Recruiting or should I say lack of...true story

Yeah, turning around basketball is the reason Hobbs was hired. It must have just been a coincidence that Hobbs was hired just as the school was going to fire the football coach and begin the quest to hire a new one. Little did anyone know that he was really hired for the purpose of getting a new basketball coach, something that might happen 1/2 to 1 1/2 years later. Nice job deducing that. No one else would have.

By the way, the reasoning that RU lost its one and only recruit for the 2016 class because of the football team is the most absurd bit of "anything I can't think of" reasoning to support what's going on in basketball. Or, maybe it's just dead-on right, and the football issues are why the HS BB coaches questioned in the recent article had retroactive amnesia about who the assistant coaches at RU are. It must also have been the reason that, other than one guy who ultimately withdrew his verbal, no other players verballed. They knew that in the future these things were going to happen with RU football. It's also good to know that you have this inside insight on how hard RU's BB coaches were working on recruiting, and that the article and example we read in this thread are just wrong. And the 0-for 2016 recruiting evidence is just wrong too -- or just about football. How's the golf team doing? If they're down, do you think that's also why Eddie signed absolutely no one for 2016?

I guess I'm one of the few people not really bothered that we aren't focusing on NJ. We have zero chance at landing any decent NJ kid, which is why you've seen us recruit kids (and talented ones) from anywhere but NJ during Jordan's tenure. Recruiting won't change that much without a facility change. You guys screaming for Eddie to be fired are being irrational. This is his first real year with a team and not some patchwork job. There are like 7-9 new players or something ridiculous like that. Complain all you want, but that man is getting AT LEAST through Year 4. This year is about progression and improving. Next year is when I start to judge him on wins and losses.

What I highlighted here I agree with. That's what worries me so much. We are headed backwards quickly from being bad to horrendous.

Hey Russ, everyone knows me as Mr. Positive, the guy who is always going to support the current staff and players.

I have a quick question....Rutgers was generating some momentum on the recruiting trail this fall with the Parker commit and scheduled visits with Bashir Ahmad and D. Jenkins in September. The staff worked hard during the summer following some top players and set up official visits. Then, the negative press surrounding football hit the national news. In a matter of 1 month, the two visits were canceled and Parker decommitted. Do you think there was any connection ? My common sense tells me there had to be link, but, I could be wrong.
I don't know much about Amed's recruitment, but I never expected De'riante Jenkins to end up at Rutgers. I did expect him to take all of his visits, but he surprised me. I don't think the football situation had an impact on him he also had a visit scheduled after Rutgers that, of course, he did not take once he committed.

Kwe Parker's recruitment was a mystery to me. The commitment to Rutgers was a head scratcher. Not because Rutgers didn't do a good job recruiting him but because the fit didn't seem that good.

Agree. Until there is a serious commitment to a facilities upgrade, the right coach will not consider us. It doesn't make any sense to make a coaching change until that happens. In the interim, Hobbs needs to have a little talk with EJ.

We need facilities to compete regularly in the B1G, no doubt.

The problem is we offer playing in the B1G and being on TV every game yet our program is at a level of a cellar dweller in a mid major conference.

Who ever that kid is we have no shot and if he does come here he would just transfer as a junior to Florida instead hitting his stride at the school he gave a commitment to. Keep recruiting outside of NJ. When Rutgers gets respectable, (which outside talent thinks we are - somewhat), NJ kids will want to come.

I call BS on the OP too. A kid who thinks Rutgers "stinks" isn't coming here no matter what. Especially if he's a "top" recruit.

Turning around basketball is the real reason we hired Hobbs.

While the FB hire was important - the program can fend for itself - I mean even Flood made a go of having a decent team. Basically most of the 10 or so realistic names listed around here from Ash up to Schiano would do about the same thing in all likelihood (given that we arent pouring resources into the program for any of them.)

But BB needs money. Its needs just the right hire. It needs to get those facilities off the ground immediately. Its what Hobbs will ultimately be judged on.

Totally disagree
Football was headed for the crapper until we got a real coach.

BOTH sports need full support from RU admin.
Like Ash said, we need "Positive Energy"
Basketball surely needs it as well.

What exactly should he say to a guy that's been coaching for 25 years - do better?

The Rutgers job is a very tough one, no doubt. Our problem is that we hired a coach who is possibly the worst fit you can have for this type of job.

Agree...Rutgers "Stinks", but, he is willing to give us a shot just because someone mentions.... "You get to play close to home in front of family and friends"....then, the Mom tells him to listen to some unknown guy's recruiting pitch for Rutgers...........lol

Don't think so.
I offered nothing and notified those who could get the ball rolling.

According to the NCAA, you are a booster if you ever attended a university, bought tickets to sporting events at a university, or donated money to that university. If you are a booster, you are prohibited from contacting any recruitable athlete or their family.

Hence it is a recruiting violation according to the letter of the NCAA law. Is it one that gets broken all the time? Obviously.

How long have you been a Rutgers basketball booster? If you don't realize what you described was totally against NCAA rules then I wouldn't trust your judgment on recruiting very much.

BINGO. I'll take this particular anecdote and anything that Adam Zagoria (aka Bob Hurley's mouthpiece) says with a grain of salt. I am extremely unhappy with the recruiting or lack thereof right now but I have a bigger problem with fans injecting themselves into the recruiting process or claiming to know more than the coaching staff. Probably a good thing that the staff didn't call this kid because then they'd be mixed up in an NCAA violation that the OP created. Imagine if they actually signed the kid and the OP then came on here and dropped this story on us.

I am guessing going in to the locker room after a loss and berating players isn't proper protocol either.

Who did that? A Rutgers AD? I could be wrong, but, I think it would be strange for an AD to interfere during the season like that.

"...In the locker room afterward, coach Gary Waters invited AD and Villanova alumnus Bob Mulcahy to address the team. He opened by telling them he was embarrassed. "He was like, 'For the guys out there who think they're great - everybody (who) thinks they're going to the NBA - I talked to a scout (and) you're all not going to the NBA,' " senior Ricky Shields said. "He was taking personal shots all over the place.
Shields, who's made no secret of his NBA aspirations, also described Rutgers as a team "in crisis.

" Waters said his team is at "rock bottom" and that the RAC remains a huge advantage except that "we were playing so badly it was only keeping us in the games. "I saw it coming," he said. "We've been playing inconsistently for some time. We're 1-6 and should be 4-3.

" Waters had no idea what Mulcahy was going to say. "I thought it was appropriate," he said. "Some might not have taken it that way. . . . With Ricky it was a response to the moment. We talked (Sunday) and he let me know he'd let it go.

" Mulcahy spoke again at a team gathering Monday during which Waters says he did not apologize, but rather tried to clarify earlier remarks. The coach believes this episode could potentially strengthen his team because there has been much more communication the past three days. Of course, there also is the possibility he's lost the ability to direct some of his players; tonight's game may bear that out. "They're ready to play better," he said. "They're tired of it. . . . A win will help.

A grown-up with a brain created THAT rule ?
So they consider me a booster of pretty much every school on the East Coast ?
I've bought a lot of tickets over the years.

And that was our best coach in the past 20 years - good God

Don't forget that Mulcahy also gave a pep talk to the Villanova team prior to that game.

Prior to that game, there were some things about Mulcahy that concerned me. But his actions at that game convinced me that while Mulcahy may have been good for football (mostly because he gave Schiano free rein), he was not a good AD overall.

He got the four concrete pillars in the RAC painted red. Don't say he didn't do good things for the basketball program.
