My father in law has a pretty bad termite situation in Marlboro. Called 1 company and they wanted $2000 and it's guaranteed for a year. We have no experience with this so don't know if that's good or bad. Any input would be very much appreciated.

I live in Marlboro. Had termites several years (4-5) back and it was in the $2000 range for year 1. $250/yr. after that for the continued guarantee. We used Arrow Exterminators who we use for regular pest control. There was no discount for current customer status.

I own a pest control company in Texas. I will assume they are subterranean termites. Every company should guarantee the house for at least one year after a full treatment and offer a renewable guarantee. What kind of service are they proposing? A lot of companies offer baiting systems these days, such as Sentricon. They tend to espouse the non-intrusiveness of using bait. I highly recommend using Termidor, the best termite liquid treatment available. Termidor can protect a home for up to 15 years. Don't let anyone scare him with stories about "pumping lots of pesticide around the house". A treatment with Termidor is the way to go, price wise and for the sake of long lasting protection. Collect at least three estimates, with at least one from a regional company and one from the big boys like Terminix or Orkin. Contact me if you have any other questions.

Can a home owner treat the termites themselves?

Can a home owner treat the termites themselves?
Liquid termiticides like Termidor need to be injected down to the foundation footer. Termite treatments often require drilling abutting attached slabs or basement floors. Most homeowners don't have the equipment or wherewithal to do a proper treatment. We have performed several treatments for home owners who tried to do it themselves. You can find "do it yourself" baiting systems at Home Depot or Lowes but they are pretty worthless. They all have disclaimers recommending using the product in conjunction with a professional treatment. Given the type of damage termites can cause, it is not something you want to skimp on.

Thanks for all the information its very helpful. Do you think the continued guarantee is necessary especially if they use Termidor?

I wouldn't renew the coverage if they use Termidor. Don't let them use any other termiticide. Taurus is the generic form of Termidor and would work as well.

Is it necessary to treat inside and out? All the companies are giving a different story.

Thanks again for all your help!

If the termites are not present on the inside, we usually just treat the exterior perimeter. Termidor will control the colonies through such a treatment. Some companies will propose to treat every plumbing area in the house, which is going overboard.
