RU Econ Prof Killingsworth Op-Ed in NJcom

Huh. Guy is a douche, but have to agree with just about everything in that article.

Key info in the article - most fans of other B1G school donate $30-35m to the sports programs, but RU giving is only $8m. To be a serious player in the B1G, this gap has to close.

Like him or not, from strictly an Economics viewpoint (and yes, I am an Econ major, RC 1975, before Killingsworth, lol), his points are on .....well, point.

I didn't say he was wrong. That's what you'd expect him to say
I never thought I would agree with anything that Killingsworth has to say, but this piece is spot on. The necessary increase in funding for athletics must come from donors, not the university

Just look at the gofundme account that setup...pretty bad!

We all need to do our part

We all know this. The key question is, does it start with leadership and commitment from Rutgers, or does Rutgers expect Donors to just lead and fund everything?

I agree somewhat....relatively speaking we are probably the richest state in the Big Ten (behind Maryland).

I think this a a Chicken or Egg Scenario. Remember GS asked for Half of a new stadium before there was really demand? You do need a little initial push from financing.

While I did not read the article (I don't click on opinion pieces from this rag), athletic donations in 2014-15 increased to $14.7M, from $8.1M in 2013-14. The poster above who is claiming most B1G schools have donations of $30M - $35M is wrong. In fiscal year 2013-14, 3 schools had donations in that range - Wisconsin, Michigan and Iowa. Penn State and NW did not provide data, thus, it's possible 5 schools had donations $30M or greater. Ohio State and Michigan State fell short of $30M. Half of the conference fell way short of $30M.

As the years go on, TV revenue will even out with the rest of the Conference and hopefully the school will invest in athletics. Donors, especially, the larger donors, will donate when football is run correctly and the results show on the field. A significant investment in a highly competent coaching staff goes a long way toward better recruiting, player development and wins. Until such time, we saw a substantial donation increase playing in the B1G our first year and we'll find out how the results of having a terrible season this year affect donations, especially the larger donors.

For those of you who don't want to click on a NJ.Com article, I can summarize it in 2 words: WE'RE SCREWED!

Terrific piece. Not just blasting the subsidy, not just ripping the "big-time" mentality, but telling both Rutgers fans to kick in more and the Rutgers boards to find ways to raise money FOR ATHLETICS.

Hey, it's nice if in the year since those numbers were reported we've increased donations. Great. But we're still lagging almost everyone, and many by A LOT. And Killingsworth also points a finger at the BOT and BOG. So I think he's a very reasonable guy, not someone just spewing anti-football rhetoric (which also can be a valid point, although not one with which I agree).

Good piece. Just kick in a few bucks once in a while. It adds up.

We raised 8k in 2 days for a fire flood...they took it down because they didnt want to be attached to that movement with the coach under contract and still coaching games...what i think is we should have kept it up and just changed the title and say we r raising funds for Rutgers Football... Let it sit for a couple months and i think would have raised a lot more money...granted a many donated but more didnt because it was for a negative cause...granted we can all donate at any time but something like that would be fun for the fans to band together and watch their cause grow

While a lot of what he said was true, his unnecessary snide comment about the basketball team is enough to show you what a dbag this guy is.

He is no friend of Atheltics and has a clear agenda.

Yes Rutgers needs its alumni base to wake up and start giving but we also need an administration that has balls, trust and vision and isn't worried about hurting the feelings of the type of professor that wrote this article.

What that tells me is that RU knew all along it couldn't afford to compete in the Big10 and was/is only interested in the bigger paycheck.

By the time RU reaches the donation levels the others are at now, those others will be even farther ahead.

Yes, the problem is you - the 150 or so caustic, disrespectful posters on this board that shape the impression that RU athletics are a joke or worse. I never post what I really think about players and coaches performing badly because I know that would only make me fell better short term, but hurt the school long term. Besides, it happens all the time. Pointing out a flaw in sports does not make you astute or a sophisticated observer. And no, your embarrassing, dumb ass, cheap skate financial strategies will not do it. The joke impression you people create is what keeps the larger population from getting behind the school. You are the fuel that the Negative media survives on.You would all have to bite your tounges and say something positive or nothing at all when things get tough. Nick-naming Flood Fudd does nothing, really.

get over yourself

I'm motivated to make another donation. We need to vote with our wallets. But I also think that RU AD needs to get more aggressive with their fundraising. Maybe they need Killingsworh to sign on as an advisor!

Meh

RU averaged 22-24k fans at games just before GS. Then McCormick, Bob M and GS worked together to infuse program with energy and vision. Ticket sales went up over 20% a year for like 8 years. Then Bob M got fired for nothing much. GS and McCormick departures followed. Pres Barky, Ms Doubtfire and Flood now hold command - the commitment and fire are gone - so are the fans. Really don't want to read the fans have to pay more to have decent sports when the program is run by people who seem half-hearted. Nobody would say "We'll have a popular college when students and parents decide to pay more". You fix the college first.

He was on Fios Channel 1 a couple weeks ago, and I gained an appreciation for him. He is a big sports fan, has NO problem with Rutgers playing in the Big Ten and hopes we become competitive. His problem is the subsidy, and frankly, we should all be concerned with the subsidy.

That being said, he's using figures from our last year in the AAC when we had something like 3000 donors. I know I'm giving 3 times what I gave in 2013, the number of donors has increased by several factors, and Rutgers has found several ways to monetize football. When the numbers for 2014 are released, a lot of these criticisms will be quieted.

"And if you claim you'd contribute, but only if the team wins first, then you don't deserve to be called a fan."
Completely and entirely agree.

"Instead, they, and the presidents they have appointed, have taken ever-increasing amounts of money from academics without ever achieving anything serious for athletics."
Dead wrong. HPSS+Expansion = B1G invite. I'd call that something serious. We're a B1G school, as he's happy to say as his main point. That's something serious achieved for athletics.

His other points are meh to me. Those two stood out.

You would think that Killingsworth would be one of our biggest represantives out there beating the pavement for donors. He keeps complaining about the donor base but I don't see him doing anything to help build it.

He keeps talking about we need more donors and more donor money over subsidies, well what are you doing to help that cause?

Yeah, but OSU could raise $8MM in 2 minutes without making a phone call or any other public appeal, as their boosters would be calling the AD to make the coaching change happen. Article was spot on.

It's unrealistic to expect fans to donate huge amounts of money to a football program that doesn't give them much in return. Maybe it's not fair to demand the team win a lot before donating but it's NOT too much to ask that the team ENTERTAIN fans. Here is yet another place where our dull ass offense hurts us. You can lose and still give fans some excitement and something to latch onto with pride like a cutting edge offense or you can lose boring with an offense that doesn't score and has rbs hitting the pile again and again.

I don't need a grad degree in mathematics to tell you RU needs more donations from alumni.

Who is this dolt?

Speaking of mathematics and economics what is the sum of this equation since it is very relevant...
5 & 7 = uummmm uuuhhhhh hhhhhmmmmm..............

So we should have seen a spike in donations after 2006. Instead we got Richie Rutgers complaining that he should keep his 50-yard-line seats and Scarlet parking without donating because he bought a $20 ticket to watch Temple in the rain.
