The episode is for all the old folks like me.

Sellers is the GOAT and he talks about his years at Rutgers, being recruited by Dickie V, The Barn, MSG and the Final Four.

Danny and I also preview Notre Dame.

Enjoy,

Jon

Phil is still the best Rutgers basketball player I've ever seen.
I cannot believe this interview got by me! Thank you Dan and Jon. I could not have said it any better than Kbee3 and Jon above!! To me, Phil will always be the GOAT at Rutgers because he left behind a legacy that managed to allow Rutgers sports to survive for 40 years...before some competency finally arrived within the Rutgers Administration and Athletic Dept. Talk about long coattails! Phil arrived in 1972 as a HS All-American/ Dapper Dan All-Star MVP and it/he offered Rutgers an opportunity to be placed in a perfect position to take advantage of the blowing up of the popularity of eastern basketball. Things didn't work out, obviously, but the success that started in 1972-1976 carried the school for years. Rutgers could at least stay in the conversations of big time athletics, but most of the time we held on by a thread. We got lucky, finally, with the Big Ten invite. But back to Phil...when I arrived at Rutgers as a freshman in 1972, Rutgers was a nice eastern program with virtually no national reputation (Bob Lloyd, Jim Valvano, Rutgers vs. Southern Illinois in NIT). The first time I went to see the Rutgers basketball team was the final regular season game against Penn State in 1973. The Barn was NUTS. The first time I saw Phil go up for a rebound and a put back, I just looked at my friend and said, "that is a different player than everybody else out on the floor!". You could just SEE the talent difference. and, Rutgers had some decent players like Gene Armstead and John Somogyi that year, but Phil was on a totally different level...as a freshman. We blew out Penn State, The cheerleaders ran out and laid down on the floor, spelling out N-I-T. The place exploded...I was hooked!! That Penn State game and the A-10 Championship vs. Penn State are still the two most electric sports events I've ever seen!! Phil had so many great games against big schools (Southern Cal, Pitt, Louisville, etc.) it was amazing. Thanks for listening to my rant. Thanks again Dan and Jon. Thanks, Phil!! GO RU!
