Since the Lenten season is upon us for those interested in some excellent takeout seafood for Good Friday, the Seafare Chippery is back in Fanwood. I used to go ages ago and then they closed I think at least 7 years ago. Well they are now open again and they redid the place. Still small and cramped but up to date. The cod pieces are pretty big but the chips were undercooked.

oh I cannot wait to restart the tradition of the annual pilgrimage on Good Friday to the Chippery in Fanwood. Tradition had been broken the last few years so its great to see some "old school traditions" live on. Too many of these long time hole in wall delicious eateries have just vanished from site. I am still holding out hope someone will have the idea to revive the old Mister Bee's at the Somervill Circle.

Rock...the chips were always undercooked and mushy, like em like that

There's a Chippery on Westfield Ave. on the Elizabeth/Roselle Park border that's not too bad.

Expensive, but not bad.

Grew up in Fanwood and then Scotch Plains, and those I knew called the place Fish & Chips. The location was odd, with a business surrounded only by the houses along South Avenue and on the surrounding neighborhood side streets. Never really thought of the food as wonderful, but it was a place to get fish & chips from time to time. The sign and that building, on an angled corner with a small parking lot and background trees hiding the neighborhood immediately behind them, is certainly a recognizable sight to me.

Yeah, Willis, I agree the location was odd. Takeout place plopped into the middle of residential. In addition to the Chippery, there's also Almighty Cod and Chippery in Westfield (unless they have closed by now) and don't forget Pete's Fish Market in Plainfield. Pete's has been there forever. I mainly go there to get uncooked seafood during grilling season, but they do make some prepared dinners/food for takeout.

Mansueto's in Watchung/Warren was good, but they are closed now.

Cod Almighty in Westfield is open. The wife of the main chef there as well as one of the other investors in the restaurant are RU alumni. I'll check but I believe that they still give out discounts if you show your RU alumni card.

In addition to the Cod and chips, they usually have excellent specials offered on their facebook page.

I stopped eating seafood on Fridays in Lent a few years ago to respect all animals.

A vegetarian fat sandwich hit the spot for me on Ash Wednesday, but I'll be in Boston on Friday.

We stumbled into Mr. Bee's many moons ago in a chemically altered condition.. The bees hanging from the ceiling were a true joy for us. I don't know if we ever actually ate anything . Too busy just enjoying a truly serendipitous experience. Good times..

I live in scotch plains and have never checked it out. Will definitely do so this weekend. And yes such an odd spot always wondered how business is

The last holdout in that wee ol' formerly Scottish bastion of Kearney is the Argyle.. Traditional.. Not cheap but worth a drop in if you are in the area..

The Chippery in Scotch Plains re opened about a year and a half ago. It was closed for quite a while before that.

That's been my family's Go-To place this lent and we've really enjoyed it. A couple things to know, however:
1) They're fairly expensive, for what you get. You can probably eat Sushi for the same price as their breaded, fried food. About $14 for a 8 shrimp meal with fries. Expect to pay $12 for a piece of fish, fries and a small cup of cole slaw. You could buy the same food at the supermarket for less than a quarter of the price.
2) They get extremely busy at dinner time. If it's after 5:30 you should call in your order ahead of time or expect at 30 minutes wait.

That being said, if you don't mind paying for it and call ahead, it's about as good a fish and chips as you can get inland.
