Ok. Ok. Y'all know now that Janice and I are coming to New Jersey for the game on September 5th. But we are actually planning to be in Jersey on Wednesday September 2nd. We are thinking, I emphasize thinking, about staying in Atlantic City on the 2nd at a casino. IF WE DO, where should we stay that is safe and fun?

Next question.....Thursday and Friday nights we will stay with her Jersey relatives around Jackson(south of I-95). Friday we will go into NYC for the day. Saturday we will drive to Piscataway for the game. When does the game start and when does tailgating start?

Next question.....where is a decent place to stay after the game? I need names of hotels for a Saturday night stay. Or, do they require a 2 night minimum? I really am trying NOT to spend more than $250 a night maximum for a hotel.

Any assistance that you can give me would be greatly appreciated! Janice is bringing a spare suitcase to load up with hard rolls(crusty on the outside and tender on the inside) and a 2 month supply of Taylor ham. I told her that there is no such thing as Taylor Ham, it is a pork roll!

Saturday we will drive to Piscataway for the game. When does the game start and when does tailgating start?

It is a noon game, and tailgating will start before dawn for some people. I'm hoping to have my crew set up before 8. We're also planning on tailgating after the game.

Edit: you'll need to work out where you'll park and how you'll get to the tailgating lots.

Thanks DJ. I am working towards the parking issue with Mrs. Screw. My hope is to park at a hotel nearby and have Mr/Mrs Screw transport us to the tailgate area.

Atlantic City is the most depressing place on earth & should be avoided unless all you want to do is gamble

Be wary of travel times especially Friday due to the inevitable Labor Day weekend shore traffic. Otherwise, enjoy your visit to the fullest!

The Heldrich Hotel is the other nice hotel in New Brunswick. It's newer than the Hyatt and also located right on the main drag, George St, so you quickly walk to numerous restaurants and bars, not to mention the train station and bus shuttle to the Rutgers Stadium. I've stayed at both, and prefer the Heldrich. The Marriot is about a 3- 4 block walk to the downtown restaurants and bars. Can't go wrong with either.

On Centennial Ave in Piscataway, even closer to the Stadium is The Embassy Suites and next door Radisson hotels. A bit cheaper, but closer drive to the stadium.

I doubt you will need to pay more than $150 at any of these, especially if you book in advance. I always check Trip Advisor.com for reviews.

The Hyatt in downtown New Brunswick is the place to stay.

If you will be in NYC on Friday, and tailgating with the Screws on Saturday morning, then it probably makes sense to check with the Screws to see which direction they are coming from, and spend Friday night in a hotel convenient to their trip to the stadium. You don't necessarily need to be in downtown New Brunswick (since you'll likely spend Friday evening in NYC, and arrive at your hotel in time to go to sleep ).

There are about 10,000 hotel rooms within 15 miles of New Brunswick, so you should have no problem finding a decent room at a brand owned by Hyatt, Hilton, Marriott, etc.

All great advice! IF we go to AC, it would be to gamble only. Maybe we should just forget AC and meet some of y'all somewhere for dinner and drinks Wednesday September 2nd? I Don't know what is the best course of action at this point.

I went ahead and booked a room at the Hyatt in New Brunswick for Saturday night. It was a decent deal in my opinion. Everywhere close to a football game down South requires a 2 night minimum. So I thought 1 night was a steal.

As a Jersey resident (north Jersey)..its actually Taylor Ham! But that's for a different day. Ha.

And as a Jersey resident, I don't want to dissuade you from going to AC...but there's nicer casinos popping in Pennsylvania right over the border from Jersey. Mt. Airy and Sands are two that you can consider as well, if you want to gamble.

Please don't let these people discourage you from going to Atlantic City. It is just as safe as any major tourist area anywhere...just be aware of your surroundings like you should be anywhere you go. The false notion that it is the wild west is totally ridiculous!

Most Rutgers ticket holders live within 90 minutes from the stadium, so there isn't enough demand for hotel rooms to require a 2 night stay (plus there are about 10,000 rooms in the area and another 100,000 hotel rooms within an hour).

Nonetheless, since the game starts at noon, you may want to stay in the NB area Friday night.

I'm not sure if where you are coming from? If it's Norfolk, I would consider taking the Cape May Ferry and splurging on a night in Cape May. It's a straight ride up to Jackson from there. Have fun. $$$$

Agree totally on Cape May.

Also, be sure to post in the thread about what yo think Huskers looks like. You and he will meet one day and this is a great way to break the ice. Probably.

