Anyone start watching this new pro lax league? I have to say I hope it takes off. Having Paul Rabil run it and being tied to NBC on Sunday afternoons definitely helps. The game needs a legit pro field lax league. And the college game needs the 2 point shot like the pros have.

I like the MLL set up better with a full field and city based teams. They did get a NBC spot on Sundays, but it looks like they bowed to the network's idea of making the game "exciting". A little like the, ugh, XFL. And with 2 leagues, each league has fewer teams so the talent isn't diluted.

I hope that this league takes off, as the MLL seems to be stuck in neutral – or worse. We all like the city-based model in sports; it allows local communities to rally behind the squad. With rare exceptions (Golden State, New England), most rabid fans come from in or around ‘ the cities’ the team represents. I think that this is why the Nets struggled in getting a real solid fan-base, personally. Just an unscientific observation.

With PLL, though, they are trying to address the shoddy pay of pro lacrosse players. That’s what this is all about. Guys that have been playing in the MLL simply make more money in the business of lacrosse than they do from actually playing. For the studs, like Rabil, it’s not too bad. But for a rookie who is just good enough to get on the field, they don’t have as many supplemental income options other than full-time work outside of their game. They are using the single ownership model to get the league set on solid footing. I bet in a few years, you’ll see the league stabilize with ‘owners’ and cities that will support them. But it won’t happen until things are steady.

In terms of the lacrosse, and some of the rule changes…I like them. I’d like to see a more aggressive tinkering to the FO game, like mandating that your hands can’t be in a certain grip, or putting the sticks further away. I might also bring the dimpled ball, like a golf ball, to see if some more fun could be had there. I might also ditch the fourth long pole. Anything that can be perfected at a higher level and then adopted in the college game on down…

Fair enough with respect to money, but I don't see the PLL set up drawing more eyeballs and fans than the city based model. They have NBC now but that will change if they don't draw.

On the other hand, I'd consider a dimpled ball to utter heresy. The day that happens is the day I stop watching, at any and all levels. FOGO changes and fourth long pole are something I would not be in favor of, but am less strident about. I wonder whether going back (way back?) to a faceoff where the sticks are closer together and the ball is placed between the lower wall of the two sticks would make things better of worse. Allowing a FOGO to be hit before establishing possession would probably never fly due to safety/concussion considerations.

I like it. The shortened field is makes it more offensive and the shorter shot clock is a no brainer. The 2 pointer needs to come into college, as does challenges. It's so dumb that isn't in yet. The production has been pretty good.

I am not educated enough about faceoffs to understand what is going on there. I do know they have a disproportionate impact on a game. I am up for some changes, but can't decide what they are. Perhaps as soon as the whistle blows, it's a free for all. No players required to stay in boxes.

I believe after year 3 the PLL's BP has teams moving into cities. There is some pretty strong backing in that league. I wouldn't be surprised to see it have some real staying power.

Even periphery guys are making some decent money now. If you are a professional lacrosse player now, even guys like Jules who aren't household names yet like Rabil, you should be able to pull in $100K between camps and playing. The pie is getting much bigger now. It isn't going to be confused with the NFL, but more guys are doing nothing but lacrosse now more than ever.

I was at the games on Saturday.. Exciting lacrosse, evenly matched teams but I was concerned by the attendance. Looked to me to be only 4-5k..

Attendance looked poor. Hopefully the ratings were good.

Games in Harrison, New Jersey with no local advertising that I'm aware of. Did they offer group discounts to the local HS and Club teams? Probably would have drawn better at Hofstra.

I think the venues they play in are important. Fans are too, but playing in a college lacrosse stadium screams small time.

In the world of New Jersey lacrosse so does Harrison. Playing in High Point would be more prestigious, but in June would probably draw fewer fans.

That's a newer MLS stadium. I wouldn't call that small time. Looks perfect for lacrosse actually.

Yea, in terms of the facilities, it seemed perfect. Nice grass field with only lacrosse lines. The crowd just felt like a temple football game at the Linc. Sparse crowd spread out.

Out of curiosity, how did you hear about the scheduling? The only place I saw anything was IL. Absolutely no advertising in local media or television.

My boys are in tune with the Lax world. They play at the high school varsity level.

The gate revenue will barely cover the rental costs of the venues. How much is the TV contract worth? What is the league overhead in terms of contract costs and health care for the players and then the admin overhead. My guess would be about $5/6 mil. Does the PLL financial model make $$$? I know there's a billionaire behind the league, but how long do you fund a losing model. I'd love to see it succeed as I enjoy watching lax. It's all about the TV $$$

I doubt there are expectations that it's turning a profit in week two. Having dinner tomorrow with former RU player who plays in the league. I'll see if I can get some info. that's postable.

I went on Saturday as a birthday present for my younger son.

- Agree the "look" of Red Bull Arena gives an air of professionalism compared to the MLL Lizards use of Hofstra's field. But...we'll see.
- Did not notice the shortened field at first until my son pointed it out.
- Crowd was meh, more lively in the 2nd game of the doubleheader.
- Cheered for Jules anytime he was on the field.
- Nardella was out there too.
- Not a fan of the PLL's "barnstorming" idea. If it takes off hopefully they do a more of a city-area based team model.
- Only knew about this because like @RUtom my younger guy is tuned in. And he is big fan of the PLL. I am more of a wait and see.

Sat behind Greg "The Beast" Gurenlian's parents during his game. Talk about salt of the earth kind of people! They couldn't have been nicer or more approachable. Especially the dad. Very chill and cool guy. Gave both my boys a nice pep talk. Could tell my younger guy was really taking it to heart...went home that night and worked on his stick work and shot.

Surprised Rabil didn't at least make an appearance on Saturday.

Attendance for weeks 2 and 3 were 10,773 and 11,398. Of course that's over 2 days so its around 5,500 per day.

Took a peek at the "Chicago" game on Sunday. It did not look like there were that many there.

MLL is only averaging around 2600 this year. They've been in decline since 2011 when they averaged 6300. To a degree I think they're probably cannibalizing each other. And it may be that summer is just not optimal for professional lax as opposed to Sundays in the spring. Of course I go back to the 70's when they tried to establish a summer professional box league. Played in an amateur league in the summer of '75 sponsored by the Boston Bolts. But that summer they played in the unairconditioned Boston Garden and that was the year the Sox won the pennant and Carlton Fisk had that classic HR in extra innings in the World Series. They lost so much money they took the league down with them.

This coming weekend they are playing at Hopkins with an 8500 capacity. Problem is that on Saturday, the two games are separate ticked events @ $25 each. I also noticed they have no children's tickets. Doesn't seem wise to not offer kids tix at a discount.

I know my younger Son will not agree (because it's before his time) but I do get a little of an XFL feel to this venture.
