Pike: “Grant had his two best practices”

Even if true, how bad has he practiced that he wouldn't see significant playing time until tonight? Especially when comparing his results with other players already in the rotation.

Practice play is only relevant to a point. If martini is an amazing practice player, that doesn't give him the right to go out and contribute nothing game after game and play over Grant even if he is out playing him in practice

Practice performance means zilch. Today second half warmups we hit at one point 10 or 12 straight 3s including the walkons. Then in game speed even wide open, it was brick by brick

WTF?

He's the only player that looks like that. That alone should have the staff trying to get him ready, develop him, make sure he knows what we need from him.

45% into the season and he had 2 good practices?

With Martini being invisible in the box score for a number of games and a minus defender, there needs to be a congressional inquiry.

The only thing that could make sense is that Grant had a bad attitude (not saying he did).

Something stinks.

You might recall that early before the season , I posted I was lucky enough to be invited to 2 practices. I posted after the 2 practices that Dylan Grant is going to play and help us. They practiced against a zone and ACE would be doubled and Dylan Grant was smart enough to run the baseline and ACE found him 2-3 times in the dunking spot. He also hustled throughout practice and had good size and length so his defense was good. He really didn’t shoot a lot of threes like he likes doing in games but they drill that at the end of each practice.

Pike has made a terrible mistake naming Martini a captain and that has clouded his judgment in playing Martini over Grant. Martini gives you nothing if he is not hitting threes , which he isn’t anymore , no rebounds , no defense , no stopping or help defense when guards are driving uncontested into the lane. Really been a zero. Grant has been athletic and better since Day 1 and shameful that Pike threw him into Texas A&M game and tonite against Wisconsin without building him into rotation since Day 1 , which probably would have yielded much more production by Game 15 today.

Yea, it's was really inexcusable that Pike didn't even find him any real minutes against the cupcakes

If you give Martini's 19 min to Grant, I bet we beat Kennesaw state. We needed more athleticism

Grant and Dortch should both be playing because he will need them both to start next year, and not hit the portal
Exactly! How about getting some guys experience for next year as well and helping them develop. Should have been done in OOC games yet here we are
Also Pike has to learn that EVERYONE is a one and done player in this NIL age not just your superstar NBA players. They all need to be re-recruited or leave for greener pastures(aka Lathan)

Are captains selected through player vote, or just designated by the coach? I seem to remember in years past captains were chosen by their teams

I do not think the players voted for these captains, but if they did , it was a pure deferral to the older seniors or grad transfers. These captains seem like they were Pike selected. Huge fail again.

It was Pike’s stock answer. It’s just what he says. The reality seems to have been the house was on fire and he was desperate. Meantime, the kid hears that answer and thinks “wtf?”

Grant should get 100% of Martini’s minutes on potential alone! I get starting Martini for the first 5 to 10 games to see what he could provide as a 5th year senior on a young team, but once you saw that he is an absolute zero it was coaching malpractice not to go to Grant or someone else sooner.

I've been as big a Pike supporter as any, but as soon as I heard "Grant had his two best practices" I had to turn it off to keep from breaking my computer. Same shit different day at this point.

As I said earlier from watching practice , Grant was this type of player from Day 1. Very impressive in the 2 early practices I saw. My summary is Pike named Martini as Captain for his experience and had to play his captain and that is the huge fail because he is nothing close to a Captain. No one knew he would be an absolute zero across the board , rebounding , defense or making shots.
Now the only good news I heard in the Pike post game press conference was that he committed that going forward Acuff and Grant will be a big part of the rotation. Hopefully that means Martini is eliminated from the rotation.

Almost surely too late though. The damage has been done.

Even in Texas A&M game you could see Grant had length and athleticism on defense…he looked raw offensively, but you could see there was something there.

It’s absurd that the leashes of guys like Martini and Hayes have been so long and Grant never got a real chance again until last night.

You could even see the team feeding off his energy on and off the court last night.

The guy was aggressive with n the glass and protecting the rim. I liked it.
I also want to see Dortch out there now…looks extremely athletic also. I get the feeling he lacks shooting ability.

That said, if these are worse in practice then any of the players not named ace or Dylan someone we have issues

it’s beyond coaching malpractice to not have played grant much at this point in the season. all sp had to do was read this board as several of us have been asking to see more of him since vegas where i thought he held his own. he didn’t score but had several shots that unluckily rolled off the rim against a&m.
pike has some explaining to do or maybe he is just not a very good coach for missing on martini and not playing this kid. usually the simplest most obvious answer is the correct one.

This is the sensible take. The theory of martini being a senior leader glue guy who could not down shots was decent but the reality was clearly not there and Pike waited wayyyy too long to give Grant a serious look

If I was Pike, even if I didn't think Grant was ready, I would have went to him earlier to send a message and at least see if he hustled and played with energy and passion

If Dortch can't shoot but plays D and busts his butt I'd rather see it then the effort we have seen in the majority of games from these role players

Dortch was much more raw but his height and length is undeniable. He has a very awkward shot where ball is placed in front of him and then shot upward. Doubt he will have the time to get it off in a game. Plus his accuracy was not very good as he shot airballs more often than makes. I see why he has not played but Grant not playing from Day 1 is a huge miscalculation from Pike.

I don’t even think a team should have any captains unless it is deserved. From the looks of this team, there should not be a single captain right now.

OT but the NFL "captain" situation is ridiculous.
Teams have like 10 captains.

And now 1st year rookie QBs are named captain before the season even starts.

Unless they go to teams with established QBs, both Sanders and Ward and near guaranteed to be voted team captains come September.
