Which team gets the 12th CFP slot?
SMU or Alabama?

I believe SMU (11-2) deserves the pick over Alabama (9-3) because they made it to their Conference championship game.
If ESPN gets to vote, Alabama is the 12th pick.

My belief: Conference Championship teams with similar overall records should outweigh teams that didn't make it to their Conference Championship game.
Every player wants outcomes to be decide on the field!

If the conferences want to maximize money, they need to give value to conference championship games but Alabama has a better resume.

This is a really interesting question. I like SMU as an underdog story but I want the best teams in the playoff. SMU beat no one. They lost their conf championship game. When your schedule is weak the conf championship game should be a data point. IMHO you are not penalizing a team for playing in the game, you are penalizing them for a crappy schedule.

I actually think it's Indiana. I've got Clemson 10, SMU 11, Indiana 12.

Can't be that simple.
I was just told that Army and their superior record and winning a conference championship should be nowhere near the CFP.

The problem is CFB Fans don't want outcomes the be decided on the field.

Some conferences are just stronger and deeper than others. Getting to the conf championship game shouldn’t be enough. I think it’s clear Alabama has a better resume.

SMU's OOC wasn't half bad. They played two P4's, including #17 BYU. Their conference schedule was weak, as they did not play Miami and the ACC was down this year. But that's not their fault.

Doesn't say much for the BIG if you've got a 1 loss team from it as the 12. And yes their schedule in conference was favorable but they blew out a ton of teams.
I could just as easily go Indiana 10, Clemson 11, SMU 12. Or Clemson 10, Indiana 11, SMU 12. But 10 is Indiana's ceiling.

They lost to BYU. Bama was 3-1 vs. top 25. SMU no wins against them.

SMU looks like the better team based on watching them last night. I watched Alabama against Oklahoma, Jalen Milroe is so overrated. Lose the name on the jersey, if we were talking about any other SEC team with the same resume, say it was SCar or Missouri with the same losses to Vandy and 24-3 to 5-6 OU, it’s no contest.

For the record, I don't think IU with their schedule is deserving either. They played no P4 teams ooc.

They could have survived one of those but not both. Vandy was a big underdog and OU could barely muster an offense and capable qb most of the season and they beat them by 21.

Who deserves to be in - Alabama

Who will get in - SMU.

Committee chairperson I believe said idle teams cannot pass teams playing in conference champ game

SMU did not pass an eye test for me yesterday.

Furthermore SMU will get in because there’s too much money to be made with conf champ games. If SMU is knocked out - conferences may want to eliminate champ games. !

Modification to be made : Rank conf champs like Boise and Az State correctly and don’t jump them to be teams with byes.

Skews bracket giving advantages to certain teams and vice versa !

Pros SMU - 11-2 with 65 yard FG to loss at buzzer by 3 in conf champ, other loss by three. Bama 3 losses one bad to OU, Mercer on schedule, only one three loss team in but due to Conf Champ.
Pros Bama - Beat SEC champ Georgia along with Missouri and LSU, three good SEC teams will already be left out - SC, Ole Miss and Missouri. Would be favored against SMU.

Most predictions have SMU. Bama has gotten favored status in the past. I'd like SMU just to have different teams get in now and again. If things go like below predicted by NBC, three things stand out to me - 1) not much difference in first round to be 5 - 7 as 10 - 12 similar, 2) OSU and Tenn will probably be the two best teams to play that weekend and are against each other, 3) It is a big deal to try and win the 5 or 6 seed game to avoid Ore and Georgia in second round. My prediction - OSU over Georgia in final.
  1. Oregon (Big Ten champion)
  2. Georgia (SEC champion)
  3. Boise State (Mountain West champion)
  4. Arizona State (Big 12 champion)
  5. Penn State
  6. Notre Dame
  7. Texas
  8. Ohio State
  9. Tennessee
  10. Indiana
  11. Clemson (ACC champion)
  12. SMU

It would be nice if the 2nd round was at home too. Going up to Boise or ASU or wherever might not be a walk in the park. Don't expect that though because they want the bowls involved.

This 5 seed being a potential easier path than the 1 seed became a problem because of realignment. The best teams in the B12 and PAC were taken away so those conferences got hurt and made those 3-4 seeds weaker than they may have been before realignment. The best teams were spread out a little more between conferences and that affects those seedings.

Watching ESPN guys like Saban whining... it is the SEC's fault.. this format. And everyone wanted that 5-slot and the SEC got it.

The SEC said NO to an 8 or 16-team playoff with no byes. They wanted byes for their champion.. an easier path to the title game.

So the other conferences said, okay, 12 teams with top 4 conference champions getting a bye.

The SEC made this abomination... and now they whine about it.

Turn this into a 16-team playoff with no byes and everyone being discussed would be in there and have a shot.

And the conference title games would have meaning within the conference but not in the overall CFP picture.

And the other bowls could have chosen their teams by now.

All the benefits of a no-byes 16-team playoff were turned down by the SEC to give their champion an easier path to the title game. They and their business partners at ESPN need to stop whining about it.
