Pikiell Quotes for NJ Coaches Clinic

This is great to hear. I hope Coach Pikiell was talking to Phil Colicchio about his sophomore star, Tavon Jones. I have felt for years that Phil just might be the best coach in NJ. Year in and year out Linden is among the Top 5-10 team in the state. For the last 3 years Linden has been selected the top public school in the state. Their defense is outstanding and their players relentless.

I really like Phil C......best coach in the state of NJ for a long time now....(yes even better than Hurley)
Hurley remains the best coach because he continues to win the Tournament of Champions and he defeats Linden and Roselle Catholic.

"For the first time in awhile I'm really, really excited about Rutgers."

A very telling quote from one of the top HS coaches in NJ.

But hopefully a very good sign for long suffering RU fans.

I'm glad to see that Phil Colicchio said he is looking forward to seeing Steve Pikiell recruit his soph, Tavon Jones as well as other Linden players in the future. I have been saying since January that RU needed to get in on Tavon. St. Joe's offered him about 2 months ago and he is currently a 6'2" guard who might still be growing and just made 2nd team All State in the Ledger putting him in the #6- #10 best player in NJ and he is only a soph. We need to get a couple of Jersey kids every year. I am happy to see how active the new RU coaches are in their recruiting efforts. We are finally showing that we mean business. With Hobbs being in Pennsylvania today and Young coming on board we are making some real progress.

I attended the clinic today and enjoyed it thoroughly. With an all star line up of coaches, I came away most impressed with Pikiiells time. Okay, I am biased as an RU alum and fan, but he really did a nice job engaging the coaches. Very likeable down to earth guy. He stressed coaches to visit his practices at Rutgers any time. He said there no throw away years, and he will figure out how to win year one with whatever roster they have. Defense will be stressed big time....simple things like being in a defensive stance all game, as the game is played high to low, or shoulder to shoulder as Pikiell said...nice to hear after the past three years of no defense. also said something interesting in regards to RU games being so heavily attended by NBA scouts in past years, given RU location, he shared this with his team, but then broke the bad news to them that they were there to see the opponents players...said he told them it's his job to get them to come see them, but hey that's a chip in the recruiting box..

Colicchio is best coach is state, does not have a kid from manalapan playing for him.

This is like saying Mike Krzyzewski is the best coach. Kind of hard not to win when you have 2-3 of the top 25 kids in the nation dropped in your lap every year. They get credit for building the program to get those kids but doesn't mean Hurley or Krzyzewski is the best coach.

Or Auriemma on the women's side.

That said, Hurley has being doing this for a very long time. I remember how tough they were years ago against my CBA.

Pikiell seems to be hitting all the right notes so far. But this is the easy part. Lots of heavy lifting to be done.

Did he cover any X&O's stuff or was it all a program philosophy/get to know the new regimne talk?

FYI that's wrong 3 years ago I was #1 in the state 90% of the season and went to the TOC final. Last year they got beat in the states and this year we lost an OT thriller at Linden. Phil is a great guy, but not close to Hurley. St. Ant's runs so many sets on the HS level is crazy. Linden still runs a flex offense.

You might be right but in 2013-14 LHS was Group IV State Champs and Newark East Side was Group III State Champs. Both teams lost to St. Joe's of Metuchen in the TOC. Your team lost 49-47 in the finals and LHS lost 63-59 in the semis in a game that was tied with 50 seconds left. I would say both teams were quite even but your team did make the finals. Last year LHS was upset by Paterson East Side in the semis of Group IV but were still selected by the Star Ledger as the top public school in the state at the end of the season. Say what you want about Hurley, he is a great coach but he has more talent and more height than Linden does every year. He gets kids from all over to play for him. Public schools cannot do that.
