Pikiel will be pulling in top talent in the near future. His team is fun to watch and they are going to upset some ranked teams this year. The RAC will be rocking. And everyone will take notice that this isn't Bob Wenzel's Scarlet Knights, or Bannon's, Water's, Hill's, Rice's or Jordan's. This is a whole new level.

As long as Pikiel sticks around, we are going to be very good.

Even a fan like myself, who knows next to nothing about BB, can see that this team has lots of room for improvement. At times they looked really out of control. Looked like a lot more points were left on the court. Too many turnovers and still not as good as they should be at the foul line.
That said, their D in the first half was really something to watch. EM was taking some desperate shots. Quite an honor to now own the NCAA record for fewest points allowed in a half.
I do think this team will get better and better as the season goes forward. They really look like a team that thinks they can win and that's half the battle.

2020 and 2021 are the key. Practice facility at Pike’s back. Everything is ready to go. If those classes move up to 7th ish by average player rating then we have liftoff!

Anyone know of any names that have been in the door this season? Not preseason

In this context, Wenzel should not be in the conversation. Ha actually made the NCAA Tournament.

All due respect, Wenzel was a complete disaster. Yes, he got us to the tourney twice in his first 3 years but never came close again. Once his trio of quality transfers graduated, he was done. His teams in the Big East were a complete joke. His recruiting was Shea-esque. He couldn't hold Pikiels clipboard on the sideline. So, in this context I believe he fits perfectly into the conversation.

All it takes is to reflect on the Wenzel weave for a minute (and then contrast that to the passing we are watching this season) to realize we finally have a basketball program being formed. And the PG of the future is still one year away...

Agree with all of this. Wenzel was way, way overrated.

I agree... Wenzel's light began to dim towards the end. However, Pike's receipts don't quite add up to Wenzel's just yet.

In the Big East, Wenzel had some awful recruits such as Jason Maronge; Johnny McCrimmon; Darko M (from Yugoslavia and I recall Wenzel never even seeing him play) but he also did recruit Geoff Billet; Rob Hodgson and Earl Johnson if I recall. He wasn't a good recruiter but he did bring in some quality kids. When things never improved over several years (I believe 1998) - it was sayonara Bob and in with the Nudist - Kevin Bannon and his soon to be drama.

With all due respect to Wenzel, he was coach as they transitioned to the Big East with Ivy League admission standards still in place.

He couldn’t recruit because there were not tons of great HS basketball players with 1600 SAT’s.

Let’s not forget we just got blown out by St Johns.

Not trying to be negative but let’s keep some perspective. As a young team that will rely on outside shooting were going to have some off nights.

I do agree that we are turning the corner, however.
With the bigs we now have on the team I wouldn't say were going to rely on outside shooting. Eugene, Shaq1, Shaq2, Issa, Myles and Duke will
get their points on the inside. They'll get a lot of rebounds too.

Ivy league admission standards? If you're talking about Rutgers College when it was still intact as a separate entity, it wasn't ever quite that high. Probably more like Michigan or UVA. That wouldn't matter anyway because the other colleges like Livingston college were there that were less selective.

Ivy League was tongue in cheek. We had higher than minimum NCAA standards at the time. Higher than other schools.

Bottom line is Wenzel was failing badly in the A-10 long before the Big East came calling and that was against a lot of programs with terrible facilities, basketball tradition, and no commitment to winning. The "glory years" of his 4 post-season appearances we were seeded 3rd, 5th, 1st, and 8th (out of 9 teams in 1992) in the A-10. I could make a strong argument that with the exception of his 1st year where he was relying on old Tom Young/Craig Littlepage recruits exclusively in a really down year for the A-10, those next three other glory years were all disappointments.

He basically tried to grab whatever quick fix he could in recruiting and with zero academic support structure in place back then we also seemed to lead the A-10 and Big East in "academic separations". Some of those guys like Charles Jones and Waliyy Dixon actually had a bit of talent so maybe things might've been a little different compared to today when no one ever seems to flunk out.

Sacrilege!

I agree. Pike can coach, has a way with players, a great staff and will soon have a top-tier practice facility to tout to recruits. But, recruiting the top 5-star players is a very dirty game. So, I suspect we will feast on 4-stars, which should be more than enough to get the job done.

I disagree that Wenzel fits into the conversation. I wasn’t happy, but calling him a “disaster“ is going too far. He inherited more of a disaster than Pike. His first NCAA team was before Duncan and Hughes were eligible. After they graduated, he was recruiting for local players in a league that had no television presence to speak of against a league that dominated the airwaves. Many, like Eric Murdoch, mentioned this specifically when they explained why they were not considering RU. It was an impossible recruiting situation. He was given two years once he got to the big east. That league was every bit as tough then as the Big Ten is now. He went 11-25 in the league as compared to our 6-30 the last two years in the big 10. I do think that Pike will be our best in living memory. However, Wenzel was not among our worst.

Pike is here, the program is here, because of the past... one can argue ‘what if’s’ to the nth degree but it all leads to Now.

If Wenzel had better facilities and academic support... if Bannon hadn’t screwed up.... if Fred Hill Jr hadn’t screwed Waters and had he not gone psycho at a baseball game and had Rice not done his stupid sh1t....(going from memory about Hill undermining Waters to get him fired... maybe I’m remembering incorrectly)

Pike is the sum of all of that. He wouldn’t and couldn’t be our coach before he was hired but now that he IS the coach we’re experiencing all the Good with it....

We all thought Wenzel was a genius his first year because he took the Littlepage teams to the NCAA Tournament. Then a few years later we realized it was because Jeff Van Gundy was on the staff

Who at RU hired Van Gundy?

If we take Wenzels whole career at RU into account, I think Pikiels record is better already. And I'm pretty sure one of Pikiels teams could also have won the A-10 in 89. That was not a great league.

That guy had no business playing high division 1 basketball. He wasn’t even the best rec basketball player on Livingston campus. Recruits like that signaled the beginning of the end for Wentzel.
