 the night of the celebrated Vietnam War teach- in at Scott Hall made famous by the comments of Profs. Susman and Genovese.,had my first legal the next night at Tumulty's.

I was the last group in NJ that could drink at 18, legally; drinking age went up by one year at a time, so I could drink legally every year at RU. Those were the days. Pubs on every campus and frat/house/dorm parties were a little out of control. Have no clue when my first legal drink was, since I started drinking at 12, lol (not regularly, but experimenting) and was drinking fairly regularly by the time I was 15. Was also able to get into local bars at 17 or so, so again 18 wasn't much of a milestone. 17 was the big milestone - getting my license...

Turned 21 at Olive Branch February 2005 (Senior year). Got the free shirt. Vomited. Drank some more. Went to Knight Club later in the night. Then back to fraternity house.

Don't remember my first drink at 21 in New Brunswick, but we had plenty of late night beers and burgers after closing time at Somogyi's tavern at the corner of Somerset St and Easton Ave when I was an underage soph.

On the other late nights after drinking it was a cheesesteak with onions, hot peppers and extra grease at Greasy Tony's next door. There were also many nights at the CT and Old Queens as well. A degenerate life style for sure.

Actually I just remembered my first legal drink was about eleven months beforehand in Toronto a day or two before the International Bowl, Ray Rice's last game for us. I remember there being a somewhat Rutgers-themed bar up there also, whose menu featured fat sandwiches and a "Better than Brower Chicken Sandwich." I think the owner was a Rutgers grad. I'm not sure if they had a special menu just for the International Bowl or what, but it was pretty cool.

First legal drink was at 18 in whatever the bar/restaurant was in the Howard Johnson's on Rte 22 in North Plainfield (Ground Round?) Then the Carousel Lounge, Older brother and his friends took me out for the night.

Tiki Bar on the Pt. Pleasant boardwalk.

My friends went into it with a plan and accomplished their goal. Started me off with rough stuff and novelty crap with hot sauce mixed in all chased by beer of course. Then they started with the creamy crap and stuff with clams and oysters floating in it.

I puked, but not before 21.

@Local Shill could probably tell you more about what happened between #15 and when I woke up on the beach.

I'll be 42 this July and I'm dead serious when I say that was the last time I puked. Ever.

First legal drink was in Germany at age 14. Followed by many more.
First legal drink in US was in Georgetown at the 4th Edition on M St., Age 19.
First drink when I turned 21. No idea.
I still have my Rutgers Pub Card. They were getting rid of them after December 31st, 1985. I got mine on October 20th, 1985. 21st birthday.

One place we frequented on Rt. 22 in Greenbrook was "The Goose & the Gander."

RU had a pretty vibrant on-campus pub network back in my day there. Frequented Busch pub, College Ave pub, and Douglass pub--all for a few before heading out to parties and other spots.

The drinking age was 18 when I turned 18, and still in high school. It was a Tuesday night I was in my bedroom doing homework when my dad came in and said there was a blond at the door with a 6 pack looking for me and if I didn't do something about it he would. It was a friend from school and after we finished the 6, we ended up at Honest Paul's Tavern in Atlantic Highlands and eventually the Trade Winds in Sea Bright. If I recall, Crystal Ship, memorialized in the Dead Milkmen song "Bitchin Camaro", were playing. Long term, we ended up dating for a few months after that. Short term we skipped school the next day.

The drinking age was increased to 19 in NJ soon after that but if you were 18 before the increase you were grandfathered in so I was legal throughout my days days at RU. 21 was a non event for me.My guess would be frat party, or one of the bars on Easton Ave.

Knight Club and Old Queens. That was after going to my hometown bar at 12:00 noon

My first legal drink was at the Limelight, where I'd already been going for two years. The bouncer recognized me and I told him "Hey, it's my birthday; do I get a free drink?" He said "No. But Happy Birthday. How old are you?" I replied "I'm finally 21" and we both laughed. My friends and I started there at 10pm I believe when they opened, left around 1am and closed out the Palladium. Recall my lady friend dancing on the speakers there. A good time had by all.

I think the year I turned 18 was the inaugural year of the new lowered drinking age. Many of the bars announced they would only serve those with county ID cards, so a bunch of us piled in a car and drove to Freehold over one of the holiday breaks to get the cards. First drink was at Joe Crine's Bar & Grill in Manasquan. Later known as Edgars and now Reef & Barrel.

Pretty sure it was at the Good Knight Pub, but it was anti-climatic as I had been grandfathered in since I was 19.
