RU vs Maryland Game thread 12/14/20

bac I agree that we lost and the defense wasn't good enough; that being said--you only have to go back to 2018 to find the last time RU beat MD (and it was @md). And as for top 25, team beat Iowa on last game of regular season last year.

I'm not going to argue that we've gotten the results we wanted against MD and other top 25 teams, but to say that it never happens is a bit of overkill.

Look--the team had a chance to win, they couldn't pull it off; but with it only be game 3 of the season, I'm hopeful they can learn a lot from his moving forward.

RU is 1-9 vs Maryland since joining the Big 10, today was actually the closest loss, every other loss by double digits. RU won in 2018 73-65

We all can feel bad about that 1-9 record.
But still can believe the RU WBB program is going to be a good one this year.
Finding fault sometimes is easier ( for some) then looking on the bright side in which some ( me) might overburden this board with messages that imp[y stay positive , even after a loss like this.

Wow. Unranked RU plays toe-to-toe with perennially ranked Maryland to the final seconds and all a couple of posters can do is dump on the team and coach. Just how miserable are your lives?

I didn't watch or listen to the game. I only saw the results when I tuned into the Rutgers men' s BB team. When I saw the score, I couldn't believe the end result was 91-87. Obviously not a defensive game--LOL! But, wow, we went toe to toe with the #14 team in the country and nearly pulled it out. I have nothing to say except I'm PROUD OF THE LADIES. Have them take this loss as a measurable, and go forward and kick some a$$ in the B1G. They can do it.

This is not the reason we lost, but losing the heart of our team, and the very likely B10 defensive player of the year, 5 min into the game, was a huge blow. The fact that Diamond Johnson played 31min, and Erica Lafayette played 20, three games into their RU career against a top team and it was close the whole way is valuable experience.

As CVS said, "When we needed to take control and guarantee ourselves a shot, it came down to execution and experience," said head coach C. Vivian Stringer. "We asked two true freshmen to step in and do the job, and they have done a fantastic job. We just didn't finish the plan and the problem was inexperience in this situation. There were just a few times we got disoriented, and that was enough for them to hit shots, and we didn't."

A couple other notes:

Good to see Mael get going offensively; she'll be more important than ever now.
As expected, Arella did not let her awful shooting performance against Wisconsin get her down.
Diamond, as we all know, is for real.
Zippy, as promised, is much improved.

Zippy's development this year is important because it was a big concern I had from last season.

This team appears to have many more options offensively this season but the defense has work to do.

The D didn't look in top form against Maryland, but in defense of that letdown: the Terps are a high scoring team and one hard one to keep the score down when playing them.
They scored 115 in their victory over a top 20 (12) Arkansas team

What about Liz Martino I know she only took 1 3 pointer and hit it but she looks like she has a nice shot;

if I trust CVS for anything, it's that she can manage a problem like "the defense has work to do"

Rich--I was surprised CVS went with Erica over Liz yesterday, since Liz had gotten more PT thus far (again, small sample size).

But Liz is an aggressive, natural scorer. I think she is going to be very good, and glad she can spend a year backing up Arella.
