Reddit CFB board discussing pros and cons of Rutgers vs, Princeton 2019 matchup

It's amazing how many people think that because Rutgers may want a 2019 game with Princeton, that Princeton is just going to go along.
Formally ask them. If they say yes.... great! But it's way more likely you will get a no. Then stop spending time on that and get something else in place. Three years seems like a long time, but for something like the 150th anniversary of college football, it is not.

You're completely missing the logic. Ivy/Patriot schools have occasionally played low level 1A teams and not been annihilated and they're generally better than the MEAC schools we've been playing every year for 10+ years. So, we'll beat them handily, just like we would a MEAC school, putting the 2nd/3rd string in at halftime, and the Princeton players won't all be sent to the hospital, just like the MEAC school players are not.

No reason we can't play Princeton, if we can play Howard - other than Princeton not needing the paycheck and probably not wanting to be blown out...which is why I'm sure there would be a "gentlemen's agreement" for RU to ease off the gas if it does get out of hand.
Please, stop looking at the game based on margin of victory, that is a totally Rutgers' perspective. They eliminated tackling and contact in practices to decrease the likelihood of injuries, especially head injuries, yet some on this site honestly believe that their administration is going to agree to let them play against a P5 program. Not only that, we are talking about 2019, when many of you believe we will have athletes that can compete and beat the likes of OSU and Michigan. OMG, please, let's use common sense. It is not going to happen, move on.

Nonsense. For some of those decades Princeton and the other elite programs of the day, had paid ringers on their teams. Tiny Rutgers was certainly in a different class.

Again, it has nothing to do with the score, it has to do with the direction the Ivy League is taking in football. They are attempting to limit contact and hits, it's all about safety. You can't force, mock or cajole them into playing the game. At the end the day, they will not schedule the game based on the discrepancy in size and athleticism between the two teams and risk of injury to their players.

"Ivy League football coaches have decided to take the extraordinary step of eliminating all full-contact hitting from practices during the regular season, the most aggressive measure yet to combat growing concerns about brain trauma and other injuries in the sport.

The move could influence how other football programs, from the youth level to the professionals, try to mitigate the physical toll of football, which has been played on Ivy League campuses since the 19th century.

The eight Ivy League coaches unanimously approved the measure last week. Their decision is expected to be adopted formally once it is affirmed by the league’s athletic directors, policy committee and university presidents. The new rule would be in addition to the Ivy League’s existing limits on the amount of full contact in practice during the spring and preseason, which are among the most stringent in collegiate football."

You keep missing the point. My only point has been that Princeton would be just as competitive with us as any MEAC school and, hence, fully acceptable for a 1AA game. Do you disagree with that?

I never said Princeton would want to play us, in fact, I've speculated that they would be unlikely to want to play us, since they don't need the $$ (unlike MEAC schools, who really need that payday) and probably don't want to get manhandled. But if they did decide to play us, I think it would be great and it would not be any more brutal for them than it would be for Howard.

I think we probably agree more than disagree. They might very well be as competitive as a MEAC school, but their administration will not schedule the game based on safety concerns, not because they are worried about the final score.

Yet Yale played and beat Army, the same Army that Rutgers Fans don't want us to play anymore due to injuries that might occur to Rutgers players...

Princeton gets nothing out of this game...selfish Rutgers fans wanting to see a beatdown for what, so what they might rise to the level of MEAC schools we play. Move on, its not going to be some incredible atmosphere set up to watch an annihilation on the field so RU fans can get their jollies

It won't be close to psu level, but if you replace Howard with Princeton, it arguably would have the 4th best atmosphere this year.

RU didn't start playing football when you stepped on the banks. There is a lot of institutional memory. Add in the 150 year stuff and the crowd would be into it.

That said, I'd be shocked if it happened.

I like it too. Maybe an exhibition, spring game style. For me the only concern would be injuries - particularly on their side of the ball. The gap between us athletically and physically would worry me in terms of injuries. Perhaps we could give our practice squad kids a shot to shine.

Make it flag football if the Tiggers insist.

Shouldn't you shoot for the best atmosphere for the 150th ann'y game?

Pairing RU and Princeton would be terrible way to celebrate college football and diminish the significance for most CFB fans other than a few here that want to see RU crush them.

Something like a Friday night RU-Mich and Saturday Yale-Princeton "double header" (both at their own home stadiums). With some sort of commemoration, seems more likely.

I think we should shoot for the '86 Giants. Is LT still alive?
