OT- trip to NJ

Here's another option to consider for Sep 2nd. If I had one day to spend at the Jersey Shore, it would be at Williams Cottage Inn in Beach Haven on Long Beach Island (exit 63 off the Garden State Parkway). The Inn is located directly across the street from the beach. After spending a day at the beach, Atlantic City is less than an hour away (Exit 40) if you want to gamble at a casino in the evening.

My wife was looking heavily at Beach Haven! She and her family went there every year when she was itty bitty.

There is just not enough time to do everything that we would like to do!

However, Southern can easily make a detour in Virginia, take the incredibly awesome Chesapeake Bay Bridge-Tunnel from Norfolk (the same team we'll be playing Labor Day weekend) and take the DelMarVa peninsula north, then take the ferry to Cape May (or, just head to the peninsula from Maryland or Delaware). Cape May (where my family vacations every other year) is wonderful and a great place to really enjoy the New Jersey Shore. It's historic, has great beaches, and some really nice restaurants.

I'm incredibly jealous! Maybe I should come down (from Massachusetts) for the game just to meet Southern!

Nah, trust me on this. I am not worth driving down to see. At least I wouldn't drive to see me. But evidently I will drive to see y'all!

This should be a great trip! W are still looking at places to stay in Cape May for Wednesday night.

Janice is looking at La Mer Beachfront Inn. Anyone know about this place?

Southern -- That's a little more than 2 blocks from where we usually stay (The Ocean Club). As for location, it's a bit further from the "hustle and bustle" of the Washington Street Mall (the main drag). But, you can either take the trolley, walk, or even drive. The beaches are great there and a bit quieter.

Atlantic City is the most depressing place on earth & should be avoided unless all you want to do is gamble

From someone that grew up in Jackson, I think nigh two will challenge night one for depressing.

Thats not really true. Going down to Norfolk would add two hours to the trip (since there is no really good east/west route across Virginia - you have to go way up to 64 then go way south again). But that on a normal weekend. Im guessing labor day weekend that route is packed, as is the alternative - going across MD via the Bay Bridge and cutting across MDs eastern shore and Delaware.

Basically anything involving going near the ocean labor day weekend is probably going to add several hours to the trip.

Really shouldn't have let a few individuals dissuade you from experiencing AC while visiting NJ. Everyone has an opinion and you should go and form yours. If AC is too gross, then you may won't to avoid NYC too.

LOL.

You may be correct! But I think our hosts(her cousin and husband) like to drink heavily so it might be interesting!
That's good. Depending on where you are in Jackson you might be closer to some good moonshine than you would be back in Arkansas. Have a great trip.

You're comparing NYC to AC? Well, at least @Southern Gentleman now has a way to gauge the value of your suggestions.

Saying he shouldn't be dissuaded from experiencing AC is like saying he shouldn't be dissuaded from snorting spicy mustard. It's an experience you won't regret missing.

If you are going to Jackson, then be sure to go to Six Flags Great Adventure which is located there.

There is a ton to do in NJ, what are you into or what would you like to do? Let me know and I can suggest some places to go.

Same with NYC.

Gotta love the North Jersey trash making AC out to be a complete s#!thole to an out of stater. And people wonder why the average NJ resident trashes Rutgers & NJ kids don't want to play here.

You're comparing NYC to AC?

Yes. The Air is toxic and the streets are filthy in NYC. And the people are extremely rude. This is apparent the moment you step into the City. But NY is a great time and adventurous visit. AC is no NYC but it's also a great time an adventurous visit. Do both Southern Gent

Ok. So we will drive to Cape May from Harrisburg, PA on Wednesday September 2nd. It looks like we are staying at the hotel mentioned previously. Then Thursday and Friday nights in Jackson, NJ and I will drink myself towards oblivion to avoid the struggle of boredom. Friday will be spent in NYC asking locals for directions while speaking Southern Redneck to them(that should be fun).

I guess we will bypass AC as I have been there before(15-20 years ago) and SO many tell me it is a toxic wasteland/cesspool. Maybe we will drive to Asbury Park and say hello to the E Street band(I am guessing that there is not a chance in hell that any of them would be there anyway).

I am guessing that I probably should NOT carry my gun into NYC for the day.

I always get a kick out of people asking for directions in NYC. If you are at 5th Ave and 35th St, and you are trying to get to 44th St, just start walking along 5th Ave. If the next block says 34th St, turn around and go the other way. The streets are numbered in consecutive order. (Aside from that, you probably have a smart phone with Google Maps.)

And, probably not.

What's a smart phone? My dog is smart however.

Don't even think about bringing your gun into NJ - if you get caught, its a felony, even if licensed in your own state!

