I had dinner last night with my brother-in-law who was a safety/special teams player at Iowa State when Coach Ash was there...so not only were they there at the same time, but he was his position coach. The most obvious caveat to any of his comments would be that they were at Iowa State around 10 years ago, so presumably Coach Ash has changed/grown/learned/developed quite a bit over that time frame having worked with Bret Bielema at Wisconsin and Arkansas and Urban Meyer at Ohio State.
All that said, and despite the challenges inherent in playing in our division, he does think that he can be a very successful coach at this level. He highlights a very smart football mind, detail-oriented, and the fact that Coach Ash, despite being a yeller, was good to his players.
If he were an a-hole or not very good, I think my brother-in-law would have said so as well.
Considering others were at dinner and less interested in Rutgers football, I didn't go too deep into the subject, but he was positive on the hire and had a favorable impression of him.
