Yes getting close to a 19 year old and starting a friendship would put that interpreter in a trusted position of a close confident.
Also the resume being full of holes have a con man feel , meaning the interpreter could very well have had Ohtani's full trust and be in a position to access Ohtani's finances for his own use.
But I still feel Ohtani knew more than is being claimed now and did give his "friend" the money to pay the bookie .
As for betting with the change from he knew to he never knew I wonder if the truth will come out if Ohtani doesn't press theft charges and since the bookie never interacted with Ohtani, everything the bookie says about his involvement would be hearsay and discounted if Ohtani denied it
Short of confessions, the fastest way to track if this was the translator placing his own bets, or if he was placeing them on behalf of Ohtani, is to see if there were any early winning bets and then see if the winning money could be tracked from the bookie, to the translator, to Ohtani's bank account.
Just think about this- - -The NFL announced that Tom Brady has been suspended without pay for four games for violating the NFL policy on the integrity of the game. That was how many years ago and about having too little air in a friggin football? You're up MLB, let's see how you view the integrity of the game. e already know you looked the other way when steroids and the HR ball captured the imagination of fans and filled stadiums!
Wonder what the national or even local reaction would be if this was Francisco Lindor’s Puerto Rican interpreter doing this in the Dominican? Or the very outspoken Max Scherzer instead of the Golden Boy Ohtani?

I have to admit he seemed pretty genuine there. He did a good job with that briefing and I totally wasn’t expecting that much detail from him.
Agree completely...never thought he'd say that much today. His story certainly makes sense while we wait for the facts to come out.

attending that press conference because if he ignored a pointed question he'd be accused of hiding something and if he answered a pointed question the wrong way the guilty finger might be pointed at him for that mistake.
Waiting to hear if the unnamed Ohtani spokesperson's name , the one who set up the ESPN interview where Mizuhara claimed Ohtani knew about his gambling debt and had paid it off but never placed a bet himself ,only to disavow that statement the next week after Ohtani's lawyers got involved and the claim was Ohtani never knew about the gambling dept, sure as hell didn't pay it for the interpreter and never placed a bet with that bookie.
You would think ESPN would come forward with the name , unless ESPN doesn't want to admit being duped by an imposter or under threat of legal action if they do

I watched parts of the press conference today and it occurred to me how hard it is to tell if someone is genuine if I don't understand what they're saying.

Betting is legal for the players now as long as they don't bet on baseball and Pete Rose claims he never bet on baseball and ,to my knowledge, MLB never proved he did.

He is a HOF for sure but when he agreed to a lifetime ban...unless he can prove it was under duress, he takes a lifetime ban.
Going to say this- All the sports need to throw their entire take on gambling out the window- they profit on gambling on their own sports. This has become worse that drugs on our society and you expect the athletes to be above it all?

It’s one of many rules that need to be followed to protect the sport. It’s like saying that if a league makes $ from beer commercials, then they can’t stop player from showing up drunk for games.
There are many who plea dealed to long prison terms....... for dealing weed.
So, legalize sports gambling but keep Rose in jail for it. Not making much sense from a justice POV.

How many here have their best friends (or interpreters) have access to their financial accounts?
How many here gets a text message when they legitimately buy a gallon of milk from Acme, let alone a notification that millions of your money have been taken out of your account?

I am going to go out on a limb that Ohtani has a team of lawyers and money people watching over his affairs. I would find it near impossible that an interpreter had access to an account that was holding 4.5 mil. Also- keeping in mind- while he has made good money so far- not so much that 4.5 could be hidden.
Multi-millionaires (especially those in their 20s) likely live a lot differently than you or I. I doubt that Ohtani is logging onto PNC every day to make sure he wasn't double-charged at Wawa. It sounds like the interpreter played many roles for him, and if he was involved in his finances, he could be the one getting the alerts that large sums were transferred.
I have no opinion of Ohtani positively or negatively, so it wouldn't matter who this was for me...I just know that many rich, young athletes have been swindled by those close to them over the years, and it's certainly plausible that it happened again in this instance.
As @Erial_Lion says, athletes have been swindled -- Joe Louis spent his last days as a greeter for a casino because his advisors had robbed him of every cent. So have other celebrities - it's plausible enough to have been the premise for the late 1980s hit TV series Moonlighting. (You remember -- it was the one with Cybill Shepherd and Bruce Willis.) It's pretty easy to see how it could have happened in this case. Ohtani obviously knows little English,and the interpreter was not only his contact with the English-speaking world but also a close friend. It's very possible that every communication from Ohtani's English language advisors or any financial institution went through the interpreter.

That’s why there are so many athletes that go bankrupt. I do my own wire transfers but do multi millionaires, who don’t speak English, make their own wire transfer? I wouldn’t trust anyone but I guess I would trust my relative or ?

why are so many people mentioning lack of english- a little birdie told me that they do wire transfers in the language you select. If you are Japanese and do not speak English- well, your transfer will be done in....wait for it -Japanese!

you know what is funny- in the NFL- they bring all the rookies into a "classroom" and have a financial advisor meet with them. And they make a very strong recommendation to the players to not allow family anywhere near their money.
In a lot of cases, great advice. But I remember our son coming home and telling his Mom that he was told that she can't handle his finances.
This is a woman who is a mortgage advisor in 15 states, and even when she received child support for his care, she banked every $ to give to him and worked with him in HS and College to qualify for a AMX platinum card and mortgage the day he walked out of school.
Her response- "I don't think they meant you" ...
I've never tried doing a wire transfer in a different language, so I have no idea how equipped my local branch would be to work with me if I'm trying to send a domestic wire transfer and have no ability to read English. Bravo to the bank if they're able to handle everything in Japanese and I need no knowledge of English to complete it.
If doing it online- all banks have the option..,
If doing it in person- his Interpreter would absolutely need POA. For a transfer of these sizes, I’m not sure they would allow someone that is an added user.
Western Union also has the multi language option.
