Weak tournament this time around.

Actually, this might be an incredibly exciting tournament. With several traditional powerhouses out (Italy, Netherlands, etc.) it allowed for more balance between each group with a weaker team in nearly every group. This means the odds are much greater than the best teams will advance - something that doesn't always have.

In other words, a weaker opening round will likely mean great knockout rounds from the get go.

The way the FIFA rankings are calculated is a bit bogus. All friendlies count no matter what roster is thrown onto the pitch. Also, going back several years raises similar roster questions.
