Whatsup Everyone,
I'm Mike Keelen Game Day Operations Director for the Rutgers Riot Squad; the beating pulse of the Rutgers Student section. For us to coordinate what we would like to please help us spread the word on a few things.

1. Pound your chest during the Knight Pulse from start to finish, we need the entire stadium to do it to create the visual we have in mind on ABC prime time.

2. WE start the RU chant going out to the ENTIRE crowd, not just the section to the right of the student body. We need the entire stadium to get involved and send the chant back in our direction. We start it up after big plays and after every TD or XP.

3. Be Early and Be LOUD, get behind us and follow our lead as we push our Scarlet Knights to victory.

The Riot Squad sits in the first 5 rows to the right side of the band and we coordinate the rest of the student body. We have dedicated ourselves to creating a top of line game day atmosphere and what we do cannot be completed without your help.

Thanks in advance and GO KNIGHTS
-Mike Keelen

is there anyway you can let Mike know that they need to slow down the RU chant? It's waaaaay more effective if the student section allows the rest of the stadium to say UUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUU for a full few seconds, before jumping back with RRRRRRRR. And it kills the chant way too early

IMO, I think if we do that, the chant will be much more effective.

. Done

I will. And I agree totally! I keep reminding Athletics about this for years and will voice your concerns. The thread on Facebook has a number of similar comments and suggestions to get the chant back to the way it had been when it went across the field before the expansion.

Hopefully the students have worn themselves out with that chant aimed at that school from Pennsylvania - that would look and sound really, really bad on national TV.

Sadly, the person who goes out on the field to teach the R U cheer doesn't know how to do it well.

It is a step in the right direction that the Riot Squad recognizes that it is supposed to be a full stadium cheer
but it seems the fellow above is disappointed in the response they receive.
They get a crappy response because the students respond too quickly and within 3
rounds it becomes a ...UUUU...RR... cheer, then becomes a muddled mess
It is supposed to be a RRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR
..................................UUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUU
..................................RRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR
.................................UUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUU
cheer. The pause is necessary for it to work so the sound has time to travel across the length of the stadium
The students do a cheer that would work at the RAC RRRRRRRR...UUUUUUUU...RRRRRRRR....UUUUUUUU

It will never be fixed. The students mess it up every single game. Been doing it for 10 plus years

Bump!! Cannot wait for the entrance. The entrance needs to be good. That's all anyone really remembers these days. That's how you land five star recruits. Kidding

best Pre-Game LEAD on this was a few years ago when the Drum major did it right after he body coiled on the ground mid-field after bring the band out.

Shouldn't there be a recording of the right way somewhere? You gotta believe they should be able to get it right if they hear it done the right way... say, early 90s style.

Thanks mkollar

As a fellow member of the Riot Squad e-board (outreach chair), I can confirm we've been working on this all year. He knows, I know, and we all know.

See above. We're working on it.

Didn't happen during MSU. Trust me, we aren't tolerating it.

I don't think you quite understand the difficulty here. It's not as easy you think. The chant really starts to speed up when the wings of the student section chant U instead of R. I know the guy who goes out there, and he's trying his best.

You guys have any questions, let me know.

For the record, Mike, awesome as he is, is not Game Day Operations Director for Rutgers Football/Athletics. He is Game Day Operations Director for the Riot Squad.

So... what's the guy in the picture doing with his left hand? I'm hesitant to ask, but only because it's probably not possible to over-understate necrophilia references. I'm just saying.
Hey, it was colonial times - they were a little hinky back then.

You got it. The real problem is in the wings of the student section. They start chanting U. That kills it immediately. I you have any suggestions, let me know, and I'll get them across!

Big signs with just the letter "R" on it held in them of the entire student section.
Big sings with just the letter "U" on them in front of stadium sides.

Plenty of cheerleaders etc to get this done.

Really? Don't understand the difficulty?
It is a two letter chant.
These are Rutgers students, right?
The real solution would be to have the students do the UUUUUUUUUUUUUU
and not the RRRRRRRRRRRRRR, but it is too late to change that this year.
How hard is it to tell them they are doing it too quickly?
That is where the on field instructions are lacking
He does it way too quickly.

Yes. Really.

AGAIN. IN CASE YOU DIDN'T READ THE LAST FEW TIMES I'VE POSTED THIS. The wings of the student section yell U. That screws up timing. Kaput.

Not all students LOOK at the cheerleaders.
We have plans for next year to get people more up to speed, but believe it or not, it's not as easy as you think. People speed up the chant, and it starts out spontaneously. When the chant starts out spontaneously, I don't give a damn how many people you have on the field raising an R and a U. They didn't start the chant, no one cares what they're doing. You might even notice that the cheerleaders start lowering and raising in time with the student section because they just look silly otherwise. I want it slowed down too. I brought it to the attention of the rest of the Riot Squad e-board. We have brought it to marketing. We are making an effort, I assure you. We have plans for next year to fix this entirely, but it's not like we're not working on the problem here.

When students aren't here early, they don't hear the on-field instructions because they're not there. That's another difficulty.

YES we're RUTGERS STUDENTS. Sound takes time to travel. I didn't even have to go to college for that. I still think the student section should be on the sidelines, not the endzone. Put em right behind the opponent's bench and you've got the sound issued fixed.

Believe it or not, Riot Squad, as of now, is NOT the whole student section. We have limited control over everyone not in our section.

Now. If you have any suggestions beyond, "Hold up a sign and tell people to do it better", then I would love to hear them. But so far, that's the only suggestion I've heard.

Look. E-mail marketing. Drop me some suggestions. But repeating the same thing over and over is just aggravating, when I can solemnly swear to you we are working on it as Riot Squad. We are NOT Rutgers Athletics marketing. We work with them, but we are not them. If you can get this working, then be my guest. I'd love to see it.

Seriously.

I really want to see it freaking work.

Thanks mkollar
