OT: Tennessee says you have to pay (more) for us to play

Bc we want to win
Winning is fun
Winning is addictive

Go to a huge school with years of success, and winning is in the culture

I'm hoping Rutgers can get there someday soon
And I truly believe we can
I guess we have different views on fun and winning. I can have fun at my old high school watching hard working kids that aren’t getting paid (yet). When RU beat Louisville those were student-athletes that were proud to represent RU. And we were proud of them and the university. That was fun. It was not about paying people to wear our jersey. If it’s now all about who pays the most money WTF are these players even doing on campus or going to class? Let them show up to practice and games like the pros do.

Expect prices to go up A LOT…seems like a perfectly reasonable response to what is happening. Adapt or fall apart.

Of course if the economy collapses (as it probably will soon enough) and it may not matter.

Enjoy while it lasts!

Just wait until private equity comes into the picture. It’s only a matter of time. PE is buying up youth sports clubs already so funding college teams in exchange for revenue share is next.

What if you found out BL and RR got paid - would it have taken the joy out of it?
I'm not busting balls - serious question

Some people can't seperate the two
And I understand that

I look at it like IDC if the kid gets paid, as long as they represent the school with class and perform at a high level
GS makes 5 mil/year - God bless him. Same opinion as w/the kids, be classy and win

I guess it comes down to this = the student-athlete is basically dead at P5 schools, at least in football and basketball - which may have already been the case before players were getting paid. It’s a shame that college decisions will simply be made based on which team pays the most. And the teams that pay the most will be the best. The end result will be a handful of elite teams that will dominate and many programs will disappear. I’m a purist. In my mind it’s like allowing countries to supply their Olympic athletes with legal performance enhancing drugs = who doesn’t want to see a pole-vaulter clear 30 feet one day? World records would be broken in every event by the US, China, Russia, and a handful of euro nations. That would be “fun” to watch but wouldn’t sit right with me and the rest of the countries would eventually stop showing up.

I get it
I'm just immune to it as it's been going on for years and I look at it as it 's just part of the game
It's like corruption and soccer - I don't necessarily like it, but it's happened forever

That's been going on in the Olympics for 5 decades.

LOL just wait until select players or teams hold fans and schools hostage. Say a team has a surprising great season, and they say they were paid less than their performance deserved. So going into a critical game or postseason they throwout X amount they want or they will not play. This Semi-Pro system can, and I think will devolve to games like this.

It’s only a matter of time until you see a players’ strike. CFB will go down the tubes the way all pro sports has.

Well they’d have to unionize & collectively bargain first….but yeah it could happen.

The difference is, fans were not forced to subsidize any payments they might have received. Greed will continue to erode part of the fan base. It already has.

I am a season ticket holder at Tennesse (and Rutgers). Was at the game Saturday and Tennessee put on an amazing game day experience with 102k showing up for Kent State and tons of people were on campus 5 hours before the game. It is a sight to see. Meanwhile, just about every single sport has been doing very well from hoops to women’s soccer to baseball to golf etc. They are moving quickly as the landscape changes.
There is pride within the population in supporting the flagship State University in Tennessee and a lot of other states. There is pride within the population in tearing down the State University in New Jersey. Makes a huge difference.

If Rutgers even thought about doing that, all kinds of losers would demand that the State cut Rutgers funding or something really stupid.

If we become a perineal top program, nobody on this board will care that we pay the kids

Greg’s making 5mil / year and nobody blinks

1. So what should a college decision come down to? I'm going to guess any factors you list Will benefit the schools who pay the most for their athletic budgets.

2. In a subsequent post you mentioned fans not being "forced" to subsidize payments for BL/RR (if they had received any hypothetically).
But you were. Fans were forced to subsidize their scholarship, and their housing, and their food and their training and their travel and every other benefit they received from the AD.
Whst exactly did you think ticket, parking and "mandatory donations" were going towards?

Realistically, give me a percentage of chance Rutgers will compete with the big boy donor programs and will be a PERENNIAL top program. By the way, you posted "perineal" which is the taint area.

Depends on NIL situation w big companies or whale donor

I’d give it a ~25 % chance
Lot of big $ people / big $ companies in the tri state area

I've said this before here when speaking of lower status schools and/or conferernces (ACC/B12) and NIL/portal. There's a balance between money and playing time that's different for each individual and while some schools may not have as much money, there's still opportunity to achieve good goals and raise your profile.

Agree with you on this.

Schools will be able to get some good players (Rival 4- Stars) because they don't want to sit on the bench of a top 10 team waiting for a turn that may never come.

Last year Pitt went 3-9 manly because we didn't have a good QB and score points.

The Notre Dame transfer QB was tried 1st, then the Penn State transfer QB and finally Pitt QB for 2 games.

Pitt then gets an Alabama transfer QB Eli Holstein who was a Rival 4-Star. Sounds good but can he perform.

Came to Pitt because he thought the opportunity to play early was there (why leave Alabama and transfer to Pitt).

Although the verdict is still out, to date he has performed well so far.

Eli is now Pitt's starting QB as a rs freshman who never played a college football game while at Alabama.

What was impressive to me was the fact that Pitt was down late in the 4th quarter to both Cinci and WVU and Eli engineered both comebacks for the Pitt wins. For an inexperienced frosh QB, I found that very impressive.

