Pinstripe bowl tailgate

Pretty silly argument to be having aa bowl games/espn don't really care about attendance. It's all about TV money

Actually I saw some people wearing Indiana sweatshirts on the NJ turnpike service area yesterday. Probably be more fans than expected, been a long time since Indiana has been to a bowl game and NYC is a nice destination for people not living in this area.

Turn on ABC Channel 7.
The place is empty.
I revise my estimate to 15,000 fans.

B1G schools really don't want a cold weather bowl. Refs slipping on turf. Sadly comical.

Empty, yet, more fans that at games in Miami Beach, The Bahamas, St. Pete, or, FWIW, Boise. Again, nobody was expecting ANY kind of big crowd here today, don't get me wrong, but your incessant bashing of a game that has been majorly successful, through it's 1st 5 years, is silly and, IMHO, based on your hatred for the Steinbrenner family and what they've done with ticket prices at Yankee Stadium lol (which I GET trust me!!!).

Just enjoy the game my man! [thumb2]

A 6-6 B1G school, who became bowl eligible the last week of the season, is playing in this game. They haven't been to a bowl since 2007. I'm sure they're more than happy to be in The Bronx today. RU and Penn State fans have shown up in large #'s just like Wisconsin, OSU, MSU, Michigan, Iowa, and Maryland fans would should they ever land here. Yes, I know, OSU will likely never get sent here, but don't be surprised WHEN a 6-6 Michigan, Iowa, Wisconsin, MSU, or Nebraska, gets sent there. Everyone saw the #'s these schools brought (and Iowa will bring) to Piscataway.

NO - it' NOT ideal - we all agree on that but, the bottom line, once again, is that a game a handful of you STILL think is going to fail:

- hasn't
- has done the complete opposite, thus far
- and won't

...fail. No matter how much a few guys here want to bash it and pray, daily, for it to fail. It actually has blown away MOST, if not all, of the games "created" since it's inception (with, maybe, The Foster Farms Bowl being the only exception...they should have a GREAT crowd tonight I'd guess...) and probably has surpassed a few created before it, as well, like it or not.

I

I don't know why people keep mocking this bowl. It gives fans who can't afford a "destination" bowl to go see Rutgers. The B1G isn't sending us there every year. And lastly we go to this when we are like 7-5 and would take any bowl. I would be mad if we would be there at like 10-2 or we go every year but neither is going to happen. If you don't like the cold then move to Florida.

You are way off base here. True I am not happy about the Steinbrenners and their ripping off the Average baseball fan. However I would have the same feelings if the game was I n CitiField.
This is not a Bowl destination. NYC in late December in a Baseball stadium is not a Bowl game.
Have you seen the Ticket prices for this Bowl ? Outrageous at $150 + fees for a sideline seat.
You reference other Bowl venues with smaller crowds . That's fine for them....they are not paying millions per team for this Bowl appearance like the Yankees are.

FWIW - the Bahamas Bowl and Boca Raton Bowls payout is $400k per team. The Pimp$tripe Bowl payout is $2 million per team.

Who controls the ticket prices for this game?

Los Jankees

It's a great tailgating scene on the rooftop of the 161 St parking lot. Watching a game of mid level bowl teams in baseball stadium not so good, but hey, you can't always get what you want.

Hey maybe there shouldn't be a bowl game in El Paso, Texas, 2nd straight time it's snowed when Miami has played there!!! God-forbid!!!

And if RU was playing in the Pinstripe Bowl today , most of us within a 100 miles of Yankee Stadium would be there today having a great time.

Next new Bowl should be in Negril , Jamaica

Pinstripe bowl is a success and here to stay. Has major title sponsor, Yankee backing, 2 P5 conferences - both w multiple local schools capable of providing travelling fans most years, hx of exciting games w big crowds, great NYC angle (see commercials re times square, stock exchange). Just embrace it.

How do you know it is a success ?
Only one sellout ( RU vs. Notre Dame) in 5 years.
Horrible Bowl atmosphere .... Hard pressed that the Yankees broke even this year after paying $4 mil to the 2 Bowl teams and the costs of opening the stadium for one day and only drawing 20,000 fans today.

Go Hoosiers!!! I'd love to see the B1G go 10-1 in the bowls this year.

Oh my god, the people defending this bowl are hilarious!

Finished with a made field goal called a miss. What a joke.

Looks ok on TV. Better than RU vs UNC
Good game too .. 41-41 with 5 seconds to go

Crowd was a joke. The Upper Deck was totally closed .....basically half the Stadium.
20,000 or so is nothing to be proud of.

Reviews of FGs is needed and must be added. How about the view on zoom from the other Endzone ?

