Figure out a way to add seating to the 4 corners. Add bathrooms to the back side of the RAC (student section side.). Add concourse to the front entrance of the RAC. Blow out the old coaches offices and add Audi Hospitality Lounge and new luxury boxes extended over section 118/handicapped seating. Replace all the old torn clothe seats in the 100s with new chair back seats. Add chair back seating up in the 300s. Other than that, I would not change a thing about the current structure of the RAC. None of this should be done in season.

I don't think they will have to play elsewhere. You can renovate the arena in phases during the off-season. Why does everyone think this all happens in one shot? No reason they can't spread it out over 2 or 3 off seasons for construction.

Leave the current structure of the Rack alone. Like going into the Lion's den. Reminds me of Shuttleworth Park in Amsterdam NY where we traveled to with our semi pro baseball club. Sat down a hill in a bowl. Tough place to go & play. Not only were the Amsterdam Textiles a great team full of former minor leaguers & a still good former big league chucker but that park gave them a psychological edge in my book. Fans packed the place & rooted hard. All Polish & Italian blue collar people.
We played them even every year but I was always happy to get the hell out of there.

It needs renovations bad. I think Hobbs is smart enough that he makes sure the upgrades aren't going to lessen atmospheric advantage. The upgrades really only need to happen on the concourses, the entrance and maybe adding a few thousand more seats. None of that should lessen the crowds impact.

I like that other fans don't like it. I like that its cramped. I like that it isn't the shiny new toy.

All it does is make the opposition and it's fans feel uncomfortable. It's our version of Fenway Park. We are 15 points better at the RAC.

If they fvck with the accoutics we will all go ape shit worse than lobbying gopher face to intervene to help hire Schiano back.

What? He killed 118 for 25 seats.

A smarter marketer would have not changed the name but made it for example Jersey Mike's RAC.
Then everyone would just keep calling it the RAC. Just like no one calls Indiana’s Assembly Hall whatever it’s actual name is. If I were Jersey Mike’s I wouldn’t pay Rutgers unless they changed the name.

indiana has this: BEFORE you are actually ticketed inside the arena. We went in here when we played them in football. It was cool.
Trophies, and warmth for fans waiting to punch ticket.
The entire conference has nice arenas. When recruits go visit, we lose them. Missing one season at the RAC is worth coming back to play in what will look like a new building. We are not going to lose the loud crowds and we will continue bring in better players.

Indianas arena is twice the size of the RAC but looks like a palace in comparison and its very loud. Mackey is gorgeous. Maryland had a beautiful facility but they haven’t drawn the crowds to fill it. Wisconsin has a great arena, nebraska has a beautiful arena. The list goes on. The RAC is archaic and looks like a dump. The bathrooms remind me of my elementary school. The concourse is beaten up with cracks in the cement. The wooden bleachers for the students are like a highschool and the seats in the 200s are orange. Whats not to love about it?

Do the renovations so we can take the next step. The building is an eyesore

The outdoors needs renovation.
In the old days it was like a missile silo standing out in a grassy field. Put a shell around it to create concourses...
Does shell mean bubble ? Build out the concourses in a visually appealing way externally,

I'm in favor of renovations except....................never underestimate the ability of Rutgers to screw something up.
THIS IS EXACTLY WHAT I'M AFRAID OF!!!! RAC definitely needs renovations, but man oh man I'll be praying for the best but expecting the worst with Rutgers hands all over it.

But the gameday experience is second to none, and will be jaw dropping to any recruit imagining themselves playing in the Trapezoid of Terror at full force. On the other hand I do agree with you somewhat - we definitely need to beautify/upgrade some things. However, I think for as much of an eyesore as it may be, The RAC is somewhere VERY SPECIAL when there are big games there. I really would be very careful to change much of the blueprint/bones of it - unless you are building a concourse as an add on outside that really doesn't affect anything inside.

