Grew up 15 min south of Philly and was 12 years old when the Flyers won their first cup in 74 and I was a huge hockey fan. Used to play pick-up street hockey (not cold enough for ice, usually) all the time and we had local teams who played each other in the neighborhood without and parents involved. Of course we all loved the Flyers and I went to the first parade after winning the Cup - think there was over 2 million fans there (Philly hadn't won anything in years).
Loved Clarke, who was brutal, but very talented, and enjoyed the Bullies, especially Moose DuPont, but my favorite player was the fluid Rick MacLeish, who had one of the most amazing wrist shots ever in the NHL (I would work on my wrist shot for hours and it was pretty decent). While I loved those teams, looking back, yeah, I think the NHL erred in allowing that kind of brutality - I much prefer watching what a beautifully fast and skilled game hockey can be.
