Former NFL head coach and influential defensive coordinator Buddy Ryan has died, agent James Solano confirmed Tuesday. He was 82.

Ryan, who coached in the NFL for 35 seasons, was known for building some of football's top defenses behind a relentlessness that focused on creating havoc on the field.

He was on the defensive staff of the Super Bowl-winning New York Jets in Super Bowl III in 1968. The Chicago Bears carried Ryan off the field next to coach Mike Ditka after Ryan's vaunted "46 Defense" helped the Bears destroy the New England Patriots 46-10 in Super Bowl XX.

He later was head coach of the Philadelphia Eagles and Arizona Cardinals and finished his career with a 55-55-1 coaching record. His son, Rex, was on his dad's staff for two years with the Cardinals in the 1990s.

I was little boy in the 1980s. Grew up a Giant fan because of my old man, but Buddy Ryan and his Eagles made me a football fan.

Love the no nonsense, in your face, we are coming after you attitude

HOLY CRAP!!!!! TWO LEGENDARY COACHES DIED TODAY...

R.I.P. Coach Pat Summit.

R.I.P. Coach Buddy Ryan. He was a game changer in the way defenses played in the NFL, College, HS, Youth Ball. I even used a simplified version of his defense for my youth teams back in the day. He didn't gave a damm what you think of him or his players. As a Giants fan, I damm sure respect him.

My ex was a giants fan and we had season tickets for the Iggs when we lived in south jersey .We went to a Phillies opening day game and got into a private elevator somehow and Buddy got on. He was shorter than her , Irish red faced from having a few pops at the bar and dropped some Kentucky charm on her . She became a Buddy fan at that moment..A frigging defensive genius and like his sons and Schiano never quite understood that you need an offensive too to win consistently..Except for one-year with da Bears.

Ryan told Cunningham all he had to do was make 5 good plays a game and they would win. That's the confidence he had in his defense.

The 1991 Eagles had one of the best Defenses of all time, but a horrible offense because Cunningham tore up his knee in the first game of the season. They then started a washed up Jim McMahon for most of the season plus a couple of games starting Jeff Kemp and Brad Goebel. If Randall stays healthy, they have a chance, but would still have to get by a very good Washington team that won it all.

Great coach. RIP. Hated the eagles. Especially when they had Reggio white destroy the giants ground game....by himself. Ryan revolutionsed the game and all he needed was a 6 pack. Lol. He will be missed. Thank god the Eagles didn't win a super bowl though. Go Giants.