The renderings already came out about a month ago… lobby will be on the parking lot side now instead of the current main entrance. Like everyone agrees on, luxury boxes where current offices are. Old (current) lobby + 118 now a permanent bowl .. student section expanded and permanent seats … first 5 rows behind team benches additional student section .. new bucket seats in 200s and 300s finally .. new luxury area at base of 200 level on TV side where the current press boxes and stair entrances are … everything about this is to like !! And doesn’t change the steep stands or the roof!! It will only be louder with more seats and students closer to the court

Has the school approved the rendering as the final version?

Exactly what RU should do. Build out, and they should allow re-entry in this area as well.

In that last image, the wall that is right up against the court (I haven't been in the building in two decades, but it used to house the media room) that the concourse extended out on top of, has been removed and is now replaced with (obviously) sloped seating back to what I'm sure is the main concourse area. You can't remove that wall and guarantee the acoustics will stay the same in the building. You just can't. It's a wall of cinderblock ten feet from the court for sound to bounce off of.

Specifically, I'm talking about the wall on the left side of this image (it's replacement is on the right side in the 4th rendering) ...

This is the rendering ...

Renovate. Don’t know why some think a renovation means worse acoustics. Bunk. I was at the opening of the new Fairfield arena with 3,500 seats and it was LOUD.

Or the RAC at JMA.

You want to build on the existing identity to coopt the natural branding to your advantage.

Like the idea of 5 rows of student section behind the benches!
Back in the day those were the seats for student's willing to pay for a season ticket package I believe.

Actual back and forth I remember between a current poster on this board who ran and has run in mutual circles with me for decades and our head coach approximately 10 feet away:

Bob Wenzel: (Turning around and making the stand up gesture to the crowd) "C'mon! C'mon!

No real response.

Bob Wenzel: (Turning around again) "C'mon guys! Let's go!"

Crickets

Bob Wenzel: (Turning) C'MON! C'M..."

TKR Poster at maybe 21 years old: "Hey Bob, Andrew Kolbasovsky was passed out drunk last night on AZO's basement floor and now that motherf*cker can't hit a layup. Worry more about what he's doing and forget about me for a minute."

Entire section erupts with cheers and laughter.

2 minutes later my man was ejected.

It was something like that or real similar. I expect this post to get a like or two. If I got it right his like will blend in with the rest. Anyway, love the idea of going back to that model with a much more successful and better coached team.

This place is truly magic. I havent talked to many fans who are craving a full renovation. Seems to me most fans just want to leave it the same and add some bathrooms. Curious the opinions and thoughts of this board.

I fall in the camp of dont touch a damn thing and merely just add some bathrooms, hell even just 2 walls full of porta potties.

I wonder why our AD feels its so necessary to renovate. And if its due to jersey mikes requiring it or they pull them sponsorship then fvck em. We’ll re-bid it out and make more money
Porta potties would not only be disgusting, but embarrassing. Give contractor $$ incentives to complete the project from mid-March to mid-November. Empire State Building was built in one year. Put two crews on the project working around the clock...

They have not.

That's hysterical - I was a student during that time and one year I did have student section seats in that area. But yeah I could totally see something like that happen again with somebody giving intel on a player's whearabouts the night before who is playing crappy that day -
lol. Wenzel used to annoy me with him CONSTANTLY asking the fans to get up/get loud.

In the renderings it looks like they are adding the student section seats behind the benches?

Aren't those images by some dude w/ better computer skills than me not something that the university had anything to do with?

Who cares about shiny new things. Atmosphere>>>>. I could care less if i was breathing in asbestos if it meant that type of atmosphere. You think shu fans wouldnt die to have a RAC on campus over the rock?
This x1000.

No way we can sacrifice pounding that ass night in and out at the current RAC config

I dont really understand the need for more seating or boxes. With $7B TV contracts, it's not about selling tickets any more. Make your program as competitive as you can (which the current RAC does) and the money will follow. The Michigan State/Gonzaga game had over 2M viewers.

I would be totally OK with expanding the building outside of the seating area. Bathrooms, indoor ticket area, even doing building extensions behind the seating to expand the concourse and add concessions, all to be done during off season