Again it is still early so will have to wait to see how the rest of the season works out.

HAIL TO PITT!!!!

With 29 guys sitting out, it looked like a union protest !!!
Was it? Did they lineup outside and not allow other players play? They sat out a meaningless game and protected their draft status. Apples to steaks comparison here.

We live in the USA - not Russia, North Korea or Nazi Germany

When someone protests, they're making a conscious decision to do so
Nobody is forbidding them from working - call them scabs, traitors, whatever term you like, but they're welcome to work if they see fit

Re. the bowl game, a few guys protected their draft status (Verse, Johnny, Key, Fiske and a few others) - the rest (20 ish) sat out bc they were pissed (rightfully so) or in the portal, and thus gave ESPN the proverbial middle finger

I’m posting because I am a fan/alumni and if the money I pay for my tickets/concessions/parking supports the football program, players, and facilities that’s OK with me. But if someone is asking me to then write another check so we can beg Johnny QB to come to Rutgers then IDC about winning football games that much. In the end this mess is not about football it’s all about making other people rich, and for the fans that want to “win” it’s become a d!<k measuring contest = one that unfortunately RU will never win because NJ isn’t Tuscaloosa - we actually have more in life than a college football team to keep us entertained.

Yeah, but that’s how it is. Either accept or don’t. You don’t need to whine about it.
Don’t be like those little boys that cried wolf on this board.

Guess having an opinion different than yours is “whining”…pretty simple - if you want RU to win that badly you should go ahead and donate your savings to a bunch of kids that play the game of football. All RU fans in favor of paying for wins should be writing huge checks because a couple thousand each won’t make a dent. LOL = RU fans will NEVER do that - but they’ll talk plenty about it here. And yet we live in one of the richest states in the country! It’s comical.

Well lucky for you Tennessee doesn't seem to be asking for another check.
The article is about just an increase in "tickets/concessions/parking" to support "the football program, players, and facilities".

Just now that the AD will use some of the money for direct payments to players too.

Just imagine when Johnny finds out Jimmy is getting paid more than him by the school. This will not end well…

Wow. Already changing the argument and moving on? That was quick.

Does Joe know that Kirk is getting paid more?
Does Pat know that Mark and Dave are getting paid more?
Does Jerimiah know that Dylan and Ace are getting paid more?
Did Kyle know that Gavin was likely getting paid more?

I can't believe we haven't gone winless in Football/Basketball with this pay disparity the last couple of years.

The entire coaching staffs must be on constant revolt and hate each other for being paid differently.

Look at all the disasters in the MLB, NFL and NBA from players getting different salaries.

Still wondering why people get mad at kids for making money, when Greg's making 5 mil year, Dabo 10 mil, Norvell 10 mil, Saban 12 mil, etc.

Note, I couldn't care less who makes what - just think it's amusing people getting salty about kids making $$ when the coaches are making it hand over fist

Those are employees with employment contracts. There is a measurable pay scale (i.e., HC vs AC vs. S&C / conference / performance). You are mixing apples and oranges. Seems that folks have completely forgotten what college athletics was supposed to be about = student-athletes representing their school. Like I’ve said before just wait until private equity steps in because that’s the only way many schools will be able to fund their programs.

FWIW, I’m not oblivious to the new reality. I just don’t care enough about winning to pay a bunch of kids to wear a jersey they don’t care about unless the check arrives every month. And I suspect I’m not alone because collectively the RU fanbase could probably outspend Knoxville or Tuscaloosa 10X but our NIL war-chest is a joke. In NJ we have so many entertainment options that our lives don’t have to revolve around a college football team.

Coaches are employees of the schools with defined performance targets, mutual rights/obligations, etc. Kids are not employees (yet). Huge difference. Greg can’t just decide tomorrow to enter the transfer portal so he can make more money at Alabama, and if he does leave there is a whole bunch of contractual implications to protect RU. The simple solution is probably to make all athletes employees of the schools…but what a mess that would be…

Coaches enter the transfer portal all the time - it’s called hopping jobs for a better opportunity

Often times, is at the last minute, leaving kids in limbo & staff in limbo

Greg leaving for Tampa is a perfect example of that

There's usually very little to protect a school from a coach leaving. I rail about coaching contracts all the time with the "heads I win tails you lose" problem. You let them go and you owe tens of millions these days (freaking crazy 7-10 year deals lately) but if they leave you it can cost little to nothing.

It's seeing the irresponsibility of coaching deals that get signed which would give me pause on how schools would go about paying players. They don't handle coaching deals smartly so why should player deals be any different. I think the chances of money not being utilize wisely would be just as bad.

Even if you did try to utilize it wisely, it's still very hard and you'll get things wrong. As I said above, pro teams put a lot more effort time and resources into this stuff and still get it wrong. See FSU and their 12M spent this year. Paying players doesn't bother me at all, trying to be judicious and utilizing whatever you have wisely and to the fullest potential is more of an issue in my mind.

Not quite that simple = obviously depends on the contract terms but there are buyout clauses, etc. that make it entirely different from a player hopping in the transfer portal. There is almost nothing tethering the player to a school.

Also, In the grand scheme of things we are talking about a lopsided coach to player ratio.

There’s virtually nothing holding a coach from leaving

Also, not all players are making bank
A select few are really cashing in
