QB Choice: Rettig Sealed His Fate When He Ran for a 1st Down....

We all get this. But what happens when he has a bad day? Will FLood go against his mantra and pull the starter when the starter is having a bad day? This is really the big question.
That IS a good question and I hope Flood will be quicker to put in a relief QB while there is still a chance to win games. Doesn't mean a completely QB change for the season. It's just an acknowledgement that QBs are human and can have bad days.

I'm calling bullshit. It's easy to say you saw it. Provide the details of how you know it happened.

I'm not naming names. But I played Div 1 football and saw it firsthand (and no, not involving me playing or not playing). Believe me or don't; it doesn't matter to me.

Like I said, I don't agree with the decision and I think it is the wrong one, but I'll still root for the team, Flood and Laviano. I hope Laviano tears it up and I will gladly eat a big plate of crow. But I'm not betting on it.

No one will ever convince me that coaches don't have favorites who are not the best players. They are human. They may believe that that one guy may be better than the next. But, ultimately, it is bias. It's life. It happens in our jobs everyday. Why would anyone believe that coaches are any different than managers, owners, CEOs, etc.

I'm not saying that Flood is biased against Rettig. But, Flood no different than anyone else. He has biases.

I think both will be better than nova or really anyone else ru has seen in at least 15 years. It could be situation where flood really didn't want to penalize those guys but had to to keep face and is now making up for it by staring a kid that did just as well as rettig but will flip the case and let rettig play the second half. Coming from where we have been we should be happy we have even one of these guys from the looks of things, much less both

I certainly appreciate all of the info Bobbie gives and I do like when he gives us his opinion. But just because he said Rettig should start doesn't mean that's correct. People quote him as if that is an irrefutable fact. Didn't he predict a losing season for us last year?

The talent level between the 2 QBs is almost even but for different reasons.

But as a guy who played(albeit back in the 70s LOL) the TEAM knows who they prefer and the TEAM reacts differently to each QB.

I thought the TEAM responded to Laviano slightly better than Rettig,,,and i was a Rettig fan going into the game...

Certainly Caroo is easy to respond to....,,and the decisions been made..Laviano...like I said,,I was a solid Rettig guy.................bring on WSU!

I just hope this doesn't become the 2015 version of Dodd to Sanu....and we move the ball around the field and don't lock on 1 guy. Looking forward to our offense. We're not Ohio State but we do have a lot of talent out there to make plays.

among other things . . Bobby is a good writer, a great contributor, and I gladly pay to subscribe to him. But Bobby is also a human, like the rest of us.

I dont say this to attack Bobby, but i say this b/c I think people have deep-rooted confirmation bias, and hear what they want to as well as block out what they don't want to. (they even play up throws/moves by hayden, downplay the close INT, yet exaggerate how bad some of Chris's throws were. Its all confirmation bias). Bobby also reported on times when Laviano seemed sharper. Fans at open practice gave a similar report that day. The stats are extremly close, the eye test is close but i honestly think Laviano gets the nod there. Bobby likes Rettigs improvement (not to speak for him), but that isn't dispositive of who is the better QB for the team right now.

I agree with this. Lets see if Laviano stuck with Carroo b/c of the whole halftime thing, or if he has a problem of doing that going forward.

Also consider that even with open practices and scrimmages, fans and press aren't in the film room. Coaches say all the time after practices that they can't comment until they watch the film.

There may be strengths and weaknesses that aren't as apparent at game/practice speed as they are on film.

What happens to Bobby if RU loses too many games? What happens to Flood if RU loses too many games?

You think Flood is placing non-winning partiality for a player over whatever helps the team win?
You are conflating two different things. Flood's own biases could lead him to think CL is the better play and more likely to lead to wins, even if he isn't.

Not sure what your point is. Everybody has biases.

Flood's biases are arrived at by considering who helps us win games, just like everybody else who cares about RU FB. I trust the combined bias of Flood and staff over that of the fans on Rivals or the media, or even Bobby, with add due respect to everyone involved and acknowledging that everybody makes mistakes.

Well, I wouldn't mind locking in on Carroo if that means getting a TD on nearly every throw!

Wazoo has up to 10 potential targets.

Isn't it time that we use Carroo as a decoy on # of plays, opening up Grant (sizzle when he's on the move), Patton, Agudosi (waiting for him to DEMAND the ball....and OWN the D)- plus we should use James, Hicks out of the backfield and then let Carroo do his THANG! TE's need touches too. If we become too predictable we become 0-1 that week.

I remember about 8 years ago under coach Schiano we went 1-5 with Mike Teel at QB and then ran off 6 straight victories. There was a decent backup QB on the team by the name of Natale (sp). In the first 5 games Teel was totally off and in my opinion had no confidence. Fans pleaded for a QB change but Schiano demonstrated that he was the boss and sacrificed 4 straight games.

As for Laviano and Rettig, I think they are evenly matched. I feel that Laviano will perform well against WSU. If he does not then then the focus will be on Flood.

Natale was terrible at QB. WTF are you talking about? When he did see the field in 2009, when Savage was injured, he could barely move the chains.

BTW pretty sure in 2008 the only backup to Teel Schiano would employee was the infamous "Jabu Package" off running the ball up the gut every damn time.

Dom Natale was named the starter in 2009, and started at home in the debut of the South End Zone Bleachers against Cincinnati.

With some tough games on the schedule, I think there will be several times where the starter will struggle and the #2 will get an opportunity. I think this will work itself out over the course of the Fall. Just hoping this is the right call for this week so we get a W. And if Flood sticks with the starter even in out of hand games with a true #2 this year, well then there is a problem. But I think the top tier big ten teams will give RU fits again this year and each guy will/should get their shots. Then we see who shines.

Because he is impartial.

Bobby, forgive me for saying this but...there is a reason Bobby is a writer and not a P5 coach. Correct me if I have this mixed up but just before the season started last year, after watching all the practices and scrimmages, etc...I believe the "impartial" opinion was that we all know who and what Nova is as a QB. Bobby or any of our staff here on SN also did not see anything from Nova that said he could help this team be successful in the B1G last year. Based almost solely on Nova, most of our staff had us winning 4 games. At the end of the day- Flood and his staff had it right and SN and our staff had it wrong.

I am a Rettig fan but I am not in the clubhouse and I cannot make a decision on who starts or plays based on what I have seen. Anyone that thinks Flood is going to make a choice out of stubbornness when it could cost him his career, is just stupid. I also have to believe Ben/Fridge had major input into the decision as well. I'm not sure I take anyone's opinion on QB's over these 2 guys.

I just hope that whoever starts can move the offense and put some points on the board, if they don't, Flood needs to make a change ASAP. We can't suffer through another Kent State/Penn State QB performance. Our schedule is tough enough without giving away wins.

Kent State and PSU games don't deserve to be in the same sentence...

And we lost big that game. He couldn't move the office. He wasn't a good passing QB.
No one denies that; Savage started the second half as a true freshman. Cincinnati finished the regular season undefeated.
You skipped over the part when you denied that he saw the field except when Savage was injured. Natale was the starter out of camp.
Not to mention the fact that he quarterbacked a Savage-deprived offense to a 34-13 victory over Maryland in week 5. No TD's and only 4 completions for < 50 yards, but no fumbles and no picks.

I remember when Laviano came in after halftime against Nebraska and the commentators stated "We don't know much about him except he has a very similar skill set to Nova," to which I shook my head and muttered something unrepeatable. But then he scampered a few times and I was like "Play this guy all year!" They both are upgrades to what we had.