Boxscores are listing 37K and some change as the official attendance.

This has arguably been the most exciting bowl game each of the last 2 seasons.

The $2 million payout per team makes this bowl worth keeping. Teams don't lose money by going to this game. The bowls set up for the convenience of ESPiN have payouts like $400,000 as was noted above, and the schools will almost always lose money when they go there. Some years back, there was a requirement that bowls pay a minimum of $750K per team but somewhere along the line, that was scrapped and the evil empire most likely had something to do with that.

This bowl has matched BCS/P5 teams since its inception and offered far better matchups than most of the other minor bowls. The only reason some people here hate it is because it is just a local game for us but as others noted, it has allowed many RU fans to attend a bowl game who are otherwise unable to afford to travel to a more distant game.

Finally, another feather in the cap of this game is that it actually has its own name, which is allowing it to build an identity for itself. That's a lot different than the Whatever Bowl RU played in last year or Whichever Brand Bowl we played in in Orlando in 2012. Those and so many other bowls have lost their identities, if they ever had them to begin with.

but an eagerly awaited number of higher importance, at least to the baseball team that runs the show, was announced in the second quarter: 37,218.That was the attendance figure for a football game on a sodded-over diamond between two universities far better known for basketball. It was far smaller than the record 49,012 at last year’s game between Penn State and Boston College, but the Yankees expected that.

The lower-profile bowl games like the Pinstripe Bowl have proved to be a hard sell: In the 12 bowl games played entering Saturday, only three drew more than 30,000, with the Bahamas Bowl between Western Michigan and Middle Tennessee luring a scant 13,123.

Before Saturday, only five of the 11 bowl games that returned from the 2014 slate drew better crowds. The Las Vegas Bowl, which pitted two nearby rivals, Utah and Brigham Young, had a crowd of 42,213, better than the 33,067 who saw Utah play Colorado State in 2014.

The Yankees appeared to be in a fix because Rutgers and Boston College had losing records this year, and Connecticut, an American Athletic Association team, was not under consideration because the bowl is contractually obligated to the Big Ten and Atlantic Coast Conference. The 2013 Pinstripe Bowl, won by Notre Dame over Rutgers, drew 47,122.

I personally hate the idea of this bowl but wow...you guys are crazy. This is not the peace, orange, fiesta etc...it compares to the type of bowls we usually go to and the crowd is/was on pare with most of those games.
The reason I would have hated it as a player parent/family- would 100% to be about the days leading up to the bowl, not the game itself

the reason for the hate is that we will get sent there every time they possibly have the excuse to send us..... If the bowl cannot be killed I would hope that the big 10 does us a favor and let some other league have it.

Between all the money made on advertising, tv money, sponsorships, etc--the money from ticket sales isn't as important as most think in order to be "successful" as a bowl.

The attendance wasn't great but it wasn't terrible by any means either. Attendance is usually decent for the game and part of that is likely because of the game being played on a Saturday each year which makes it easier to travel to. Obviously with the Saturday being the day after Christmas, not many people were going to be able to go 1,000 miles away to see their school in a bowl game--as we all know from our game last year.

the bowl is a success...its a better location that being sent to Detroit or Dallas against even lesser opponents where no fans will go. Last year we could have been sent there but didn't so we will only go once every 4 years or so. Win 9, 10 games and we wont worry about going there.

For schools other than Rutgers NYC is an attraction. It might be better to play on a a couple if days either before or after Christmas..the 23rd or 27th might be better. Any game on the 24-26 will potentially have poor attendance unless except for a local school like Rutgers, Maryland or BC where it can be a day trip. Equally important is the field condition. It is a damn shame to see players slipping on recently installed sod and also dangerous in terms of potential injuries.

A more perfect situation for a NYC area game is the Meadowlands but that would probably negate the $$$ etc put in by the Yankees. As we know it's all about the money and the influence of ESPN and other media networks. Heck, playing at a location like Rutgers Sradium wouldn't be that bad either. Great field, excellent tailgates, close to NYC and Philadelphia. This would be similar to the some of the Fiesta Bowl games played on ASU campus.

But as Nuts points out overall the game has been a success despite what some local Rutgers fans think and was a boost for Rutgers. A solution....bring back the Garden State Bowl. Couldn't be any worse than the games in Boise, Santa Clara, St.Pete, Boca etc. To many schools the metro NYC area is an attraction and playing in a football stadium in NJ is better than Yankee Stadium with its bad turf and limited tailgating opportunities and traffic and parking logistics. Once again it appears the NJ is missing the boat on not trying to have a bowl game in the Meadowlands or even a preseason game.
