PSU Coach James Franklin suspended backup DT Fred Hansard for the first half of this past week's Michigan game (Hansard wound up not playing at all) because he put a hit on Maryland QB Tualia Tagovailoa while standing on the sideline!

Tagovailoa drifted out of bounds on a play toward the Penn State sideline. Hansard, who was not in the game, shoved the unsuspecting Terrapins quarterback. He was not penalized for the hit.

Irony of ironies:
Terps coach Mike Locksley said after a 31-14 loss that he didn’t see the incident, but that his coaches upstairs in the booth “thought it was probably a play that should have been penalized.” Locksley said the team might be in contact with the Big Ten Conference office about the no-call. “We’ll take the necessary measures to turn it in if it was [objectionable],” he said.

After the incident with Noah Vedral last year, I would say that Locksley should be focused on his own team doing things like this.

ehh.. it wasn't as bad as Tagliavuoa made it look.. QB was going to hit someone deep on the sideline... he could have controlled his speed better

But Locksley does not run a clean program.. this video was one of at least 2 dirty plays by this guy... DL Ami Finau

Except that Locksley made Finau apologize to Vedral, and Finau was suspended for 1/2 of the next game:

"I had a conversation with Ami about it. I also called Greg Schiano that night and had a conversation with coach Schiano, who I have great respect for, after viewing the play. And I let him know. I said, 'Greg, that's not who we are and I want to apologize for the play. And Ami also wanted to apologize.' Greg didn't answer when I called and then he called me back, so we had Ami write a letter to Rutgers, to the quarterback, apologizing that he sent off.

"I can tell you we're also going to handle some things internally with Ami. He will be suspended for the first half of this game because of that play. Nobody feels more terrible than Ami does because I can tell you, having been around him, it's not who he is, even though that play shows it. But I also want to send a strong message that we're not going to play games that way. We're not going to compete that way. And Ami understands and our team understands it. I showed the play to our team and we worked through that along with a lot of other plays in that game, whether they were penalties or just not good plays by us. We're able to put that behind us now and Rutgers is behind us, and Ami will be better for this and Greg was very understanding, and I apologize to him and the Rutgers program for that play. That's not what Maryland football is about."

Greg may have kicked him right out of the program.

I agree. Hansard should get a flag, but Tagliavuoa was flopping big time.

That may or may not be true. But fair is fair. Locksley gave similar discipline when there was no penalty against Finau during the game. Not standing up for Finau or Locksley. Just setting the record straight.
Good thing this was “organized college sports” played in a stadium and on TV which somehow makes people above the law, and not a pickup game or something, or the guy could have been charged for assault

In the history of football, rugby, soccer and hockey, has a player ever been charged with and convicted of assault for actions in a game?

At least he intended to ... when MD's last game of 2020 was cancelled due to COVID, the suspension wasn't executed.

Perhaps Hansard was getting frustrated - that apparently was his first hit on a QB this year!

if Lockskey wanted to do justice, he should suspend Finau for the entire Rutgers game this year. We lost Vedral for much more than a half after the ankle twist. And benefited from the 1/2 game suspension? The next team not us

Good question.

Except Finau was never suspended because they didn't play their next game due to Covid.
Fair point. Perhaps someone should remind Locksley about this.
