RU Lax - BIG Coaches Poll

That's fair, considering where we ended last season.

In reality though, I get Maryland. They lost a lot, but they return a few very good players that are difference makers, especially that middie they have.

OSU I think gets a nod to how they finished 17, but they lost a lot. They have some incoming talent for sure, but I wouldn't be surprised to see them finish 3 4 or 5.

Good. I like us there. I'll keep saying it:

These guys need to be PISSED THE **** OFF from minute 1 to the final minute of the final regular season game, then do the same in the B1G, then again in the NCAA's. Time to prove that we got douched at least 1 of the last 2 seasons and get the ****ing GORILLA off our backs.

I'd like to keep that chip on the back of our shoulder, but anger can't get you through a long season. We need to continue working on execution in the half field, getting better at the x, and focus on improving day by day.

As the season goes on, I'd like to see us continue to get better. Our preseason was short. I am guessing that is to keep trending upward as the season goes on.

The guys are jacked and ready to go. Losing AC hurt. It's going to take a little time to pick up the slack from the production of that position.

I can't believe I am typing it, but that 17 year old kid Coyne from high school is going to see some action. Pretty crazy to think about, considering he was in high school a month ago.

Is this our best shot at our first Big Ten title?
Damn right lookIng at the spring ... still have a little faith in WBB in the tourney, but if I bet the mortgage, this is the team

Funny -- immediately after last season, the Terrapins were described as rebuilding and generally ranked 8-12 in most projections and estimates for 2017-18. Somehow they've gradually risen since then, to where they are now picked as #1 by many polls without even playing a game.

I'll believe it when I see it. They lost a lot. I think a #5 at best pre-season rank is more in order...

Not just BIG, but national title. Said it a few times, lax has benefited more than any other sport with BIG invite. Big East was actually pretty strong for most Olympic sports, obviously WBB was elite. Wrestling has seen an uptick, but the sport is dominated by a few schools and it's difficult to win a BIG or NCAA title. Lax jumped up pretty quickly and BIG established itself as a strong conference almost immediately. Sport is unpredictable and blue blood programs will still get most of the talent but, like hockey, the sport is growing and more kids are playing. Provides RU with a great opportunity.

I’m just sayin’...;)

I think Wrestling is by far the biggest beneficiary of the B1G move, but Lax has benefitted as well. I also think Brecht has just done a good job of building the program from the ground up with his vision. It took a long time, but his foundation has finally taken root

I would agree with that. All of a sudden the home university in a wrestling-rich state is part of the most important club in NCAA wrestling -- The B1G. Kids who are good enough to compete at the highest level can now stay home and not miss out on the B1G opportunity.

And please remember this was done with less money (for now) and lesser facilities (for now) than the competition (B1G and other Lacrosse programs).

Imagine what this guy can do with a bigger budget, a designated facility AND continued success.

You may be right. Without BIG invite, wrestling could have been dropped. But program is way behind the major players, and catching up is really tough, especially with such dominant BIG programs.

Bigger budget and facility will help, but wrestling isn't growing like Lax. There are only so many truly elite wrestlers in each weight class and other programs are getting most of them. Aren't many diamonds in the rough for that sport.

All true. But was just talking about lacrosse.

And while I agree with you with regard to Wrestling we are behind I don’t know if we are way behind. Small steps.

My bad, I thought you were referencing wrestling. With upgrades, lax will be on par with any program. I would think lax and both soccer programs are the only ones without inherent disadvantages

Yep.

But was referring to Wrestling about being way behind. Agree we are behind but not sure about the way anymore. That’s what I meant by baby steps.

Women's soccer. They have been banging on the door. Big final 2 of last 3 years. Ton of returnees & good incoming class.

Any sense how Coyne compares with Mullins who made a big initial splash last year?
Not really the same, Mullins spent a year at West Point Prep and then came so he was an old freshman while Coyne is young (17 I think). while in HS Mullins won the Enners award and the Bob Scott award, very big deal on Long Island. When I saw Mullins play last year I knew he was going to be special and I think it is unfair to compare him and Coyne. That being said Coyne is a tall good sized athlete who can run and plays with some swaggger. i would not be surprised to see him playing middie as I think he has the physical ability to handle it.

From the guys I have spoken to, they are very impressed with Coyne.

As Fam said, it's unfair to compare him to Mullins. Mullins had a very special freshman campaign.

That said, Coyne is getting some serious hype on the team. The term I keep hearing used is that he is "nasty". And that's a good thing.

I have definitely heard that he is nasty and Brecht is looking of ways to get him and Gallagher on the field. I stood next to Peterson on Saturday and that kid is every bit of 6'3". I heard the he is a bit nicked up as well or he might also be in the mix.

I could not make it but the big news of the day was that they are going to start building the new facility this spring. shovels in the ground and the completion date is still summer 2019. the location will be in between the bubble and Yurchak field, right next to the soccer practice fields. So all of the hard work put in by Hobbs and his staff in fundraising has been paying off especially the Matching gift fundraiser that raised 1/2 a million dollars in addition to the 1 million dollar pledge by a former lacrosse player.

Meh. Defending national champion that's been to nine of the last 13 Final Fours, won 11 conference championships in 17 years, and spent more time at #1 than pretty much anyone else in recent years will get you the benefit of the doubt. All that stuff will work its way out as the season unfolds.

Your not looking at the club wrestling aspect with this analysis. That's where you get the workout partners for these kids. That's where the big difference is. I think nittany lions wrestling club spends something ridiculous like $2 mil. a year and is an Olympic regional training center.

Scarlet Knight wrestling club only has a 100k to 200k budget. The more that grows the more kids will want to stay in RU's room. It all comes down to money, the more you have, the more resident athletes you can afford. This is where my wife and I have diverted some of our donations. Improve this club, you'll improve the quality of recruits.
