Looking for basketball leagues, clinics, camps for my son, 3rd grade. He’s currently playing rec in town but wants more. PAL and CYO don’t begin until next year.

I’m in Cranford, so anywhere in the surrounding Union county area.

Thanks

Hoop Heaven is a good place for private leagues and instruction. Whippany may be far for you, but my son had a good experience there.

Find a local middle school or high school gym you could find open space for dribbling and shooting drills on his own when it’s too cold for practicing in a park or driveway. Work on conditioning too. Organized training can wait another year.

Get a hoop for your driveway (that you can adjust the height). Almost as important as instruction. With any luck he'll spend more time outside than playing video games

Agreed, that's a great way to get better. We have a hoop and have a great time time shooting and passing and dribbling and playing one on one, two on one. He's working on his skills without even realizing it because it's just shooting hoops.

What's he's looking for is more running the floor with a team, 5 on 5, getting open, shaking a defender, the kind of real game stuff you can only get in a league (or clinic w/ scrimmages).

Too cold to practice? We're out there in winter coats because it beats sitting inside hahah.

Maybe try this one. Rutgers grad running the show, good guy who knows the game.

When my kids were younger they all went to Hoops America. https://ushoops.com/
This group has been around since the late 80;s so they must be doing something right. THey concentrate on skill development and then 1/2 court scrimmages at the end of the session.

The other one I know of (a few kids from the High School team I am involved with have gone here ) is in Raritan Center. The name is the Basketball Warehouse.

Bobby and his brother Mark are great coaches and great people.

Highly recommend his place for youth workouts

As another FYI. Geoff Billet runs a great summer camp at CBA. Just 30 minutes down the GSP from Cranford. My son attended for multiple years and loved it.

I second Bobby and Mark. Played with Bobby and coached Mark at camps in high school and college. Really good guys and run a sound fundamental operation. Not a big fan of Flaherty or Leach at US Hoops. Something always seemed off with those 2.

Good to know. My son is a big RU hoops fan so he'll get a kick out of a Billet camp. Thanks

Is bball warehouse still open? Schedule info listed on the site looks like 2018-2020. Location is doable.

Their last workouts of the year were last week. They’re scheduled to start up again in January. Most weeks they have workouts Tuesday and Thursday nights for about 45 minutes. Only $10 a workout so a great value. Bobby is a good guy - always positive and encouraging with the kids.

Ended up signing him up for a rec league at the Y in Westfield. Figured there’s plenty of time in the future for serious training, now is the time to just run the floor a lot and get game experience.

Best part about Basketball Warehouse is you drop in whenever schedule works for you , he's always there Tuesdays and Thursdays. Mark will be there more often in Jan/Feb with Bobby coaching, but he's great also with the kids. Good fundamentals with a quick circuit workout at the end.

After two weeks coaching 3/4 I agree on conditioning. These little minecraft freaks are sucking wind after two possessions of a scrimmage.
hahah I saw you in the other thread. I agree, I have a team of 3rd and 4th graders and they're spent after 60m of practice. In my day we'd play rec hoops in morning, travel hoops in the afternoon then have enough gas left to run around on the street until the street lights went on.

Here are a couple more:

Express Hoops in Edison - heard good things about them and the asst. coach for St. Joes runs the program.

Woodbridge Wizards - AAU program. My son did a few of their practice session programs and I liked them. Colonia HS basketball head coach did one of the practice session programs and I was really impressed with him (not sure how involved he is on the whole though).

I would still check out Hoops America, which Phlop recommended. Right in South Plainfield.

One of Rich Leary's (US Hoops) coaches was arrested for something inappropriate with one of the girls year or so ago. Easy to find online.

Agree on Hoops America. My sons went there in elementary school and it gave them a good foundation on fundamentals; dribbling, ball handling, etc.

Doesn't surprise me. As I said earlier "Something always seemed off with those 2." Leary was always creepy and Flaherty is outright dangerous.

KU33 next time you talk to Bobby T ask him about Tom F. I think you will be surprised at how highly he thinks of him.

I know Bobby likes flaherty I have discussed this with him and his father many times over the years. I am not debating toms basketball knowledge. It’s his approach and general demeanor.it is not normal for a grown man to challenge teen agers to fights. It is not normal for a man and his brothers to intimidate people from playing on a basketball court “because they own Roosevelt park.” If he was not protected in his small circle in metuchen/Edison he and his brothers would be in jail.

Didn't Flaherty get removed as assistant coach when his daughter was in HS?

Flaherty’s daughter is the all time leading point scorer at Uof Michigan.
I know the family history well. Not sure how that has anything to do with his character. And if you know anything about him you know I wasn’t talking about him coaching his daughter. The guy was an absolute maniac when he coached Perth amboy tech.

The OP is asking for input on clinics and camps for his son’s basketball development, not a team coach. Individual player development is more the issue here. In terms of basic skills training my kids had a good experience at Hoops America. They never worked directly with Flaherty but he obviously gets results.
