Refs

Guys, Rutgers was up 12 with under ten minutes left in the game, it should never have even gotten to this point.

Even before the traveling calls and double dribbles.

Michigan went on a 17-4 run to take the lead. Rutgers shot the ball like absolute shit. 25% from the field in the 2nd Half and 10% from deep. If I'm Pikiell, I'm telling my guys in the huddle during a timeout to settle down and look for better shots closer to the basket or to attack the rim (possibly draw fouls). They just continued to take too many contested jump shots from beyond mid-range.

Also, Rutgers didnt' play an ounce of defense in this game. It was terrible. The layup lines in the 2nd Half were unreal for Michigan. They finished with 48 points in the paint. YOU CANNOT ALLOW THAT.

The refs are part of the equation but the refs didn't cause an absolute meltdown for a team that was in control and up double figures.

They don't want to have a discussion about that part

“Atlernative reality excuse making”

Um, ok

I acknowledge ALL of the criticisms of pike this season (poor roster construction, not playing the other fresh earlier, substitution and TO patterns, etc etc etc)

Doesn’t change the fact that refs somehow missed two BLATANT walks on that last possession

Saying otherwise is “alternative reality”
That's great. So, despite our own major ineptitude on both offense and defense (those pesky little requirements), we still could have won if the refs didnt screw us. Awesome and yeah for us!!!!!! I am not sure I would want to make that the hill i die on, but lets go with it. If we get better officiating and win the game, how exactly is our season any better? Its not. We dug our own grave and the officiating really hasnt altered that equation at all. You are overly focused on the 8th or 9th biggest problem and ignoring the rest.

if my aunt had balls.....honestly not trying to be an ass, but do you really think the refs are our problem? I see so many MAJOR issues that have impacted our season before officiating. And if you think officiating is the reason we dont make the tournament (or even plays a factor), please lay that out for me. If not, stop the bitching and moaning, because you just proved it isnt overly relevant.

I don’t understand what you are even talking about

Literally NO ONE here is disagreeing that “major issues that have impacted our season before officiating “

Literally no one is saying otherwise sp

You do realize that (1) this program/ team program having major issues that have nothing to do with officiating AND (2) RU getting f’d by the refs last night can BOTH be true?

Again , there is literally no one saying otherwise.

They robbed the game from us last night.

Fact

we are not 14-15 this year because of the refs. that we are not 15-14 is because of the refs.

Your only sentence in this thread that I agree with - well at least the first part

If you actually READ MY POSTS you’ll see I fully acknowledge all the issues with this team\ pike- so I am not ignoring anything

Re “8th or 9th biggest problem “ Actually as far as the season goes - I don’t even include officiating

But last night - it absolutely was A reason.

If you say so.

Yeah, we had a lead built with super hot shooting. We lost it with super cold shooting (and some bad shot selection too). The problems with the team are well understood I think. Net/net we played a good game last night.
Well crunch time matters more than the first 32 minutes because you are running out of time. Can't hit 3fg over 11 minutes

We also lost Ace for 10 minutes on the middle of the half. That impacted his play

so then lets not discuss it at all, right? had no effect on the oucome right?.
You can make excuses all you want. It just comes off as sad. You guys are arguing about something that doesnt move the needle. If the refs affected the outcome of this game, it was well down the list of reasons why we lost (behind little things like offense and defense). And if it was just one game, who cares. That doesnt change anything big picture. And if you think officiating is why our season went off the rails, you are clueless, You guys come off like a bunch of bitches arguing about what song the band is playing while the Titanic sinks. I get all the years of misery, but lets all grow a set of balls and talk honestly about why this season has been a complete bust. Its not the refs

Ok, sure, great. So what does it matter? Refs cost us one game (dont agree, but lets go with it). How is our season impacted in any way? it wasn't. The season has been over for weeks.

Very true. The refs were bad but when it comes down to a one or two possession game, especially on the road, you expose yourself to potentially blown calls. This game should have never come to that point. The wheels fell off in the second half, offensively and defensively. That's what ultimately doomed the team last night.

had we won we move up in the standings and if we won our final 2 had a reasonable chance at a 1st round bye in the tournament.

not to mention what this game did our team morale which would have been sky high had we won

yes it mattered. A lot.

What point are you trying to make here? That only things directly related to how our season is going as a whole should be discussed?