I have been going to Cape May since the 60's and still enjoy it. Maybe stay another day there if possible on Thursday. For your short stay I suggest a ride down to Sunset Beach where you can hit the CM Lighthouse SP and gunnery fort, & at Sunset Beach the old remains of the WW1 concrete ship Atlantis and a lookout tower, plus find raw Cape May Diamonds on the beach. They also have a flag ceremony every night at sunset honoring a different veteran each day flying their casket flag http://www.sunsetbeachnj.com/Flag-Ceremony

If you & the wife like wine the 2 best in the area that wife and I enjoy are...and have some for Jackson???
1. http://www.turdovineyards.com/ We like the red Rubino they make but all are good
2. http://willowcreekwinerycapemay.com/ They make great Sangria that vary through out the summer both a red and white
For beer its http://capemaybrewery.com/

Hope this helps a little[/QUOTE]

I'm hoping he was joking about that. If not.......do NOT bring a weapon to NJ - we are draconian on firearms possession here.

There are some difficult addresses. In midtown, a foreign tourist asked me about an address.. something like 500 North Broadway.. I could not recall what the split broadway downtown was called.. (its West Broadway).. and then above Times Square broadway is split... and the numbers do not correspond to similar avenue numbers.

As best I could I explained the south-north block numbering and how the avenues are ordered east to west.. and how the buliding numbers along east-west originate on.. 5th? I knew then, I forget now. But I couldn't tell him if he could easily walk to 500 North Broadway or take a subway or which one.

njdirt,
THAT helps a lot! We are trying to pack in as much activity as possible in our short stay in Jersey.
Thanks!

Too much to do in NYC to have to make it down to Jackson in the same day. Pick a hotel and stay thurs night. If you like harness racing, Jackson is close to Freehold Racetrack. Maybe skip AC for some beach action or Monmouth Pk.

Ignore everyone who says to avoid AC. The city has it's struggles but it's still a great place for a short visit. Borgata is the place to stay and if you want something a little smaller, the Golden Nugget is my choice. Both are in the same safe area and are nice with good restaurants. If you're set on the boardwalk area, I'd go for Ceasars. They've been updating the rooms and you can hang at Jimmy Buffets Landshark bar on the beach for some food and drinks. Enjoy your visit.

One suggestion Southern: leave your Confederate flag at home.

My great grandfather was a Confederate colonel. I occasionally tend to his grave in Brookland , Ark. After the war of Northern Aggression, he was in his early 60's and married a young farmer's daughter. Despite the significant age difference, he fathered a daughter(my grandmother, Maude Nelms). At least we THINK he was the father. You never know if it was him or some younger stud.

While I respect my heritage and defend many things Southern, the Confederate battle flag is not the flag of OUR country. It is NOT even the correct flag of the South. I have no issue with it being taken down and put in a museum. That is where it belongs!

But do remember your history. It was a Democratic governor and a Democratic legislature that decided to fly it in South Carolina in the 1st place back in the early 1960's as a protest to Civil rights legislation. It was a Republican governor and a Republican legislature that passed legislation to bring it down and relegate it to a museum where it should have always been. It should NEVER have been raised in the 1st place.

I do not own any of the Confedrate flags. I do remember in my youth seeing memorabilia at my grandmothers home of the Civil war reunion in 1911, along with some money of the Confederacy and a Stars and Bars flag. I think my damn cousins stole it all.

Have a drink at the Brown Bar at Congress Hall. Have a drink at the Ugly Mug. Go to Lobster House for a 3-4 pound lobster for dinner or just sit outside for lunch at the raw bar. Lobster House gets very crowded so go early.

Southern,

If you find yourself in a grocery store or a convenience store you'll wonder what the whole Pork Roll / Taylor Ham debate is all about because all of the packages for sale clearly say PORK ROLL :)

Hope you have a great trip!

Make sure you take Janice through the quaint shops at the Washington Mall in Cape May. You can grab a beer at the Ugly Mug. If you like fresh seafood, especially blue claw crabs, you can go to the Raw Bar and sit outside on the docks and get fresh seafood for lunch. No need to get dressed up to sit outside on the dock and enjoy some great fresh seafood if you like that kind of thing.

FYI, you will have to drive from Cape May to Lobster House Raw Bar for lunch but if you want fresh seafood it is worth it. Here is a blurb I found:

The Lobster House—with its massive restaurant, raw bar, fish market, coffee shop, and even a docked schooner where you can enjoy a cocktail in the summer—is a true Cape May tradition. Seafood doesn’t get any fresher than this—the Lobster House has its own fishing fleet.