We are staying in Jackson, NJ Friday night and leaving early Saturday morning for tailgating in Piscataway. Then staying Saturday night in New Brunswick at the Hyatt. Then Sunday heading back to Arkansas!

Janice and I are looking forward to meeting all y'all at the tailgate area. Be sure to give her hell about the Taylor ham versus pork roll thingy.

Don't listen to this. THe borgata is great, shows, spas, bobby flays steakhouse, check out the beach and boardwalk, plenty to do, and yes you can play some poker, blackjack, craps or roulette is so inclined.

No doubt Huskers is 6'2" 235 lbs of linebacker mentality with grey hair and a full attitude! He drinks whatever the hell he wants to and enjoys it whether you like it or not. He is fiscally conservative and socially fairly liberal and looks you in the eyes when he talks and means what he says. He doesn't give a damn about your past but embraces your future and thinks Tom Osborne would have made a great president, or next door neighbor!

He supports his home team but keeps his options open about other teams with the exception of hating Oklahoma and texass!

Hell, I've never met him but like the hell out of him already!

I think the point is that AC is nasty and gross, not necessarily unsafe.

I've met him, and now I like him even more!!! Southern and Huskers for Presidents!!

Count me among those in the group who recommend you skip going to Atlantic City. Your alternate plan to meet up with some folks and do dinner and drinks someplace, ideally someplace more pleasant than AC, is a good idea.

Hey Southern!
I'm headed to Little Rock in a few weeks. I'll shoot you an email. Hopefully we can get together.
Glad to hear you're coming to am RU home game. I consider your visit to be a good luck omen for the 2015 season!

I still like AC, but if you want somewhere quieter and more genteel to stay, stay at the Stockton Seaview Resort, about 5 miles inland of AC. If you like golf, it's held numerous major championships and if you don't like golf, it's a gorgeous old hotel with tons of charm (the wife might love it) and luxurious amenities and amazing food. It's now owned and run by Stockton University, with most of the staff being highly motivated students and young people, who provide great service. You can see the golf course, intracoastal waterway and AC in the distance. You can enjoy a great resort hotel and be in AC in 10 minutes for gambling or other entertainment.

if you end up goin to AC make sure to get some lunch sandwiches from White House sub shop

Go to AC. As others have said, stay at the Borgota. For a good meal, eat at the Knife & Fork (south end of town near the Tropicana).

The Cape May suggestions are spot on.

The exit numbers on the Garden State Parkway are mile markers with..

- Cape May being 1.
- Wildwood (classic boardwalk and pier amusement park stuff) is at 6-7...
- AC is around 40... the Borgata is the best of the bunch... though it is not on the boardwalk.
- Asbury Park (if you are an insane Springsteen Fan and just want to take pics outside the Stone Pony) is around 100.
- The "Rutgers" exit is Route 18 at mile 105.
- The NYC exit would be via the NJ Turnpike at mile 129.

But if you just want NYC for a day and not to stay there overnight.. go to exit 131 for Metro Park and park there and take a train... or go to New Brunswick and your hotel and take a train from New Brunswick.

If driving around the state.. know that it is a very crowded state.. expect a certain level of rudeness on the road. Don't get upset.. just mutter.. "Jersey".. and "Bless your heart".

If you are coming to NY/NJ area for the first time go the WTC memorial and museum (make reservations if you can ) and take the SI ferry ride which is free and goes right past the Statue of Liberty and has a wonderful view of Manhattan.

Southern -- This has all the makings of a magical vacation:
  • You are staying with your in-laws.
  • You are hanging out with RUScrew
  • You selected Norfolk State as the Rutgers game to attend
  • You've already picked a fight with your wife (over Taylor Ham vs Pork Roll)
You're going to love New Jersey.

Thats not technically true - the Parkway starts/ends north of Cape May (Lower Township) at exit 0.

Mrs Screw has one of the best tailgates so you will be set there. And no shame at all to haves hers as a base camp and still visit others.

Here's another option to consider for Sep 2nd. If I had one day to spend at the Jersey Shore, it would be at Williams Cottage Inn in Beach Haven on Long Beach Island (exit 63 off the Garden State Parkway). The Inn is located directly across the street from the beach. After spending a day at the beach, Atlantic City is less than an hour away (Exit 40) if you want to gamble at a casino in the evening.

if you are driving up 95/395 via Delaware, Atlantic City is a bit of an excursion, and Cape May makes no sense to me. You would add some much more driving to an already long drive.
