OT: Tommy's Tavern + Tap

Elite in what way?
Seems the one in Sea Bright- the original?-- was a neighborhood bar/restaurant. Thought it was pretty good, but not off the charts great. They expanded quite a bit. Sadly, the owner, Tommy B, passed away in the past year. Not sure what impact that has had on the restaurants. They have a chain of Tex-Mex restaurants too.

If Yelp reviews are correct, Staten Island location opened on Sept. 12, 2018.

Tommy was instrumental in the rebuild of Sea Bright's downtown after Sandy. He and the restaurant did a lot for the town and Sea Bright Fire Rescue. IIRC, he was both an accountant and lawyer before putting his energy into restaurants. A truly good guy.

For a second there I thought he was talking about Tom's Tavern in Howell. 😁

Tommy was originally a partner in “coal fire” in Red Bank now called urban coal house. Used to go all of the time when I lived there. Partnership had a falling out. Tommy moved on and started Tommy’s in Sea Bright. Met Tommy while he was in Red Bank as he was front of house. Personable guy very passionate, had a vision the other partners did not see (his words).

Tommy passed on July 5. Here's the story of how he got started in restaurants.

Good, solid food, not elite but then again there is not much out there since covid that is elite. We go to the one in Princeton probably once a month and have not been disappointed. Prices are fair and the menu is pretty diverse.

Always good, not elite. Service usually very good as well. Have gone to a few different ones over the years. Sea bright was first. They bought out most of the Zinburger locations when that went under. Also own the Tio, Taco, Tequila locations. Triple T is their thing.

Hell no, but I drive by it all the time. It must be on some bike owners travel guide. Because Saturday’s and Sunday’s it’s always packed.
It's on my list. Wondering if @RU_DIO been there?

Ashamed to admit after living in the area almost forever, finally tried Mulligan's recently, which is elite in comparison to the "Tom's" up the road. Very solid tavern with friendly and outstanding service. Every time we would drive by, it was packed, and we kept going. It's a staple for us now.

Its just OK not sure what the atttaction is really for the one in Freehold that is always packed. At least the one in Sea Bright has the river to hang in the back. Its very annoying to try and get a table.

I have been a few times to the one on Route 3 Clifton

I usually sit at the bar and have a few apps and a couple of cocktails
It was enjoyable enough
Nice atmosphere but noisy as noted by others

There are some establishments that are better eating at the bar, some are better at a table
Can't explain why, but this is a bar place for me

Mentioned in another thread. When I get invited to play at Eagle Oaks, my buddy calls ahead and orders beers on ice and cocktails to go. We run and grab the bags and leave. Female bartender he knows is awesome. Cool place that I would love to go grab a beer but not the place many are interested in giving a try.

Multiple people we know have gotten food poisoning from the one in bridgewater. We avoid like the plague.

I'm not saying you are wrong, but I haven't heard this. We've gone there and have gotten take out multiple times in the past 2 years without any issues.

Better than average bar food, not elite though. They have a few local craft brews on tap, but could use more. Taphouse 20/20 in Somerset has a better beer list and equivalent food.

Bridgewater has breweries ?

MrScrew & I had lunch at the one in Princeton at Marketfair on Saturday.
Nothing "elite" . Large, loud. Food was good, cocktails were good as well.
I went to the one in Princeton on a Saturday to watch the World Cup and they only had 3 servers and said wait was two hours went to the Brickhouse across the way it was much better

we sat at the bar, around 12:30pm. Funny thing was the bartender took my order then walked away without taking @RUScrew85 order. He spent about 5 minutes trying to wave him down to put in his order. LOL

None in Bridgewater, meant local as in any from NJ. But within a 15 minute drive from that location is Flounder, Ashton, Jersey Cyclone, Oppurtunity. Plus a ton of others a bit further away.
You also got Anheuseur-Busch in Newark too. Although, I don’t know if they are still a full fledged brewery anymore . Newark used to have a lot : Ballantine , Pabst , Rheingold

Agree here as Coal Fire in Red Bank kept the same menu upon departure.

Sea Bright restaurant is aces! great service and food is tremendous. Anytime I have friends down it is a requested destination.

With regard to the one on Rt. 9 in Freehold, I'll borrow a quote from @zappaa 's dad.

"Nobody goes there anymore. It's too crowded."

Mulligan's I've been to plenty of times. For bar food(burgers, stews, sh*t like that) I'd rank it pretty damn good. You're not leaving saying, "that's the best damn meal I've ever had" rather, that was good, I'll take my leftovers for a midnight snack.

Toms Tavern should not be compared to Mulligans, Woodys or the Cabin. It's just not a bar/restaurant. It's a shot and beer joint and its EASILY among the best in the state in that genre. The bartenders, especially Sue, are fantastic.

The Cabin now sucks ass, Woody's never been and I thought Tom's was just a shot and beer joint just never been because I don't drink. So, the shot and beer joints are not really appealing to me.

Cabin was a great spot. How many places have chefs international ruined at this point?

I give Rods one more year before they ruin that place.

Did they F Up Frankies in Pt Pleasant too?
Was told that wasn’t part of the sale originally but it looks like they didn’t fare Covid well. Used to love the place for burger and beer. Went there last week not sure I will be rushing back. Burger over cooked (wife) French dip was good, chicken pot pie (father in law) cold and inedible, wings okay but not up to Frankie’s standards, rueben (mother in law) she tolerated but wasn’t happy.
