Hi, I know most people use propane grills for tailgating... they're quick and you can eat within minutes. For those that use wood or charcoal, I was wondering if there's any demand for wood cut into smaller pieces for grilling. I recently had to cut down a bunch of hardwood trees and am wondering what I can do with them other than giving them away.

Home Depot and Lowe's sell various hardwoods (hickory, mesquite, pecan, cherry, apple) in chunks. It comes in 8 lb bags. I use them all the time.

You could make drum sticks. Or drums. Or a small boat.

I myself frequently have wood but don't often post about it.

Oak is "meh" for cooking.

Maple, on the other hand, has real value. There's a shortage of maple charcoal right now, which is used in the initial filtration process of raw grain-based spirits (whiskey / bourbon).

Both can be used for smoking. Use Oak for smoking something that requires a long cook like brisket, Maple for something that could use sweeter flavors like pork/ham. If you want to get rid of them I'm sure people will take it.

Better not post this on the Texas board, Hoss...

Lol. Oak couldn't be any more valuable for cooking. Assuming its seasoned, it burns clean imparts a good, yet not overpowering flavor and doesn't flare up like a lot of other woods do.

If you're looking to get rid of some oak, let me know. I already have more than I'll use in the next year, but I can always take more.

Thanks all, for the advice and funny replies. If anyone wants wood for tailgates next fall, I'l have some available. Morning wood will be available for noon kickoffs!

Hey, if you're up in north Jersey and looking to get rid of any, I'm finally exhausting everything I cut from the trees that were downed by Sandy. I've started stocking some to split next summer, but still need a bunch more. And I've got 2 budding scouts who love to saw and split wood.

Buffalo chips impart a distinctive flavor that will have them crying for more.Or perhaps just crying.

Then you better not wake up at or before 8:00am or else you'll have to call a doctor.
