3 dead-ball penalties were called on Charlotte after an Eastern Michigan TD. So EMU kicked off from the opponent's 20-yard line.

...I know they're still new to 1A ball but how bad is Charlotte? 34-6 to Eastern Michigan?

Charlotte should have commited three or four more penalties to get the ball to the 1/2 yard line. Ball has to go at least 10 yards for kicking team to recover. Would be a touchback. Ball out to 25 (thx Brodo)

For the past few years, following a touchback the ball is placed at the 25.

Look at the video. They kicked off at the 20 and it was recovered at the 18. It was a 2 yard kick.

The kick went nearly the 10 yards before it was touched and pushed back towards the 18....

Definitely the right thing to try, no down side

Yes. But the nearest a legal KO could be placed is between the 10 and 11 yard line in order for it to be recovered by the kicking team. Of course, if the receiving team touches it first, it's a free ball. Once the ball crosses the goal line untouched, it's a touchback and out to the 25. Can't be recovered by the kicking team.
Would have been funny to see because no one would think about that beforehand and would have resulted in a panic situation in the end zone. I'd say at least 15 minutes to get the call right by the officials.
Almost similar to the RU Garden State Bowl onside kick that after numerous touches, ended up in the ASU end zone with a RU recovery for a TD. Penalty on RU for illegal touching and it nullified the play. It was still fun to watch.

sometimes after a score, if a penalty is given, the kicking team kicks off from the 50 yard line...I am surprised that when that happens you don't see more on sides kicks..... if you don't recover maybe the other team gets it around their 35 or so

anyway, back in 1985 RU played at Florida, who was ranked number 3 in the land, but under punishment, so their ranking
would not get them to a major bowl.....

RU came back from a 28-7 deficit when Florida put in their reserve qb, and he promptly made a few major mistakes that allowed RU to tie the game with little time on the clock

on the tying score there was a 15 yard penalty assessed against Fla, so RU kicked off from midfield....they onsided the kick and got the ball with a chance to win..... a wide open back over the middle just missed catching the winner, a couple of turnovers, the game ended in a tie.

Dick Anderson was our coach, and I thought he made a gutsy call on the onsides kick...

IIRC we played Army at home and recovered two non-onside kicks that were kicked into a very strong wind that Army couldn't get to before we did. I think they landed at like their 30 or 40 bounced around and we recovered.
