RU Marching Band 100th Anniversary game!

This weekend, the Marching Band is celebrating its 100th anniversary. There is a nice alumni event tonight to coincide with rehearsal, and then tomorrow we have a special halftime show! Thank you again to everyone who helped out with our fantastic new uniforms, and be sure to catch tomorrow's show featuring the alumni band! Can't wait to celebrate 100 years!!

We will not, that never-before-done show was to celebrate the new Star Wars episode coming to theaters this December, but we will be performing a new halftime show for every game for the rest of the season! Here is tomorrow's schedule:

9:30 - Scarlet Walk performance
9:55 - Drumline Block R Party Peformance
11:30 - Pregame show
Halftime - 100th anniversary show

The September 29, 1976 Targum reported, “The Marching 100 began in 1915 affiliated with the ROTC. Uniforms resembled the garb of the American Revolutionary War with cocked hats and a double sash crossed over a bodice.” The October 29, 1922 Daily Home News said, “The uniform of the band is scarlet sweaters, white flannel trousers and white duck sailer hats. The top piece was only decided upon this fall and when in formation in parade dress, they help make the sign an inspiring one.” In 1968, the Rutgers “Marching 100” appeared at Giants and Jets games broadcast on CBS and NBC, the East-West Shrine Game broadcast on ABC, the Rose Bowl where they represented Rutgers for the upcoming 100th anniversary year of college football and finished with a special concert at Disneyland. Rutgers President Mason Gross back in 1968 said, “…blossoming into a first class band has been about the most striking event of the fall.”

The band has only given us positive PR. They played at last year's Heisman Trophy ceremony, and they appear in the CBS sports college football opening show sequence every Saturday. Of course, they also appeared in the SuperBowl pregame show, Jimmy Fallon show, Victoria's Secret Fashion show, etc. They are the Pride of New Jersey!

The band made its 1915 appearance on October 16, 1915 at the Muhlenberg College - Rutgers College game when they played between quarters.
Rutgers won 21-0 before a record setting crowd at Neilson Field estimated to be between 4,000-5,000.

According to a retrospect in the September 7, 1967 Targum, Rutgers President William Demarest formed the ROTC band in 1915 but it didn’t appear continuously at football games until 1920. He commented, “It’s bound to be an improvement over the Fife and Drum Corps.”

I'm wondering why so many band alumni aren't attending.

Money money money. Tickets to the tailgate were $65 each and then we needed football to tickets- so I spent serious money plus traveled from DC for this. I am willing to bet that this was a prohibitive factor.... Plus they hit many of us up for uniform money several times this year. By contast, I was invited to the varsity letter winner tailgate and it was $15 for guests and free for me!

Little known fact. Star Wars music originated with the Rutgers marching band in 1925. Lucas adopted it for the movies and named the movies based on the song title in the 1970s.
