I was talking to a customer the other day, who came in wearing a SPP Lacrosse shirt. He told me he was a WR and DB on the football team . He commutes to school everyday, all the way from Monroe.. I was shocked when the kid told me he is going to be a Soph, as he is 6'1 and solid. Definitely has the look of a future D1 player. Just wondering if this kid is expected to be the star he looks like. Name is Tracy Bowers.

Why the hell is he going all the way to Jersey City for an education ?
Aren't there any good parochial schools in central Jersey ?

Kids from all over NJ and NYC boroughs attend SPP. Just go to the Hoboken train terminal after 3pm and there are SPP kids taking NJ Transit trains to all parts of the state. I remember when half of the kids from SPP were from Bayonne now kids are commuting from Essex, Bergen, Morris, Union, Middlesex, Somerset, Manhattan, and whatever kids from Monmouth county Hansen can fit into his car on his commute to Jersey City. SPP does not rely on local kids for most of its student body and football roster.

You mean going to JC to play football dont you? Also way to much info here from OP, if kid tells you hanson picks him up everyday and you head straight here and say that. It may not be obvious to us who he is, but will to clear to his coach.

OP's last line is the kid's name...Tracy Bowers.
No mystery here.

Yeah cause Monroe HS is on par with SPP

The butt hurt anti parochial crowd never ceases to disappoint.

While Monroe HS prepares to go over the road to Old Bridge, Bowers and his teammates will be taking the trip of their lives to Ireland to play in the Emerald Classic.

Sounds like a touch choice to me...

Has anyone seen the new building Prep will be opening in a few months. It's right next to the football field. Great education and great facilities to match. My best friend will be sending his kid there. Two trains and plenty of time to read and study.

I was wondering what that new building was as I ride by on the light rail from work everyday. Esp since it cut into the field like ut does.

BTW, if kids want to ride multiple trains to SPP, why not? It gives those kids who may be top level athletes great exposure that would help them out. When i used to live in South Jersey, some kids from Camden took the same 400 bus, Riverline, NEC train, PATH train that I took everyday. He took an extra PATH train to get to St Anthony to play Bball.

Gee I may done the same thing if I had a choice to play BBall for Bob Hurley or Camden High where nobody gives a rats ass about anyone but themselves.

Uh, I was questioning not why he didn't go to Monroe HS....whatever that is. I was questioning why a kid from central Jersey wouldn't just go to one of the fine parochial schools a lot closer to his home than Jersey City. Do you really think it was the trip to Ireland that lured him all the way up to Hudson County ?

In central jersey it is St. Joseph's of Metuchen, Bishop Ahr 5 minutes from there in Edison and Immaculata in Somerville. All nice programs that have put quality players in good D1 programs.St Joe's is a powerhouse in hoops and becoming one in football. Will any of them ever be SPP or Bosco? Maybe.I would rather the guys who live in CJ stay in CJ.

In Monroe, some kids go to St. Joes, and some go to Ahr. However the school of choice seems to be St. john Vianny. Even though it is Monmouth County, it is much closer to Monroe than Metuchen is. Still,no one has answered my question whether Tracy is expected to be the star player at SPP that he appears to be. All the local kids say he is an absolute stud player.

Because all "of the fine parochial schools in central jersey" combined, don't have the history or offer the opportunities SPP does. And while I'm biased, begrudgingly, the same can be said for Bosco or Bergen.

That's why.

SPP now like many Northern Parochials recruit instate and out trying to emulate Bosco...see Paramus Catholic.

You can't judge athletes just because their ''jacked''....i knew guys that were so developed they couldn't comb their hair...you need heightened vision and sharp instincts to succeed at the highest levels...what happened to ''jacked'' Ted Fields i think his name was...the OL target we pulled on last yr?

Maybe because it was his and his parents choice to go to St Peters to have the opportunities and exposure that SPP seems to offer.

Never said he was jacked. He looks like an athlete. I've been around several in my day, including six future NBA players who worked for my business while at RU. Just saying he passes the eyeball test.

St. John Vianney seems intent on becoming the up and coming program among central Jersey parochials. If a star player is looking to win, it's a good choice, as the program has recently sent a few kids to top schools (including RU). If, on the other hand, that player is looking to compete at the highest level, nationally, then Bosco or SPP is probably the way to go.

Assuming all of them are free, it's easy to just go with the best offer.

I hear what you're saying but it's not exactly Monroe HS' 'fault' they're not going to Ireland to play football.

Joe P.

Ted Fields was never 'jacked' lol. Quite the opposite.
I thought i remembered some posters saying he was built like a ''Lil Abner'' in overalls but lacked athletic skills so Flood polled his offer? I see his name listed on Uconn's recruiting board this yr as 1 of their targets....looks like he ended up at Deerfield Academy? Maybe it was academics?

Yeah, I wonder how long it will be before you see these kids going to St. Joe's Metuchen instead of heading north. Now that they have committed to building a program, you know that they will commit all the resources they need to succeed. It will be interesting to watch over the next couple of years.

Yeah. I was just wondering what would make a kid wanna ride an hour plus each way every day.... to Jersey City no less...no matter who is driving. If Monroe HS was the only alternative, I'd understand. But there are plenty of parochial schools in the area where he lives that could provide most of what he's looking for. Except for that trip to Ireland. But it's IRELAND....not Hawaii or Puerto Rico or the Virgin Islands. A trip to Ireland can't be THAT much of a lure for recruits.

Obviously you haven't been to Jersey City in awhile. SPP is in a great location and a great school. It's a no brainer no matter how far the commute. If you notice the best parochials are generally single sex. And that goes for the girls schools as well.

It's not anybody's "fault."

But when people who have no understanding of the schools in question throw out "why go to jersey city or Oradell or Ramsey, when you can go to red bank Catholic" is stupid.

There are 1,000 reasons why you would go to SPP over RBC and football wouldn't even make that list b

From Monroe it's 45 minutes to St John Vianney, an hour to St Joe's Metuchen or an hour 15 to SPP. Honestly, what's the difference?

Depends on where in Monroe. My oldest had two Monroe sisters on her bus. Their trip time was just over 30 minutes. The pickup time being 0615 makes a difference, of course.

You must drive real slow, but I see your point. From where my store is in Monroe, it's about 30 minutes to Vianny and 40 to St Joes. But Monroe is huge.

Hmmm, I wonder who that was directed at? LOL

St Joes Metuchen needs another 5 years to get its program established and then it will be a monster. It's not easy to start a program and become an instant power. They'll figure it out.

OP - According to a few of my sources at the google, he enters the upcoming season (sophomore) with 0 career stats so either he is new to football or he never saw the field as a freshman, looks more like a lacrosse prospect to me.

St Augustine seems to be trying to establish a serious program also

So like the North Jersey Catholics it seems the battle lines are being drawn, talent wise, in central and south jersey

They feel like they're getting a better product, going to Jersey City. Same reason why Jersey kids go to Michigan, Penn State and Ohio State. Carroo went all the way to Don Bosco from Edison, when he had more local choices.

SJV abruptly parted ways with Ciccotelli last year, after only one season, due to his recruiting practices. If a kid with D1 potential wants to focus on football it's understandable why he'd look elsewhere now.
