please change the quarterback

There is a defiant unwillingness to understand how hugely undertalented this team is compared to team's with top 5 talent. I'm not sure Oden will ever be a good QB. But I am sure it was a good idea not to put him in behind an OL that was being absolutely shredded and tossed all over the place yesterday.

It's not as if as the season wears on something magical happens and you can suddenly ignore the dearth of talent and just say out of sheer frustration that it's the new coaches. It ain't. When the frustration wells up, steal a line from James Carville: It's the talent stupid. And it will never not be this year. This is Flood's roster and you're seeing what he gradually did to the talent level of the program after being given a a four-year cycle to do it.

Joe Montana and Bill Walsh could've done little to change yesterday. Just be glad the games against top 5 teams are over.

I'm sorry but talent argument only goes so far. This was one of the worst losses in B1G history. Our worst shutout in over 100 years.

Plenty of gang of 5 teams with far less talent have faired better against top 10 teams than we did yesterday.

This offense looks like it is coached by a 28 year old. Oh wait, it is!

Even Michigan's entire 2nd string out schemed our 1st string.

Michigan's 2d team is more talented than our 1st team. Many players, probably most, on our 1st team wouldn't make Michigan'e team anywhere on the depth chart.

380 yards against Iowa. Do you think an Iowa team that we played evenly will lose that badly to UM on 11/12? I don't, which is why I'm a bit down on the staff right now. I have a hard time believing that we have that little talent (or that Grant made that much of a difference).

RU was never built to play B1G teams. B1G always had more power than other conferences. Now they've been adding speed and rival SEC teams. RU was never real big but now its slow to boot. Iowa at least is used to B1G power and can hold up better. When asked what would be first thing changed at RU Ash said the strength and conditioning facilities. He said they were way below B1G standards. Speed wise Grant was only real play maker on team and he's gone. RU's offense looks like it runs in slowed motion. Iowa will play UM better for some basic reasons. I also think Michigan wanted to beat stuffing out of RU for recruit reasons etc.

"Everybody thinks that the facility here is outstanding. I'll tell you: It's not," Ash said during a wide-ranging interview as the sun rose last Thursday. "Just look around. This is not on par with what Ohio State, Michigan, Michigan State and Penn State have.

"Is it on par with Boston College, Temple, Syracuse and UConn? Yeah, but we don't play those teams any more."

Nor right. But you should have learned along the way that promoting other players up the depth chart of this particular roster isn't going to make much of a difference. What's needed, instead, is a roster makeover, and that is going to take a few years, just like it took a full-cycle four years to get it to the depths it's at now.

I'd say swapping QB's was the right call. No it didn't have much impact on a game like this, but it may have an impact on future games.

I agreed with the move to change the qb to see if it would make a difference.....it didn't. You cannot fix what this staff has done. We cannot pass or run out of this offense. The oc is in way over his head. The defense is devoid of linebacker play and the safeties are banged up. I don't think this can be fixed at this point without some serious soul searching and changes being made by ash. If something isn,t changed, the season is lost totally

We should just run the wildcat with Hicks and Martin. Mich didn't bother to cover any of our WRs because they knew we couldn't complete a simple swing pass. They had 1 guy covering 3 WRs.

Ash inherited a team with no experienced LBs. Greg Jones got hurt and a freshman had to start. Like OL, the LB core is weak.

The worst year for RU football imo was 2010. Set a D1 record for sacks in a season. QB situation was traumatic. EL injury was a disaster. Years of poor OL recruiting created a line in 2010 that could not block for pass or run. As time went on, the guy in charge of that record setting disaster became head coach despite a resume that showed no promise at all - just the opposite - "bad move" was written all over Flood's CV. Now if opposing DL can't bowl over RU blockers they just run around or past them. Talk about stiff - RU blockers cant hardly move at all. Norv Turner couldn't do anything with this offense after years of digging a deep hole. As one late night radio preacher shouts "Hell creeps up on ya slowly!"

Or, how about this? The talent isn't there. Could it be possible that the real problem is the roster and not something fan's can dream up as fixes via promoting backups and changing the offense and play calling? Could it be that the talent has been on a steady decline all the way up to this full-Flood roster? Were there any signs of that? Could that be why RU is getting hammered by top 5 teams just a bit worse than the hammerings it experienced under Flood by top 25 teams previous to this? Hmm. Nope. Must be that the backups are better and that the coaches don't know how to play call like the fans. Solved.

Now that most fans finally agree that there is a lack of talent all we have to do is find the magic potion that will make Peppers type players want to come to Rutgers.

I think the staff kept Oden out of the Ohio State and Michigan games because they knew the disparity in talent, and didn't want his confidence to take a beating as well as his body. When the defense is in the face of your QB, a nano-second after the ball is hiked, your receivers have concrete for feet and stones for hands, Peyton Manning and Tom Brady in the prime of their pro careers wouldn't do much better

I saw the same yesterday, but came to a different conclusion - we have enough talent to play a decent game where we make at least 10 first downs and maybe a couple of scores against Michigan (before garbage time). I concluded that our team has just given up. It looks like there is no leadership by captains. No effective leadership by the coaches. This team is rudderless.

The talent will not come unless things change now and the coaching staff can show they know how to adapt and get the most out of the players they have. He will not fool any recruits in the off-season if this debacle continues. Ash needs to bootstrap up HIS program and it needs to change ASAP.

Well, where was the debacle against less talented teams like Iowa? Why does this unique giving up only happen against teams like Washington, OSU and Michigan, and even after Washington not against Iowa?

It's the talent, and debacles like this aren't likely to happen again because the part of the schedule against 3 top 5 teams is over.

When you give up 136 points and don't score any, it's hardly a resume builder for either coordinator or the head coach. I'll attribute the last two games to the disparity in talent, and having to play the cards you're dealt. To me, RU's season starts this Saturday. There aren't any games remaining that involve a playoff type foe. Unless the players have packed it in, I would expect competitive games, and I wouldn't be surprised to see Odin get playing time.

No one on this board, save for RutgersAl, will not dispute that we don't have the skill and depth to compete with the top teams. But, talent alone does not win games. There are few more ingredients like pride, effort, schemes (optimal use of abilities), motivation and plain old chance that can make a team play above its talent level.

My concern is we are not even making first downs. Or scoring an occasional field goal. Something is very wrong and it's not just talent.

People say Rettig does fit Mehringer's system. Mehringer's "system" of run first and second downs up the middle and right handed QBs rolling out to the left on third downs is a flawed system. Change the system. Play a QB who can throw the ball north south. Goal lines are not on the sidelines, Mehringer.

You are right. It is funny how much Mehringer's play calling mimics he who shall remain nameless play calling. Different scheme same results.

They have got to work and get ORLAR in the game asap.....

What is ORLAR you ask, well if they can somehow get all the qb's in a radiation lab and have the Incredible Hulk effect, ODEN, Rettig, Laviano, Allen, and Gino Rescigno can splice together and create one indestructable red giant that utilizes all the top attributes of each individual.

Then we can rule the world, er, uh, ..... or win the big ten east

What is the point this coaching staff is making...unreal...its about the future
Look it's obvious that Lavciano can't do it. But don't you think they'd throw Oden out there if they felt he was ready to play?
