Said the same thing last year around this time.

If the season is over then need to play for next year.

Dylan, Davis, Ace, Grant Lathan

Dortch and Derkack off the bench
Try and get a sense if JWill is returning or not.

Martini, Acuff and Hayes are gone next year.
They can fill in for foul trouble.

Is this a winning strategy for this year?
Not even close.
But the staff is responsible for the program year over year - not just this year's team.
At some point you have to rip the bandaid off and face the reality.

As Herm Edwards once said “ You play to win the game “ !

At this point , Pike and Staff doesn’t want the ultimate embarrassment of not making the BIg 10 Tourney!

Pike and Staff and rightfully so will play the guys who they feel give them the best chance to win the game !

Rutgers doesn't want to lose every game by 20 points.I doubt many fans would attend the final two home games if Bailey and Harper weren't playing.
If Dylan is going to carry himself like he did yesterday we are much better off with him staying home.

We win last night if Ace and Dylan stayed in their dorms.

I know we don't like +/- but both were -16s

This is some serious spin. We win last night’s game without Harper and Ace? I’ve seen this team without one of these guys. I can’t imagine how we’d play without both

We played our best basketball when Ace and Dylan were both on the bench last night.

Now I’m sure that’s a total outlier but Ace and Dylan probably played some of their worst basketball last night.

those two played about 30 minutes last night. I don’t know how long both were on the bench at the same time, but I assume it’s a pretty small sample size. People continue to want to rag on Dylan and Ace. But again, we came into this season completely failing to grab a portal 5 and 4 that can compete at this level. It all trickles down from there. I’m sure DH and Ace (along with the rest of the team) are frustrated a bit because of the losing this year. They know they are shorthanded and it’s not going to get better. After 20+ games, it’s up to coach to keep it together

Do you really want JWill to return?

Me? Not in the least.
But I would have never recruited him in the first place.
JWill, Derkack and Davis wouldn’t be near my team because they aren’t close to being effective in the offensive system I’d want (prioritize movement and 3pt shooting)

But he appears to fit HC Pike so he might be back.

jamike played 12 minutes. We were better last night with him playing hard on both ends.

Harper playing like he was last night is the C word. Terrible for morale.

This is silly talk. Benching top NBA draft picks in favor of a rag tag rotation of hacks will guarantee no player with NBA aspirations will ever come here again.

Lost in this debate is the fact that Pike has to bend over backwards to keep these two happy. He’s got nothing more important to pitch to recruits than the positive experience of Harper and Bailey

How does Pike recruit NBA talent going forward, when he can't win with two top 5 NBA draft prospects on his team?

Agreed with the sentiment of the coach needing to keep it together. That second half was a display of a coach not keeping his team together, they played with no energy or fight or resistance. Meanwhile, we saw such a stark contrast from Iowa and McCaffery as Iowa has been hit with injuries, not having a great year, and they were down double digits to us. And yet, they responded to their coaches message and competed. McCaffery nearly broke down in tears on the court with Katz in the postgame because of how proud he was of his team. That is a coach keeping it together.

The last paragraph, how’s that working out for them. I personally want Grant Lathan and Dortch back at all costs. Granted you don’t know if they will come back but one sure way to drive them away is to bench them.

Not True.Rutgers couldn't stop Iowa from making layups or 3 pointers. On offense Rutgers would need to score a additional 36 points to win the game without the 24 points from Bailey and Harper.Next season the team will be lucky to score 60 points unless some shooters are recruited from the transfer portal.

They better be shooters who can make with heat in their face because we won’t be running any sets to get them open lol

how many point did Acuff and JaMike score? In how many minutes?

Does it ever occur to you that maybe some of the role players have good scoring nights because teams are zeroed in on DH and Ace? Again, the roster construction of this team is flawed. It’s very very flawed

No. You try to win until it’s actually 100% over which would mean 1 more loss

Then you still mostly try to win but you can shift a little bit towards developing for next year.

The lineup sucked last night at one point he had Martini as the tallest guy with no one else taller than 6'5" he continues to play Grant the first 3 minutes especially when he came off his best game and give us rebounding and size; and Dortch also while very limited offensively grabs a lot of boards for the time he is in

Roster is flawed....issues arent offense it is defense.

We played approximately 16 possessions with no Ace or Dylan and were +10 in that time

Disagree about Dortch....hasn't shown anything besides being one of the taller players. His role now is only to be a warm body on the court when we have foul trouble. IIRC, no points in how many games ?

He'll have no P4 takers in the portal for sure. Different role than Chol would have had, but less scoring and overall talent than even him. If he portals down, not a loss at all.

You’re certainly entitled to your opinion, and I see your point, I just feel with the injury to EO he’s being asked to play out of position. I saw him as a McConnell replacement eventually. A wing defender with length. Want to get back to that. Of course that counts on Pike developing him as such and this year his usage was terrible. We can’t keep letting everyone portal out or down. Simpson and Wolf would have helped this year. We would never have had 2019-22 without kids sticking around, growing and developing.

McConnell was a good on-ball defender and rebounder. Dortch seems not to understand basic boxing out, always on the wrong side of his man. Shelby sees nothing in him beyond being a warm body with fouls-to-give.

Painting a grim picture. Does Shelby see a winning record in the next 2-3 years?

We’re not winning with them on the bench not playing at all. Which is what was originally brought up. They’re the team’s leading scorers and rebounder.

Dortch has played 43 minutes without scoring a single point.
You’ve seen him shoot, i don’t see any coach turning him into a viable offensive player
exactly. and his defense isn't any better. warm body, that's it.

We still don't have a line up configuration that includes the four main freshman that hasn't been outscored by the opponents. We've played like 77 minutes with Ace, Dylan, Grant, and Lathan and have been outscored in all 5 lineups that included just one non freshman.

basketball maybe. Shelby isn't convinced it's hopeless. Pike struck out this year but might turn things around with a better portal haul next year.

football no. Schiano's once-every-20 year easy schedule tailwind and 7-5 season comes crashing back to earth having to play some of the best teams. It will be interesting to see how he manages gets yet another raise and extension.

I'm still giving Dylan the benefit of the doubt about getting hurt somewhat midway through the 1st half when he landed badly after a drive to the hoop. I don't think he'll throw in the towel re: attitude for RU. Maybe he'll play "cautiously" if he does tweak or hurt something. Ace still has ups and downs because we rely so much on him making contested deep shots. Pike has to run screens to get him more pick and pops around the foul line.