If that’s the case then you should go ahead make this same point in 95% of the threads on this message board.

I get all that. But ultimately, none of it actually matters in the big picture. We (Pike) dug our own grave this year. Refs had no tangible impact on that IMO.

100%, refs sucked also and ripped us off but Dylan’s defense on last play sucked too
It's not lackadaisical. What's a better strategy, double team Wolf on the dribble if he drives, or stand 35 feet from the basket to defend a Steph curry 3. Has to account for the potential that Wolf would take the final shot with Ace guarding him.

I don't know why your message board handle bothers me so much with these taeks...but it does.

I want my insider to actually be a knowledgeable bball poster I suppose.

Do we understand how basketball works? Teams go on runs. Michigan turned up their defensive pressure and our best players looked gassed out there because of it. Credit to Michigan and it's why they are a top team in the conference.

Tell them to settle down and attack the rim. Amazing stuff I'm sure nothing like that was said in the huddle.

Totally disagree about ounce of defense. 11 steals doesn't happen without a ton of defensive effort. Tons of full court pressure with Ace and Dylan both spending a ton of effort to bother Mich. But trying to stop two seven footers with the lineup we are putting out there is a tough ask and it's going to lead to points in the paint. We also exploited those matchups on the offense end with our speed an athleticism.

And with the bad stretch in the second half the team did enough to win. It was snatched from them by two missed calls and a shot from the parking lot.

I don't think it's unreasonable to be very disappointed about the season while also standing up and applauding that effort and being proud of the team/bitterly upset about the loss.

You realize it can be both?

It’s entirely possible that ALL of the following occurred (and more)

  • Pike shit the bed in many ways
  • Our defense sucked all game
  • We missed many wide open shots in the second half AND
  • The refs did not call an even game and missed two obvious traveling violations in the last few seconds which directly affected the game
These are not mutually exclusive things . You understand that?
Of course they can all be true, I just think the ref complaints are exaggerations. There were things that were let go in both directions. Teams that get the ball in the post typically draw more fouls. Was the reffing a little inconsistent, yes, but I don't think it was drastically more in favor of one or the other.

More about people being too fixated on the impact of the officiating last night in 1 game, while there were so many other more important reasons why we lost. The reasons we lost last night has nothing to do with officiating, and the reasons our season went off the rails has nothing to do with officiating. I am not suggesting you are saying that, but I just find it typical Rutgers that people are so fixed on the minutia over the bigger issues. That's all

Everyone knows that the totality of the game is what matters. It doesn't take BS experts to tell us that. But if you really love RU, why the constant defense of the refs who clearly screwed us ,just like they did in that out of bounds play at Ohio State. Some of these BS experts won't even allow loyal RU fans to lick our wounds. Always bashing the coaches the players , the poorly shoveled sidewalks. -- you name it ,yet never even remotely defending RU.Guess what you don't look smarter or more informed ,just pompous j offs

Because the officiating evens out over time and is excuse making for people with loser mentality. As if your 'please give me time to lick my wounds' mentality. At best, the refs were the 5th or 6th biggest reason why we lost last night. But keep harping on it.

You cannot blame losing a game you allowed the other team to shoot 55%, get outrebounded by more than 10, give up 48 points in the paint, ect on the refs. Did they make some weird calls, sure. Did they miss some, sure. Both ways.

When you have the lead and they blow two blatant calls in the last 6 seconds you can most certainly blame the refs for this game. This isn’t even mentioning the two cylinder calls they pulled out of their @ss which are virtually never called.

You act like we didn’t play very well for a large majority of the game.

Did you even watch it?

??? What does this mean? When did we lose Ace for 10 minutes?
I mean his teammates failed to pass him the ball when he was calling for it and in scoring position both inside and on the perimeter for an extended period. In the middle of that, during a stoppage i have my one post in the game thread calling for an out of bounds play for Ace

Bullshyt , another genius, bad calls never exactly "even" out. When they occur , the kind of call--- there's hundreds of variables. Excuses my ass. Loser mentality --youre the loser for making excuses for refs that fuk up.

Watched it all. We played well offensively for 20 minutes. Defensively for about 5. If blaming the refs makes you feel better, have at it, but its not why RU lost.

When you’re up 1 with seconds to play and two blatant missed calls each of which would have put the ball back in our hands, you could easily say it’s why we lost (along with other reasons, of course).
