RU Pitcher earns B1G Freshman of the Week honors

I wish we could have gotten the kid from my local HS here in Ocean City, Sean Mooney.. He ended up at St Johns and is one of the top Sophomore pitchers in the country



As a Freshman (2017):
BIG EAST Pitcher of the Year and Freshman of the Year, only the second player in league history to garner both awards simultaneously… selected to USA Baseball's Collegiate National Team... a Collegiate Baseball Third Team All-American… National Collegiate Baseball Writers Assocation (NCBWA) Third Team All-American... ABCA/Rawlings Third Team All-American... recognized as the National Freshman Pitcher of the Year by Collegiate Baseball and the NCBWA… a finalist for the College Baseball Foundation’s National Pitcher of the Year Award… ABCA/Rawlings First Team All-Region... named a Freshman All-American by Collegiate Baseball, the NCBWA, Baseball America, Perfect Game and D1Baseball... a two-time BIG EAST Pitcher of the Week and a six-time selection to the BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll… ranked in the top 10 nationally in both ERA (1.71) and WHIP (0.86)… complied an 8-2 record, including an 8-0 mark to start his career (1.10 ERA) before suffering a pair of setbacks in the postseason… struck out 88 batters with just 16 walks…. tossed 100.0 innings, the fourth-highest single-season total in program history… went seven innings or longer in nine of his 13 starts, including six outings of eight innings or longer and one complete game shutout… tallied an opponent batting average of just .196… exploded onto the scene in his first appearance as a member of the Red Storm, striking out seven 3.0 innings of no-hit relief against James Madison in Myrtle Beach (Feb. 18)… struck out two in 1.2 frames of shutout relief against Kansas State (Feb. 24)… played a key role in the Red Storm’s win over then-No. 7 North Carolina, striking out four in as many innings of relief against the Tar Heels at Boshamer Stadium, surrendering two earned runs (March 1)… made his first career start in stellar fashion at Liberty, striking out 10 in five frames while allowing no runs and surrendering just three hits and a walk (March 10)… allowed just one run and three hits in eight innings of work, striking out six and picking up his first collegiate win against Iona in Norfolk, Va. (March 17)… tallied the first complete game shutout by a Red Storm pitcher since 2015, allowing four hits and no walks over nine innings of work against Maine (March 25)… fanned seven in as many innings, allowing just one run and four hits to pick up his third-straight win against Hofstra (April 1)… struck out five in seven innings en route to a no decision at Creighton (April 7)… surrendered just one earned run and struck out seven in eight innings against Butler en route to his second-straight no decision (April 13)… got back in the win column against Fairleigh Dickinson, allowing just two hits and a walk over eight shutout frames (April 22)… struck out six in seven innings, allowing one run and improving to 5-0 against Seton Hall (April 28)… surrendered one run on three hits while striking out six a half-dozen at Georgetown (May 5)… registered his second double-digit strikeout game of the year, punching out 10 and walking none over 8.1 frames of work against Xavier (May 12)… tossed six shutout innings to improve to 8-0 on the year against Villanova (May 18)… suffered his first loss of the year in the BIG EAST Tournament opener against Xavier, allowing two earned runs over six innings of work (May 25)… failed to reach the five-inning plateau in a start for the first time in the first game of the Clemson Regional, picking up the loss against Vanderbilt (June 2).

At Ocean City High School:
A four-year letterwinner and two-year captain for the Red Raiders… played third and first base in addition to pitching… a two-time Second Team All-State selection, two-time All-South Jersey pick and three-time Cape Atlantic League All-Star… named the Courier Post Pitcher of the Year and a Max Preps Medium School All-American in 2016… finished his senior season with a 9-1 record with a 0.63 ERA, recording 102 strikeouts and surrendering just 11 walks… led the Red Raiders to a South Jersey Championship in 2016 and Cape Atlantic League Championships in 2013 and 2016.
