Watched most of their game against Buffalo yesterday. These are my opinions of their positional units and their grades:

OFFENSE
O Line - Their problems, if anything, are worse than last year. Not as good as WSU's. maybe not any better than NSU's. And I think they lost one of their starters in the game. D+

Receivers and TE's - The WR's are clearly not in the same league as Carroo, Grant and Patton. The rainy conditions might have had an effect, but my opinion of Gesiki's hands are "manitos de piedra". C

RBs - Barkley showed some real talent, but not a lot of depth. B

QB - Hackenberg has talent, but his frustration is obvious and growing. Looked like he was arguing with Franklin on the sidelines. B

DEFENSE

D Line - This is a VERY talented group, easily the best RU will have faced this year, and they have some depth. A

LBs - Not bad, but I didn't see any Mike Hull's out there. B-

DBs - Weakest part of the D, but more talent than what RU has back there. Our WRs should be able to get open. C+

For those of you who didn't see the game, Buffalo got called for at least 6 false starts and 3 chop block penalties. Except for the TTFP d-line they were their own worst enemy.

If RU can at least begin to close the gaping hole in their secondary in the deep middle and minimize their mistakes on the O this is a game that can be won.

I don't see this team going into that environment and coming out with a "W". I very much hope I'm wrong.

I sure as hell hope Rutgers wins but I certainly will not being talking trash this week here in PA. Winnable yes, likely no.

IMO, you over assessed our LBs and under assessed our OL. I think this OL can run block a little bit if given the opportunity.

I used to think we had this one in the bag, now, I think we will be lucky to win 3 games this year.

Enjoy your last "winnable game" against TTFP as the program says goodbye to the coaching change and sanctions era.

Vegas opened Penn State favored by 7.

I disagree. The best player on your team last night, by far, is still playing and will have to be accounted for by the Penn State staff.

Grant?

You do realize we have no defense and the way things have been going here, more players will be suspended if Flood himself is not suspended or fired by Saturday.

Unless you cover no punts or kickoffs you will probably win. Ugh I hate saying that but this team is just soooo bad.

I watched your game yesterday in its entirety. I'm no brilliant mind, but these are two pretty bad football teams. I don't know why people on here are thinking that we will be able to chuck the ball around the field as the weakest part of our entire team is pass blocking. IMO, the key to the game is our rushing attack. Our OL has shown the ability to run block and it will keep you honest and not allow you to pin your ears back and blitz if we can get the running game going. If we can't, very difficult for us to win. You may actually be able to run on us as well as our DTs are great, but they are meant to allow the LBs to make plays. The LB group that played yesterday is not your typical PSU LB group. Will be interesting to see how it plays out.

Have you seen the PSU offense this year? It is setting offensive football back 50 years.

This PSU fan is very worried about the game and thinks it is going to be close.

Our offense will keep you in the game.

If you watched our game, what did you think of our "tackling" against an offense that couldn't handle mighty Portland State? I say it in quotes because it's more of a light caress.

Couldn't score against Portland State in a heavy rain. With clear skies WSU would have won by at least 21.

It would be such a huge accomplishment to win this game at night in Happy Valley that, honestly, it would mean for me at least that Flood had earned enough capital to survive the off field stuff. I just don't see it happening, but if we do pull it out I think it should be the end of the Flood grousing.

Wasn't it raining in the 4th quarter at HPSS on Saturday?

Regardless, this is a "winnable" game, for sure, but The Nitters tend to elevate their level of play on Saturday nights at Beaver, and that, combined with the disaster we saw on the field this past weekend, might be enough for them to not only win, but cover, unfortunately.

I wasn't in the stands, but the rain didn't look too heavy to me on television.

Agree on winnable but difficult. But given how the season is looking, I may soon be at the whole "if nothing else... win this game" perspective. Would love to see us take this one.

I would be careful being all in on this game. With all of the off field problems for Rutgers, I really think what I thought was going to be a tough game like last year will not be this year. On the bright side, maybe now some hotel rooms in State College will open up later in the week when some decide to bag the game now.

Neither was I, unfortunately, I was actually driving to a wedding reception during the 4th quarter and, IIRC, both times Wazzou had the ball Carlin specifically stated "the rain coming down much heavier now..." Regardless, it was a steady, light rain, against Portland State, and it was STILL Portland State. :(

Rutgers' defense will match up much better against PSU. obviously, we're not a spread offense like Wazzou. With the OL issues, we keep it tight with double TE formations.....Rutgers DL is better suited, plus won't expose the secondary as much. obviously, if PSU gets a few 1st downs, goes up a few scores, wears down the defense a bit....then they'll open it up a bit. We saw a little bit of that in the 4th quarter against Buffalo.....but, that's Buffalo.

then again...our defense isn't like Wazzou's either.

2 terrible teams bangin heads....anything can happen.

Run block? Penn State will need a huge improvement in OL play and schemes to run the ball effectively against any decent B1G opponent.

Vegas has money line at 3 to 1 odds on Penn State winning. That usually tells more than the spread.

I'm not a gambler. what does this mean? you bet $100 on Rutgers, you win $300?.....I don't know, is that typically a lot?

Once you get up to 3 to 1 you see a lot less upsets. It happens but not as often as say 2 to 1. Betting on PSU you'd need to out up a little more than $300 to win $100. And bettering on Rutgers $100 would win a little less than $300.

Can't argue with any of this which is why, in the end, I gotta give it to the team with the Saturday night home crowd that, let's face it, might be "ready" to get at Rutgers - especially the student section - after both your team's start AND our off-field issues. I didn't like this one to begin with, after you guys lost to Temple (the "kiss of death" for RU 2 weeks later...) and looked "meh" against Buffalo, and now I like it less.

Vegas is setting the line saying that Rutgers has a 25% chance to win.

I really don't care what the Vegas line says. Penn State has a below-average offensive line. If they're able to consistently run on you, you've got problems. Temple stoned them for the last three quarters of that game, and their most effective play against Buffalo, a middle-of-the-road MAC team, was probably the jet sweep. They do have enough good skill players to make them dangerous. As a writer for the Harrisburg Patriot said, they remind you of an SEC team such as LSU that doesn't look as if it knows what it's doing for about three quarters, then bites you in the butt with a long bomb from a good skill player.

so, you're saying there's a chance?...lol

well....as much as I trust Vegas, any rational PSU fan will take little comfort in that money-line with our OL. We made Temple's defense look like the Steel Curtain. (with all due respect to Temple, they're actually pretty good.....just not that good)

if Flood wants to get in any better graces with the Rutgers' faithful, a win at Penn State will do the trick. nobody's taking this game lightly.

Can you guys tack on some more suspensions/controversies this week? anything would help.....thanks:)

Well, I guess we will see on Saturday. I would take my chances with the OL being able to run block over pass block.

Penn State's WRs not in the same league with Patton and Grant? Wake up to reality....Patton and Grant were 3star commits for RU. Lewis, Godwin, Blacknall, Johnson, Hamilton, Charles, and others are 4star commits with unlimited upside. You should know this as 3 of them are NJ boys you'd love to have.

I rate Grant on what he has done in college, not how many stars he had as a HS senior.

star gazing on the Rutgers' board now?.....please stop

though, the argument that Patton & Grant are better than Godwin & Hamilton is silly....but whatever.
