RIP Alex Kroll

Alex Kroll had starred at Yale and then enlisted in the army. According to the October 27, 1960 Targum, “Kroll met Art Robinson, co-captain of the 1956 Knights and 150 lb. grid mentor. ‘I was set to enroll at Houston University but he (Robinson) convinced me to come to New Brunswick, and I haven’t regretted the decision.’” Kroll was captain of the undefeated 1961 team and played on the previous year’s 8-1 squad. He made all seven All-America Teams in 1961 and played in the North-South Game and Senior Bowl and then spent the 1962 season with the New York Titans (aka Jets). He was taken in the 1962 AFL Draft by the Titans (Jets) with the 13th pick).

Titans owner Harry Wismer said, “We’ve got the highest average priced team in the league and this contract isn’t pulling the average down.” After that he joined Young & Rubicam where he rose from copywriter to chairman of the world’s largest advertising agency. He still held the title of Chairman Emeritus until his death on December 17, 2024. He is in the College Football Hall of Fame and the Advertising Hall of Fame.

Two days after Rutgers completed its first undefeated season, more good news came in the November 27, 1961 Daily Home News, “Captain Alex Kroll of Rutgers is one of eight senior lineman named winners of the annual Scholar-Athlete Award by the National Football Foundation and Hall of Fame… The presentation will be made at the annual Awards Dinner of the foundation here (New York) Dec. 5 at which time President John F. Kennedy will receive the Gold Medal Award. Kroll is a Phi Beta Kappa with an average of over 92 per cent in advanced English studies.”

Besides Homer “Pop” Hazel (1951), coaches George Foster Sanford (1971) and Harvey Harman (1981), end Paul Robeson (1995), and center Alex Kroll (1997) are the other Rutgers inductees in the National College Football Hall of Fame.

Thanks for posting. An Alex Kroll statue would be fitting.
I remember seeing an Alex Kroll exhibit at the original College Football Hall of Fame in South Bend.
Rutgers was playing at Notre Dame in 1996 (last game before their stadium renovation).

Was there any business and athletic connections between Kroll and Sonny Werblin?
There actually was some “business” (as Ben Drieth would say) between him and a professor at Yale.

And we are better for it.

I remember when RU was undefeated in the 1961 season and he was honored on the Ed Sullivan show with all of the first team All Americans. He was one outstanding person as well as a great football player.

We haven't heard enough from the University on this. He should be honored at halftime of our season opener.
