OT: RU Men's Track

Impressive performance by Izaiah Brown in his Rutgers debut!! The freshman broke the school record in the 400M in his first ever race for RU, running 46.61! Thats crazy for a freshman, this early in the season, and running indoors to boot. This kid should be fun to watch in the coming years.

Hell, that's good for a senior outdoors, lol. But for a freshman in his first race, it's stellar. I can't say I'm shocked, though. Correct me if I'm wrong, but he actually went under 46 on a relay leg in high school. The kid is a stellar, national-class talent, and as an old 400 runner I couldn't be happier that coach Mulqueen has him to work with.

they also have Griffith in the 400 and the kid from UC Jimerson, not sure who else they have for the 4X400, but they are looking good, can't wait to see that event in the spring

My Sport Watching list: FB,Track(men preferably but I will watch women in upper level competition) ,Baseball(college a little Pro), some Collegiate wrestling, gymnastics(men and women),some high board diving,Pro Golf (upper level and the Champion Tour),A very small amount of College and Pro BB, a limited amount of Olympic ice skating, skiing and snow boarding,I will watch the Luge competition and Bob sledding.Does this compare favorably with what you like to watch?

With Crawford back @ long jump this winter, and spring, we have a chance to bring in more than a few Director's Cup points both seasons. Good stuff!

Girls track had a member break our HJ record in her first go around ... something like 4th in the nation. I really wish we'd concentrate on T&F/CC.

Get former athletes and/or students, who love the sport, to help get the program off the ground, just like has been done with wrestling and is being done with other sports, or wait a few more years.

I would love to see RU T&F a fully funded priority once we get our full B1G share. NJ produces a ridiculous amount of talent in T&F. We should rock the B1G on track. If women's soccer and wrestling can do it....

Mike is still coaching? He taught and coached my high school.

To put this in perspective, the world indoor record is 44.57 seconds. This kid we got is amazing.

Sam, the World Record time for 400 would have to be on a 200 meter track. The bubble is something like 330 meters, extremely oversized. So you can't compare the times.

And whoever asked, yes Mike Mulqueen is still coaching. He has to be closing in on 30 years at this point. Scratch that, website says he has been at RU for 37 years.

Our Olympic sports outside of one or two are on the come up. Men's lax has a chance to surprise in the spring.

How underfunded are we? Does anyone know?

Yeah, almost all of it as head coach. He was an assistant under Gags when I was in high school, and when Gags left a couple years before I got to Rutgers Mike took over. 33 years as head coach, I think. Amazing. And this kid could be the best sprinter we've had since Elliott Quow.

I'm pretty sure a freshman on the women's team also had a school record in the high jump. Not a bad way for the two of them to start their RU careers.
Don't we have a member on this board who has a daughter that's a freshman high jumper at RU? Seem to recall a couple of months ago.

BLewis, what years did you run at RU? Mike became head coach my junior year, which was Sept 1983. I ran XC and track.

Last I heard the Men's track program was 1/2 funded, which would be something like 6.2 scholarships. Rutgers definitely splits them up among a bunch of athletes, though. Although Brown was a stud in HS and may be getting the full ride. Worth it in my opinion. In the Big 10 meet you don't make a dent scoring 1 and 2 points once in a while. Need to hit the first or second for the 10/8 points.

Pretty sure Mens soccer is also half funded. Womens track and soccer are fully funded to make up for the football scholarships.

Last I heard we were only 25% funded but that was a few years ago.

I walked on in 1986. I ran (or attempted to run) the 400 as a freshman and sophomore. I tore up my hamstring in a time trial (maybe right before Millrose?), went from not much legspeed to tortoise-like, and gave up the sport. I started writing up the track meets for the Targum during my rehab, one thing led to another, and 25 years after graduating I still haven't gotten a real job.
BTW, if it's up to 6.2 I'm encouraged. It wasn't that high back in the day. I remember us trying to recruit Gary Satterwhite (who you may remember Newell; he was a junior at Rahway when you were a senior) against SMU and Seton Hall. Gary was running 46-point, like Brown. I think even he only got offered a partial scholarship. Not shockingly, he did not choose RU.

What do you mean by fully funded? As someone above posted, they think the men's T&F is 25% funded. Does this mean that 1/4 of the men's T&F team receives full scholarships? Does it mean 25% of the cost to run the program is covered by the athletic department and the other 75% comes out of student fees/general fund? Thanks!

Say a sport is allowed 20 scholarships, if it is fully funded it means we have a total of 20 scholarship athletes. That could be 20 full or 40 half or any combination equaling 20. If it is half funded then there would only be a total of 10 scholarships (whatever combination for a total of 10) on the team in a sport that allows 20. Just because you are allowed 20 scholarships does not mean that you have to fund and offer all 20.

The NCAA allows Women's T&F 18 scholarships but I think the men only have something like 11.2???? Don't quote me on that number. But if we are only half funded that means we only have a 5 or 6 scholarship total for the whole team.
