Showing absolutely no offense today showed just how much Grant meant to our ability to score. Defense, although a lot better than the offense, clearly can't stop the other guys.
Meanwhile, looks like the rest of the schedule is loaded with teams looking better than us.
Also looks like the injuries may become a real problem to an already paper-thin depth.
This is not meant to be a negative thing. Just looking at what is in front of us.

We played a team that will steamroll nearly any team outside of the top ten. We have big big problems on offense, for sure, but we are going to win games this year. I'm sticking to my 5 win prediction, this changes nothing. I expected it to be bad and it was.

Ash is a very good coach but he is not a miracle worker. You have to be able to move the ball through the air to hang in with a team lie OSU. We can't do that right now, so there was little chance of keeping this game close. Its not the end of the world, and it doesn't really change anything.

I know everyone is sulking right now, but it was always going to be a tough year. People need to be more fair to our staff, and start having some positivity concerning the direction we are going.

If we show up to compete in the 3 games after Michigan, I am going to be feeling fine. If we don't, and it looks like we've packed in the season, that is when I will begin to worry.

Worst offense in Big10 easily, maybe worst in D1.

Defense might keep a few more games close for a half, but the Offense will wear out the D with constant 3 and outs.

We probably finish 2-10

Dark days are back for a while.

Just hoping Jonathan Lewis, Bo Melton and others don't panic and flip

Maybe we can get a few defensive points to eek out one more win.
When you strictly have to depend mainly on the other team to make enough mistakes to win, how can we beat anyone ? Right now I'd say maybe Illinois for no particular reason. Everybody we play has some offense including them.

Ash may have been a good defensive coordinator, but we have no idea if he's a good head coach. He actually looks like he's in over his head right now. A "good" coach would have managed better than 3-12 passing, and better than 119 total offensive yards today.

For better worse, they don't let Ash actually play quarterback. So we will never know if he could do better or not.

Ash is a coach. He is not a miracle worker. People need to stop expecting miracles and get positive. Things are going in the right direction.

In order to join this lovely conference we embarked on the hostile take over of UMDNJ which resulted in 4300 layoffs!! Most were good people with families. They were basically sacrificed so we could get our asses handed to us on a silver platter, week after week after week. That score today was not a true reflection of what could have been. OSU didn't press on the pedal today. No one in OSU wanted to hurt or embarrass coach Ash.

Must beat Illinois on Homecoming to bounce back after 2 likely blowouts. Besides, I'm coming up from South Carolina for it, so they better do me that favor. :sunglasses:

I voted one, unless we give Rettig a set of downs, then Oden, then Rettig, then Oden and so on.
This will keep the defense on their toes. Oden is not ready to take over the starting job by
himself and playing Laviano again is senseless.

This has to be the most ill informed post I've ever read.

The UMDNJ takeover had practically nothing to do with the Big Ten. UMDNJ was a nightmare. The medical school should never have split from Rutgers in the first place.

Not with our personnel. With Grant out, our O is much easier to defend

I have seen no evidence of that. Seems like a decent recruiter but you can bet your last dollar Al Golden would have recruited well too. Calling him a very good coach is more like religion at this point -- faith without seeing. When Our Lord and Savior can go on the road and play with a top 20 team for 3.75 quarters like Lovie Smith (also in his 1st year at a school that's not exactly a magnet for 4 star recruits) did yesterday we will have empirical evidence he's a good coach.

Those in "the know" would differ with you. The medical school (UMDNJ) gave you the boost in the are from an academic perspective as well as University ranking. The B10 was not going to give a midline school from NJ with an odd name an invite to an elite conference unless the medical school was on the menu. Look at the timeline of events and it will make more sense to you. To my point, 4300 people lost their jobs so we can get our asses handed to us week in and week out. One final point, Jim Harbaugh has no connection to Ash like UM does so expect the score to be run up, maybe into the 60's.

Fair enough, but at this point, there is also not really any reason to criticize. We have gotten trounced by two likely playoff teams. We won two other games easily, and we lost to Iowa by a TD despite having multiple opportunities to win the game.

At some point, you blame the staff for failure to execute. That point is not 4 weeks into a new regime on a grossly under talented team. These guys haven't even signed their FIRST recruiting class yet! The coaches don't play the games. The coaches put us in position to win the Iowa game, but the players didn't execute.

Of course there are examples of similar teams hanging in or even winning against top competition. But there are many, many more examples of overmatched team being beaten easily. And one thing you will notice about the exceptions, is that they occur when the kids come out and execute at damn near 100%. Competing week in week out matters... getting lucky and playing a good team to the wire means nothing.

All this doesn't matter!!! Even if we had the best RU team ever (2006) we would only be good for 6 or 7 wins and that includes the gimmes. We will never see a Rose Bowl or a playoff game. So I ask the question. What's the ....,.... point!!! If the dam financial commitment is not there to bring in a battle tested coach and assistants who will bring in kids who's only agenda is to play on Sundays. What's the .......... point!!! You can talk about this to ad nauseam but unless steps are taken similar to what Schnellenberger did at Miami we will never win anything significant.

One way to get better in a hurry is to hire a big name coach. Until we get a little bit better though, no coach at that level will take our money. Ash is the type of coach a school like Rutgers hires. Maryland made a very comparable hire.

That said, keep in mind that the right coordinator can take you to really great places. We went FAR under Schiano. If Ash is as good as Schiano was, we are going to go big places.

RU will be a decided underdog for the rest of the season. RU may not score another offensive TD. The defense will keep some games respectable, but wear down and suffer injuries from being on the field so long.

This will be one of the worst years , offensively, in RU history, but hopefully 2 or 3 years down the road, the growing pains will be worth it.

Still not sold on this staff. We beat Ash twice when he was DC at Arkansas. There were better people out there but we didn't want to pay. And what did Hobbs know about FB anyway coming from SHU.

Stranger things have happened. Maybe things just click for one game. It's not inconceivable to upset UI or IU.
Yea but the poll asked how many more games do we win. If it was 3 or 4 total I would say there was a chance but 3 more from here on out will be tough.

Ash was at Wisconsin in 2012. RU beat Arkansas with Ash in 2013 and it was because Grant returned a punt for a TD and Nova and Carroo made a play on a 4th down for the go ahead TD. Had nothing to do with Arkansas playing bad defense. We just happened to play well.

We need something like the second coming of Teel when after being 1-5, we scored points in bunches. It could happen again, but we don't have the playmakers. Really tough to predict anything.
